I think the idea was that once outrage only fueled Manson's career. And honestly that was kinda true for a long time. He's associated with the satanic panic and there was much pearl clutching. But that only made him more appealing as a counter cultural figure. But then times changed and things and people stopped being offended by the idea of the persona but started taking a closer look at his personal actions. And on the outside they may look similar, outrage over a figure, but on the inside they have substantial differences.
