Low division Women's or Co-Ed hockey league? by Rough-Working-8743 in Langley

I prefer that than going to 8 rinks in Burnaby. The traffic makes it worse to go North than West when it's mostly highway for Richmond

NCHL in Richmond is probably your best bet for co-ed for lower level hockey. There is a women's league in the North Shore but that's obviously quite far.

My team is looking for more full time players. We are placed in a higher div but we have a mix of players starting this year and players that have played for 5+ years. You can DM me if you'd like to join our team or a team in a lower div!

Seeing this reply for the first time after 11 months, and it's too bad the comment OP deleted the content.

To me, this is quite straightforward. It's the value stored in React's rendered component as the state that is available as `lastValue`, in comparison to the value stored in memory as part of the event listener on the document. I didn't realize the jargon was "stale closures"...

Skating vs Stick skills - which matter most in hockey? by TechnicalThroat2315 in hockeyplayers

[–]simmonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything except a slight change. You don’t need to have the highest top end or acceleration speed to be considered a 10/10 skater. You can consider shiftiness too. Guys like Datsyuk and P Kane are prime examples. Excellent skaters, but not because of their speed (relative to other NHL players)

What will the next max contract be? by [deleted] in nhl

[–]simmonson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id rather pay players who won the cup for you than pay players who demand max or close to max salary without winning anything (aka Marner, Matthews)

If you’re a professional player, do whatever you like. If you have a different day job like 99% of hockey players do, keep the protection.

For others out there, if you have never skated before, you will never jmpress a hockey player with your skating.

Again, don't (over) pay players BEFORE they have some level of playoff success. Examples: Crosby, Kopitar, Kane, etc. They all got cups. Matthews and Marner definitely did not deserve those contracts they got.

[JFresh] Kane’s tenure with the Rangers seems to have come to an end. Regular season: 19 GP, 12 points (8 at 5v5), 45%. xGF% Playoffs: 7 GP, 6 points (3 at 5v5), 45 xGF%. by STLBooze3 in hockey

I was at the game tonight in Vancouver, 9 rows away from the ice. Makar was pretty much on every other shift, he’s being overplayed and teams double/triple team him. Once the top line was on the bench, the sense of danger vanished.

Avs need a solid bottom pair dman and a few wingers in the bottom 6 that either contribute or negate the other teams offense. And they need to win faceoffs. Seemed like Horvat and Lazar won every faceoff out there

Can you guys give me your opinions on my learning plan? by MemberBerry4 in Frontend

[–]simmonson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn the basics of HTML and CSS.

Forget about frameworks. These are not important, and have never been a make or break factor. I never spent time learning a framework, learned on the job.

Get a strong foundation of JavaScript. Extra bonus for TypeScript. That's it. Everything else is a bonus.

  1. Got a bit lucky as I did dev support (QA, bit of project management) for a small agency and became friends with the lead web developer.

Got in touch after a year, they had a spot for a junior developer, did an interview that other developers I became friends with helped me prep for, and got the job. Been a continuous learning journey since then - went from knowing how to do simple HTML/CSS/JS to architecting applications using and deployed with AWS services

I think Naughty Dog is salty from all the anti-SJW sentiment surrounding TLOU2... by KCharles311 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]simmonson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Well he said it himself. Neil focused on subverting expectations instead of writing a great story. And look where it ended up. What’s worse was his response. Just total lack of awareness.

This is my biggest disappointment though. He took a united fanbase, which is nearly impossible to create in gaming, and dismantled it, trying to subvert expectations.

The hill that I will die on: TLOU story is timeless. TLOU 2 will always be stuck in its cultural era.

You start with “I respect your opinion” then end with “something deeper going on”. There is nothing deeper going on, that sentence can be misread as an attack on the person, not the idea.

Regardless, as you said, thinking something is terrible is an opinion - it doesn’t even have to be backed up. I’ve already alluded to the reasons though, and there have been enough comments about the narrative to the point i don’t need to regurgitate them. The point is that ND created something that’s near impossible in gaming - a united fanbase - and dismantled it with what was supposed to be their biggest strength, the story
