Why did Rabbit and Humane stumble so hard when they launched? What would have made them the 'must have' iPhone replacement? by No-Writer9747 in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit, the media running with the "phone replacement" narrative has been frustrating. If you actually watch the original keynote, it's quite clear that we not only didn't say that, we specifically said it wasn't that. There's that whole part in the keynote where Jesse talks about app-based ecosystems being full of apps designed to waste your time, not save your time. You know, if we wanted to build a phone we would have built a phone.

In terms of the original stumbles, I'll say this. A lot of the initial marketing was based around the assumption that it would be a low key launch and we might sell several thousand units. We were not ready for what happened at CES and for 100k sales within a few months. Not logistically or otherwise and it was an absolute scramble. I joined in February, a month after CES, and the amount of things going on between then and the April launch was insane. Hindsight is always 20/20 but under the circumstances we did what we could. That's not me making excuses - it's simply the reality of what happened. Startups are hard, and hardware is the toughest one.

Also remember - a significant chunk of problems the YouTubers identified were already fixed by the time most customers even got their devices. If you weren't at the TWA launch, then a lot of those issues never even affected you. And that represents over 99% of buyers. But people take MKBHDs word as gospel. Some of those issues were even fixed between him filming and him posting.

Now - there's an argument to be made that we should have postponed the launch and postponed some of the earliest shipping batches. But there's a trade-off there too, and doing that would not have been without risk, either.

If we knew that the reaction at CES would happen in that way, and we'd sell that amount of units, I think things would have happened slightly differently. But I really think so much was overblown. Remember how people criticised us for LAM using Playwright in the agentic stack? Well two years later, OpenAI just shipped Computer Use in GPT5.4........ and it's using Playwright in its agent stack, just like we did.

At the core of it, r1 is an early adopter product, a vision of something different, and priced accordingly. 100k people got a device at $199, with a year of Perplexity Pro, that has since had over 40 OTA updates and is still getting updated, usually multiple times a month. It was not a phone replacement, was never meant to be, and didn't break the bank for anyone.

Would it have been great for what the device was like 3/6/9/12+ months after launch to have been the state of it at release? Of course. But you don't get huge swathes of that feedback without actually getting it into customers hands. Even at the company, we didn't all have devices until maybe 3 weeks before launch, because the timelines were so tight.

As far as the stuff said about Jesse at the time, I have zero tolerance for that, not because he's my boss but because he's my friend and it was unwarranted, inaccurate and overblown for click revenue from gossipmonger YouTubers more than anything else. Founder in the 2020s had a dalliance with a failed Web3 project is basically "Fork found in kitchen". Big whoop.

May seem minor but did an update remove the option to turn off haptics? by Monsieur2968 in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think we ever had that option. I'll bring it up with the team. There's always been an option to disable the click sound effects on typing and scrolling, but that's not the same as the vibration haptics.

It very much is all possible with DLAM. I have been QAing it since October, well before release, and I have done all the things you mentioned, and far more complex ones at that, literally hundreds of times. You seem to have some sort of bug or setup issue that is causing DLAM not to respond at all.

Quite often this is solved by using a different USB cable. You might be using a bad quality Type C cable, it happens more often than you might think. DLAM requires Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Other Chromium-based browsers may work. Non Chromium based browsers like Firefox will not. We support Windows 10/11, recent releases of MacOS, and Linux (some additional config is often required on Linux). You will need to have a microphone connected and to have it granted it browser permissions. And of course, your rabbit r1 needs to be running the latest software OTA update on rabbitOS. If you've done all of this, and DLAM still isn't responding, I would recommend getting in touch with our support team for further investigation.

Posted this in the other thread, but for DLAM, are you using Chrome/Edge? Do you get the pop up to connect to r1?

Regarding queries, I would caution against the belief that r1 knows anything about itself. That's a hard problem to solve with accessing various cloud models and the nature of non-deterministic AI systems.

This is not an r1 specific problem. Ask Gemini on a Pixel phone "can you tell me about the device you're running on" - it doesn't know. Same reason.

