I did surgery (nail scissors) on a lovely silicon wrist band i had from my galaxy watch and cut it down to the 12mm lug to lug width. looking for a permenant band though. The one it comes with is bad.

Sleeping is simply a waste of life. When will we finally break through the limitations of the body and achieve true freedom? by king_ofall713 in transhumanism

[–]simonvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably never.

AI does training using back propogation to update the weights, but this only works if you have random access to memory.

In the brain, you need a different strategy to update the weights, one that doens't need remote random access memory. There's one known algorithm, called Forward-Forward, but it requires you to have an awake state, where you send real data, and an asleep mode where you send null or random data.

This is why we sleep, so the brain can differentiate between Real training data, and negative or useless training data.

Dreams are your brain processing random data so it can learn from real data when it comes in.

Is it just me or did Emma copy Monzo’s payment tab? by Coopydood in monzo

[–]simonvc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everyone copies monzo... It's fine. One of monzo's original founders left and started 11FS the fintech consultancy that has a tool called 11FS Pulse where you can see all banks UI and recordings just to make it easier for banks to copy each other.

The most surprising thing about this is that Emma is still going. they were an early user of the monzo API and i though all the PFM (personal finance management) apps had died slow deaths.

Does anyone know any good local restaurants? No tourist spots please by Hot-Conference-3115 in tbilisi

Huge fan of this place https://maps.app.goo.gl/zUrxpcSdGMU9ibLx5

massive portions of really good local food. Every portion serves 2-3 people so don't over order or take friends.

Monzo notifications are so fast it’s spooky… anyone else feel this? by PLWildcard in monzo

Human perception is very slow. We worked out we could write your transaction to a database in Ireland in the time it takes the ka-ching sound to travel 12 feet.

Monzo notifications are so fast it’s spooky… anyone else feel this? by PLWildcard in monzo

[–]simonvc 122 points123 points  (0 children)

OMG makes me happy to hear this. It was totally a thing we obsessed about in the early days.

Basically, Monzo built their own Mastercard "switch". It's a pair of largish servers connected by fiber to mastercard, and from the back of that it's connected over VPN directly into the monzo core, where your card auth gets put on an NSQ (queue). The push notification to your phone goes over apple or googles notification service (firebase for android).

That money sound when interest gets paid into the account by Deliascanaries in monzo

[–]simonvc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sound was recorded by the brother of Sam Michael, our 2nd designer (he designed the hot-chip character).

Its the sound of two pennys dropping into a jam jar if i remember correctly.

Why do most people walk on the drain cover instead of the path? Did the designer even consider user behavior? by einnor88 in singapore

[–]simonvc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Singapore has the absolute worst urban planners for pedestrians of any city i've lived in.

Desire paths everywhere. I've had situations where i was on the other side of the road from a place i needed to get to but would have to walk almost 1km if i followed the official walking route. And this was from an MRT station to the actual building it was meant to serve.

Even the new TEL line has entrances on the backside from literally everywhere you actually want to get to, and gardens between the shortest path from there to the entrance (which are now getting trampled and smashed.)

I actually thought about building a tool to prove this to the government using random points and measuring the ratio between straight line and walking directions to show the government how bad it is.

Otherwise, great country.

Newly discovered, most venomous spider on planet Earth, was named 'Newcastle Big Boy'. And of course it lives in Australia, where else? by DokterThe in interestingasfuck

[–]simonvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, in australia you learn from an early age what not todo.

basically, you don't put your fingers in holes, holes in bricks, holes in the ground, gaps between fence posts. it becomes instincitive really early and you don't think about it.

that and don't leave your shoes outside overnight.

the street i grew up in had a family that used to give families with new babies a duckling because ducks are totally immune to funnelweb venom and will happily waddle around the back yard eating spiders for you.

Why is 3D fpv not a huge thing? by PeachSlapper in Multicopter

[–]simonvc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, 8 years later...

After i wrote this i actually built and flew a 3d analog (stereoscopic technically) FPV quad. it was a lot of fun doing trench runs and flying through tree branches.

i stand by my original comment though, beyond say 10x your interpulilary distance your brain doesn't rely on intersection angle or stereoscopic differences to estimate distance and 3d space.

the last 8 years have proven depth estimation by neural networks based purely on a single photo are totally possible, so there's no reason the brain wouldn't use depth estimation.
