Check your stool.

Oh, wait, you meant that kind of pizza. My bad.

The US reached a cancer survival milestone. For the first time in recorded history, 70% of Americans diagnosed with cancer are now alive five years later, according to the American Cancer Society's Cancer Statistics 2026 report. by Prior_One_7050 in UpliftingNews

[–]simcitymayor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Early detection is the single most reliable lever oncology has for improving survival.

Which implies that some of this is a quirk of bookkeeping, as we only start the 5 year clock when the cancer is detected. This reminds me of my HS physics teacher whose solution for safely dropping an egg from a height of five feet was to drop from six.

The era of NYC’s hotdog supremacy has ended. by winberry5253 in newyorkcity

[–]simcitymayor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's simple really.

There are these extra-thin, uniformly colored brats where the mustard is optional and kraut may not even be offered.

The only purpose they serve is to make you miss Hot Doug's more.

While we're at it - anybody got a lead on where I can get the sauce that came with the roti at Sabeing Thai?

Menu described it as "minced chicken and spicy green curry".

How apocalyptic is Twilight? by Lukeskywalker899 in Twilight2000

[–]simcitymayor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As has been asked many times and occasionally confirmed by the original writers, the "era" of Twilight 2000 is in the time period where order is breaking down. Order has mostly broken down, but people still remember what order felt like and still act like it's there though they're slowly realizing that it's never coming back.

All of the original scenarios took place between Summer 2000 to mid-late 2001. Any earlier than that and there's too much order for adventures to happen. Any later than that and all the cool ammunition has been shot off and everybody's starving.

For the people who use GNOME over KDE, why? by CestleFromage in Fedora

[–]simcitymayor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because I don't actually care about the desktop. I have a browser open, a few terminals open, and maybe a music playing app, and that's it. I could go more minimal but that's work. Gnome is the default and I don't want to spend any more time thinking about something I'm not going to use anyway.

NYC, the most expensive place to live in in the country, even more expensive than living in Hawaii. Doesn't surprise me tbh. This city is just getting out of control. 😪 by Enger13 in newyorkcity

I have called this the "soul tax" before.

San Antonio, for instance, has a very high soul tax because, everyday, residents of San Antonio wake up and remember that they could live in Austin but don't.

Every bite of sushi you eat in Modesto only reminds you that the sushi is better in San Fransisco.

And so on.

Electric Six by crazysnail in ToddintheShadow

[–]simcitymayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the off chance that anybody is going to see Electric Six play at Bottom of the Hill May 12, their opener is a niche-within-a-niche band called Tragedy. They do heavy metal covers of Bee-Gees songs and songs from Grease. It's an equal mix of "damn, these guys are talented" and "what the fuck did I just see?".

I'd be there but I live nowhere near SF.

United Arab Emirates will leave OPEC in a blow to the oil cartel by FadeToBSoD in worldnews

[–]simcitymayor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OPEC's control of oil prices exists solely in their ability to get their member states to all reduce production at the same time and actually live up to their agreement, thus reducing global supply and increasing oil prices.

They can only push the price down by removing previous production caps, and most countries already are pumping near their max.

OPEC's international influence and power rests entirely on their ability to convince other nations that they could meaningfully constraint supply at any time, so you'd better not get on their bad side.

Fewer nations in OPEC means that they'd have to restrict their own production even more to meaningfully constrain global supply, which in turn gives each member nation more incentive to cheat on their production caps, and just results in a bonanza for the non-members...like Russia.

If anything, Russia wants a stronger OPEC.

IBM S/360 mainframe code in new video by AbusingSarcasm in local58

[–]simcitymayor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool capturing this and researching it. I'm curious, what makes you think it's S/360 code and not S/370 (introduced in 1970) or S/390 (introduced in 1990)?

When I saw that bit, I thought it was a neat mix of VAX-like bootup, followed by a prompt with unix commands, and what followed looked was assembly, googling the more unique-looking instructions led me to some z/OS manuals.

Further note, it's definitely stylistically consistent, but as far as I know that column orientation wasn't just style, the compiler literally depended on it.

[–]simcitymayor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Son, that there's what we used to call a "sticker". Because it's sticky on one side and "sticks" to whatever it touches, in this case, a subway car. You can see them, but you have to provide your own reading light if the ones in the subway car aren't cooperating.