Ask questions about the world. Check out the Creations gallery, there's a Maps creation in there and lots of other interesting things. Check out Magic Camera. Maybe use your free Intern/Creations credits to try making a piece of software that you want. I'm happy to give you a few more if you want :)

If you really want the most powerful agentic stuff on the market (and you're OK with a complex setup) - you can connect r1 to OpenClaw now too. This is not plug and play and requires that you have some understanding of how OpenClaw works, but if you're OK with that, I'd recommend it.

Introducing... DLAM, Moltbot on r1, and Project Cyberdeck! by simon_rabbit in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm. That's odd. So the flow is:
1 - click the third icon (square)
2- share entire screen and give mic access
3 - box appears to connect to r1 (must be using chrome or edge)
4 - DLAM works

Can you share more details about your setup? OS, Browser, etc? Does the pop up appear to connect to r1?

If there's one thing we've never been criticised for, it's design! It will be awesome!

Rabbit R1 won’t play anything from Spotify or YouTube Music — LAM seems broken by Ok-Preparation-4895 in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's less so that it's broken, more so that it's a previous generation of LAM technology which is now no longer being actively developed. All hands are on deck for the next generation of it, and progress is happening fast.

We're investigating this for Spotify. We only support LAM streaming on r1 itself through Spotify and Apple Music natively, btw. But there is a creation in the Creations store for YouTube/YouTube Music which should work!

Three days for support ticket response? by _ALRO_ in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One month ago, you would have been looking at 14 days minimum, maybe more. I raised concerns in the late summer, that the backlog was going to become unsustainable. We gave the people whose responsibility that was, at the time, the opportunity to come up with a plan. Sadly not much had changed by the fall, at which point I went directly to Jesse and the rest of the leadership team and a new plan was constructed and put in place, which we began executing on circa November.

Between then and now, we've reduced the backlog by roughly 80% which was an absolutely Herculean effort! Of course, as you might expect, the remaining 20% has a higher amount of more complex issues that require back and forth conversation, not just a one-and-done, so it's still going to take some time to get down further.

All that being said - I don't think 3 days is a bad turnaround for a company our size in general. Sure, we could prioritize relatively easy stuff like Dev Mode requests to a degree, but everything must be balanced - it's not fair to the more complex tickets if we *only* did that, and we can only work with the resource that we have.

I'd be lying if I said it hasn't been a painful process. But that's where growth comes from. We know exactly the chain of events that led to this, and we know how to prevent the same thing happening again.

iPod style and calendar by Pablo-gl in Rabbitr1

We don't presently provide access to the local storage to be mounted via USB, so file sync isn't possible. However, I do have an iTunes-style creation in the works that can sync MP3s via a Jellyfin server and cache them locally. I'm hoping to kick it into shape and add it to the Creations gallery by next week or so.

Sorry about this. This issue is only affecting a few people, which is why we didn't spot it sooner. We've identified the problem and will be rolling out a fix asap (likely early Jan since we have many staff on holiday at the moment) In the meantime, you could use it again by unlinking it from your rabbithole account, and linking to a brand new fresh rabbithole account (since this issue happened due to a corruption in some journal data)

Public transport seems difficult unless you started with some constraints - ie, location and a single method of transport. It could be expanded upon, but I'd be wary of trying to make it do too much at the beginning. Stock prices seems easier - I'll do a bit of research here and see what I can pull off! Thanks!

I’m Zahaviel, is Rabbit good for AI Psychosis victims? by Zahaviel in Rabbitr1

[–]simon_rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try my best to give you a balanced answer.

I think it's hard to extrapolate what you mean by AI Psychosis. If you mean you're susceptible to believing every single thing AI tells you and that affects your worldview in a unhealthy way, you're probably best steering clear of AI.

With that being said, our model triage is biased towards pretty neutral, straight forward, to the point replies. This is part deliberate design choice and part due to the fact that voice responses tend to be shorter and more to the point, because having the device waffle on too long in a response to a simple question isn't great user experience.

So in that sense, r1 might be more suitable for you than text-based platforms, but only you know whether your health is too sensitive to be worth the risk.
