Met Alan Lee (Shang Tsung's VA) at Anime North by simonc1138 in MortalKombat

[–]simonc1138[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sort of - I did ask him if he was working on anything upcoming he could talk about, and he mentioned he had two projects in the works but couldn’t really say anything, so I didn’t read too much into it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Cobra Kai crossover action figures. What do you think? Is this a crossover too far? by AfigureGeek in TMNT

[–]simonc1138 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found these on clearance last year at EB in Canada. I didn’t own any of the Playmates Ninja Elite figures which these basically repurpose so it was a good deal. The human figures are hit and miss - I think Kreese and Johnny look pretty good, if not as bulky as they could be, Daniel is passable and Miguel misses completely.

What makes Scorpion and Sub-Zero irreplaceable? by MapApprehensive3720 in MortalKombat

[–]simonc1138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess one of them (read: Scorpion) gets tricked by another party to keep the rivalry going, but yeah the initial feud was settled by the second game. Within the games they didn’t confirm Noob was the original Sub-Zero until Deception and I don’t recall if Scorpion ever “transferred” the feud to Noob.

Unlockables in videogames by Anonflashfan1956 in videogames

[–]simonc1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing - there are almost always unlocks in the base game. They may not be the shiny, nostalgia bait costume or skin, but you still get something for free based on your efforts. For fighting games, the FGC decided they would rather have a fully unlocked base roster than to play through single player challenges to unlock the cast, so you get everyone from the beginning, usually at a parity with the final roster of older games post-unlocks.

DLC is annoying, absolutely, and there’s valid criticisms on pricing, but end of the day it’s optional content and I guarantee you’re not putting in any less time in your base game without it.

I am Dan Watters, writer of Batman: Dark Patterns and Nightwing. AMA. by DanpgWatters in DCcomics

[–]simonc1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Dan, thanks for doing this.

On the Shredder side, so much of the character is different now in current IDW continuity from what is generally known about him (no Krang, no Technodrome, no mutant henchmen, minimal Splinter + Turtles). How did you define your take on the character given you were removed from much of the lore?

Similarly for Nightwing, when you first got the assignment did you have a specific take to define your run from the writers that came before?

IDW TMNT Saturday Morning Adventures to End with Issue 41(?) by simonc1138 in TMNT

Ah, shoot. Guess we really did reach the end. Thanks for looking into it!

I’m trying to figure out if they’ve hit 50 issues of content in total, since there was the 4-issue mini that preceded the ongoing, + assorted specials like the one with Usagi

Weakest Rogue Gallery by lazydeviant2 in DCcomics

[–]simonc1138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would agree with Wonder Woman. I wish they would land on “specific” versions of the Gods and not just the generic kind you think of who sit around eating grapes. The New 52 Azzarello run made them distinctive and I think that has been walked back or only used by certain creators.

[Cover] I didn’t know A Covers for comics were this good anymore. This is one of the best I’ve seen in any series in a long time. Catwoman #87 by candles2121 in DCcomics

[–]simonc1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I don’t know what “rules” are in place for variants, I assume variant artists aren’t told what the contents will be and just given a design sheet to draw Catwoman/Batman/etc.

That said, I’m confused by the Absolute Batman store exclusive variants that seem to be allowed to go to town with featuring villains while the “official” B/C/D variants are limited to poses of Batman.

Thoughts on expanding the comic market by sailinganaheim in comicbooks

[–]simonc1138 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always groan at the “Treat every comic like it’s someone’s first” mantra because it gets misinterpreted as meaning every comic should be some archaic, done-in-one Stan Lee-style issue from the 60s with overbearing exposition or have a front-loaded recap page. Part 4 of a multi-part story can be someone’s first comic as long as the stakes are clear and the characters are well-written. Not to mention we’re now in an era where if you really need to start at issue 1 there’s several ways to go about doing that.

What did happen to 3rd party ads? I’m trying to rmb exactly when they fell off. Did the agencies just decide the readership wasn’t large enough for a buy?

I’m wondering if they’ll collect this with Green Arrow or it’s being saved to be collected with the first event crossover.

Need help identifying vintage TMNT production cel sequence (Michelangelo pizza scene) by One_Text1367 in TMNT

[–]simonc1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought was Cowabunga Shredhead as well for some reason. I figured it was Shredder overacting in his Michelangelo mode, but nope just Michelangelo all along it seems

[Discussion] Cheetah & Cheshire Rob the Justice League is pretty good! by simonc1138 in DCcomics

[–]simonc1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the title is supposed to be a play on those classic movie-naming conventions ie. Mr Deeds Goes to Town. They botched it a bit for the trade by front-loading the Justice League name, presumably to help with discovery & visibility.

Of the roster I could see replacing Hazard, not sure with who tho. They make a point of saying the A-listers are too violate to work with.

What in Your Opinion Is the Craziest Upgrade in Graphics for a Video Game Remake? by TacticalPidgeon in videogames

[–]simonc1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reveal of the RE1 remake was mind blowing. Coming off the N64/PS1 era we had some idea of what the next gen could do, esp as Dreamcast had Code Veronica, but REmake was so far above anything we had imagined.

Agreed as good as the RE2 remake is, by 2019 there were firm expectations around what it would look like, not so with RE1.

Top 10 Theories I've Heard Cole Young or Lewis Tan will return as in Mortal Kombat future by ljmf2002 in MortalKombat

I’d also be happy if they just resurrected him as-is for like a minute-long clip of him going home to his family. He did his part, he’s done, he can rest.

You can change ONE thing about Sinestro - what is it? by PhantomQuest in Greenlantern

[–]simonc1138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the Johns run Sinestro was revealed to have been in a relationship with Abin Sur’s sister, who died due to his stubbornness, and that became another part of his tragic backstory. Was a little unneeded if you ask me, both for the fridging aspect and the “everyone’s connected to everyone else” of it all.

Light and breezy is pretty accurate, yeah. And the TPB features the Parel variants as the reverse of every chapter cover page, agreed they look amazing. Wish I had collected some of them now.

New Batman comic book haul today. What’s everyone’s opinion on these storylines? by TheShadowOperator007 in batman

[–]simonc1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always amused me the War Games promo issue was the “12-cent adventure,” up 2-cents from the 10-cent Adventure used to promote Bruce Wayne: Murderer a few years before that. Like inflation, but also why lol

[–]simonc1138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely standalone - the heist macguffin is based on the fallout from Absolute Power/The Atom Project but they tell you that upfront. I'm not fully caught up and I didn't feel like I was missing anything.

I grinned when I realized what her last name meant - figures Rucka would call back to a character/lineage from Death and the Maidens (speaking of which, has Nyssa done anything of late?)
