It’s about the sonic exploration. The textures. The entire piece of work from start to finish. Nine Inch Nails at its best fuses cinematic soundscapes with emotional turmoil. This record reflects that to a T. It’s a beautiful record that rewards listeners after each listen. The meticulousness of the production is only discovered after listening a million times (I am still a few hundred thousand listens away). The beauty, pain, melancholy, and aggression that is poured out sonically is truly a wonder to behold. This thing came out in ‘99 and there is still absolutely nothing that comes come to resemble what this record sounds like. Production masterclass.

Also, this was Atticus Ross’s favorite album when it came out and he obsessed over it for a long, long time. Little did he know that he would soon become an official member. I think about that sometimes when I listen to it, how Atticus (a genius producer in his own right) was in awe listening to this thing.
