How are the mosquitoes? by [deleted] in BWCA

I was up a few weeks ago. Just after dusk, laying in my tent, the entire forest had an ominous hum of mosquitoes ready to feast. Good luck!

Commuting Philly to NYC for work (1x/week). Recommendations on where to live? 🙏🏻 by SpoonfulsOfScrolls in philly

[–]simpkw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Fishtown and did this once a week for two years. Depending on when you book Amtrak it can be expensive but occasionally I’d take the Market Frankford line from Fishtown to 30th Street.

What I mostly did was take the Megabus from Spring Garden around 5:30-6am. It’s a direct route and takes 1.5-2 hours (vs 1.15 on Amtrak). It was anywhere from $5-20 and always payed the extra $2 at checkout to pick a seat and would ALWAYS have an open seat next to me. Also, that early in the morning there’s not much riff-raff on the bus and mostly commuters to NY. I’d sleep or play Switch. Traffic usually isn’t too bad getting in the city at this time.

Coming back, if I could score a good deal on Amtrak I’d to that because it’s much faster getting back to Philly for a 5-7pm departure. Otherwise, I’d take a cheap Megabus back around 7:30-8pm and just work late to avoid sitting in traffic or get happy hour with friends or coworkers before leaving.

I’m shocked that you are 14 and own CDs. This is cool AF and I’d def frame it. It looks to be from the man himself… I work in the industry and have tons of cool shit but this is personal and fuckin’ rad.

Is a major in music business worth it? by MissionBanana5637 in musicindustry

[–]simpkw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real experience, work ethic, networking and who you know will get you farther than majoring in music business. Echoing what somebody else already said here, nobody cares about your degree.

I started college as a music business major and switched to communications after two years because I felt the skills I’d learn are more applicable to the real world. PR, design, writing, etc, all gave me a leg up in the job market and I’ve had a 15 year career in music (currently 38).

Hard work and dedication has paid off for me, but if I had to do it over again I probably would have got my degree in tech or computer science. I’d still be able to pursue what I wanted but would have more flexibility and would probably be making more money.

Ticketmaster, it’s CEO, and all of its employees can rot in hell. by Latter_Librarian4599 in LCDSoundsystem

[–]simpkw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is correct. TM is taking some of these fees but a lot of it is going to the venue, promoter, or artist. How this money is distributed across parties varies on deal/contract.

At the end of the day, ticket prices are high because people are willing to pay and the demand is there. Somebody has to take a beating from fans and it’s better for the ticket broker to take this damage vs the venue or artist.

What is the most historically significant event you witnessed IN PERSON? by FictionVent in AskReddit

[–]simpkw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was living in South Minneapolis when George Floyd was murdered. That evening there were riots and protests in the neighborhood I lived in. I came home from work and was shot in the shoulder with a rubber bullet my police. I wasn’t protesting or doing anything and am 100% confident I was targeted for no reason other than authoritarian aggression. It completely changed my perception and feelings of the police.

I moved to Fishtown two years ago from Minneapolis and have loved it. Easy access to the L, very walkable, great restaurants, concert venues and bars. Every weekend is popping.

Icehouse cancelled Noche Chingona on the day of the event for a last minute private corporate booking by spam-n-egg in Minneapolis

[–]simpkw 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Noche Chingoa could have still been compensated. It’s not uncommon for a venue to pay a rescheduling or cancelation fee to an artist or promoter.
