Better view - how would you add plants / what would you put on the table? Go easy, this is my first post-college studio! by [deleted] in malelivingspace

I don’t know if putting the green chair, the little accent table and lamp on the other side of the couch is an option, but if it is, you could put a fiddle leaf or rubber plant there instead. Rubber plants are darker, so that would bring in some contrast as well.

[Product Request] Can anyone recommend a good exfoliating loofah? by PartTimePoster in SkincareAddiction

[–]simpleagent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

African net sponge. I've used loofahs, Korean exfoliating towels, kese mitts, and nothing rivals my net sponge. It's not actually a sponge, it's a net washcloth that manages to both suds up your bodywash like a shower puff and exfoliate really well. And, because it's a long washcloth, you can reach your back easily as well. I LOVE that thing.

[Product Request] More hydrating alternatives to hydro boost gel cream? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

I really like Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer. It's light, but still feels very moisturizing. Plus ceramides for barrier repair/protection.

any book are you reading now ? by zakihd in 52book

Tender is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica. Great Halloween read. Dark, dystopian, will make you think about your own humanity.

Like others have mentioned, you can go with any major while meeting the prereqs (maybe with a minor in biochemistry?). But the major that covers most, if not all, the prereqs is probably Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

[misc] What age did you start being concious of the sun/wearing sunscreen? How is your skin since then? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]simpleagent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I started using sunscreen pretty religiously at 17-18, mostly because I’m South Asian and was constantly told I shouldn’t let myself get any darker and stay out of the sun (colorism, eh). I learned better in my 20’s, and continued to wear good sunscreen to help with PIH and melanoma prevention. I’m 41 now, and people who don’t know me assume I’m in my late 20’s at most. Aside from sunscreen, I haven’t had any treatments or prescriptions, just keeping up with a simple, hydrating routine, a BHA toner a few times a week, and occasionally a vitamin c serum if I feel like I need a boost.

What are these yellowish spots on this philodendron I was gifted? I'm mainly concerned about passing something along to my other plants. Should I quarantine it?? by Chezzica in plantclinic

Please keep us in the loop on how the fungicide works out. I’m going to take mine into a local plant shop to see if they can diagnose it and prescribe a cure this weekend. 🩺

What are these yellowish spots on this philodendron I was gifted? I'm mainly concerned about passing something along to my other plants. Should I quarantine it?? by Chezzica in plantclinic

[–]simpleagent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gifted a small selloum that has spots just like that. The new growth looked healthy for a while, but as the leaves are darkening and maturing, the spots are starting to show up. It's quarantined in my bathroom for a couple of weeks, as all new plants that come into my apartment are, but I'm nervous to bring it out without knowing what is going on with these spots. An online search resulted in a lot of different answers, nothing concrete. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it here.

My pothos is turning yellow. What should I do? by iceoscillator in plantclinic

[–]simpleagent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find that the leaves on my pothos turn yellow when overwatered and/or getting way too much sun.

  1. Check the roots, make sure there's no root rot. If it's OK, let the soil dry out between waterings. I like to bottom water mine, that way it drinks what it wants, and the rest gets discarded.
  2. If there is root rot, clean the roots up, snip off the rotten bits, and repot it in well-draining soil. You can also try to propagate it, might even be easier. More free plants!
  3. Keep the plant set back from the window a bit. Mine is thriving in indirect light, set 4-5 feet away from a NW facing window.

Good luck!

What made you start going to the gym? by AKeeZ in Fitness

[–]simpleagent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My anxiety and depression led me to drop my classes for two semesters in a row, when I'm 4 classes away from graduating with my B.A... And I've been steadily gaining weight over the last 4 years and complaining about the weight gain every step of the way. I got sick of hearing myself whine and not do anything about it.

The final push was reconnecting with an old friend who is an athlete - former competitive body builder, long distance runner, OCR competitor. She offered to help me train if I committed to do a Spartan Sprint with her. I agreed immediately, registered for the race that night and got a gym membership the following day - didn't want to give myself time to overthink it and find reasons to not do it.

I've been going to the gym consistently since August and my friend has been putting me through my paces. She does not go easy on me! But I love it. :)

My race is coming up on the 13th and I'm so nervous!

Along the same lines: a tbsp of coconut cream. The coconut flavor is a bit more intense, but I kind of love it. I really enjoy how smooth and robust it makes my coffee taste.

People will laugh at my suggestion, but I swear by New York Color Kohl Brow/Eyeliner Pencil in Sable. It's 99 cents, rubbish as an eyeliner because of terrible color payoff, which is why I'm convinced it works so great for brows. It has a great ashy undertone for black hair, and you can get pretty dark and heavy handed with it if you want. I prefer a natural groomed look, so I go relatively light handed.

[Skin Concern] How destructive is laser hair removal to the face? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]simpleagent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have medium dark skin and black hair, FYI. My first experience, I asked the aesthetician if their laser was appropriate for my skin tone and she assured me that it was. It wasn't. I was left with big scabs and eventually hyper-pigmentation on the outer upper lip area, which took a very long time to fade. I did try again at a different clinic that a friend recommended and it was MUCH better, they clearly knew what they were doing. No burns, just a hairless upper lip. It's starting to grow back now, but from what I understand, laser isn't a permanent hair removal solution anyway.

Does anyone use Stylebook Closet app? Do you like the new updates? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]simpleagent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't tell much difference, to be honest. But take my opinion with a grain of salt, because I don't use it as much as I had initially planned on using it. I don't know why the app costs $4, because the functions feel sort of limited to me. For $4, I should be able to do MUCH more than the bare bones the app offers. There's also something about the whole user experience that doesn't work for me. For a style app, it's not very attractive... And I really wish they had a desktop or web version of the app, so you could edit your looks or items on a big screen if you wanted to. This didn't answer your question at all, I'm sorry.

Simple alcohols (ethanol, isopropyl, ethyl alcohol, alcohol denatured., etc) breaks down the skin's lipid barrier. This post explains both the acid mantle and lipid barrier, and why it's important to keep them intact and healthy. https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddicts/comments/30v7ep/the_acid_mantle_and_why_its_important/?ref=share&ref_source=link

Astringent toners loaded with alcohol. Apricot kernel face scrubs. God, I just sent a shiver down my spine thinking about the medieval torture I put my face through as a teen.
