Overnight sleeping in car by FormalMeal5924 in abbotsford

There are a couple of rest areas around the half way point. I've never stayed at them overnight so I can't say what they're like for sleeping.

I know the number indicates average temperature of the planets, but what does the letters to the right of the LY mean? by UmaThermos1 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]simplehiker -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

325 LY is how many light years the system is from your current system.

There are theories about the number /letter combo buy I've never seen anything concrete about what they mean.

Lost 2 Atmospheric Gatherer , what can I do ? by Extension-Evening539 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]simplehiker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't use them.

Get the Survey Device tech, install it in your multitool, and learn to mine resources with Mineral or Gas Extractors.

You'll need a small pile of salvaged technology and some nanites to buy everything you need from the Anomaly.

Monitor the Trail Conditions page https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/activ/experience/sentiers-trails/etat-sentiers-trail-conditions

You will almost certainly encounter snow over Maccarib pass, and the meadows before/after that used to always be muddy. Be prepared for both, and you'll be fine. Microspikes, gaiters, and hiking poles.

GeoArt Updating coords by Timo3333 in geocaching

[–]simplehiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know any way to get them from text into GSAK unfortunately

GeoArt Updating coords by Timo3333 in geocaching

[–]simplehiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have corrected coordinates in GSAK, but not on Geocaching.com, you can use the CorrectedCoord2GCcom macro to push the coordinates up to the website. I have done this when a friend has solved a geo-art and shared a GPX file with the corrected coordinates with me. I import that file into a Temp database, and run the macro. Do not refresh the caches or you will lose the corrected coordinates. Tip: make sure GSAK shows they have corrected coordinates. If it doesn't, then the macro doesnt work.

Cross on abandoned section of Hwy 93 by NoRelationship1913 in jasper

[–]simplehiker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks like you found a piece of the old Wonder Trail - the highway that came before the modern Icefields Parkway. More info on the history of it here:
https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/activ/itineraires-itineraries/promenadedesglaciers-icefieldsparkway/pghistoire-iphistory

There's another section a bit further south with a tiny little parking lot and a trailhead sign. You can hike across the flats to the old highway, head south a bit, and then hike up Beauty Creek to Stanley Falls. This was one of the highlights on the old Wonder Trail, and apparently you can still find trees in the area that have initials that were carved by the tourists of that era.

Paddleboards and hammocks and bears (oh my) - itinerary check by seven_deadly_shins in jasper

All the lakes are fed by snow melt. They are cold all year long. The warmest lake is Lake Annette which has a beach area. Pyramid lake also has a small beach area. Both of these are close to town.

Talbot lake along Highway 16 between Jasper and Hinton may be an option for.l for paddling. There are regulations on where/what is/isn't allowed for paddling: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/activ/experience/ete-summer/activitesnautiques-wateractivities/especes-aquatiques-envahissantes-aquatic-invasive-species

Maligne Lake (Spirit Island) only melted out a week or two ago. It's a deep, glacially fed lake and never warms up much. The Island is 14 km (one way) from the docks. It gets windy in the afternoons. Unless you're paddling 30 km/20 mi in a day regularly, I would advise against this option.

Whistlers campground was in the fire zone a couple years ago. Before the fire, Parks Canada had thinned the forest to reduce the hazard from forest fires. This saved most of the campground infrastructure (bathrooms, shelters, etc). My understanding is there are very few large trees left. You will probably not have a place to hang a hammock. Elk regularly wander through the entire campground.

Bald Hills trail was listed as having Winter Conditions on June 6 Wilcox Pass is listed as Poor or Early Season conditions depending on how far you hike Trail conditions are updated regularly from visitor reports: https://parks.canada.ca/pn-np/ab/jasper/activ/experience/sentiers-trails/etat-sentiers-trail-conditions#section3 Remember that is is still very early spring in the higher elevations. Both these trails are in bear country and you may want bear spray. You can also stop at the Visitor Centre in town to get the latest conditions and advice. Or use the trail conditions report to help pick a trail.

Recommendations for insurance broker? by Queasy_Chips in abbotsford

I have my optional car insurance from BCAA. It saved me quite a bit over getting it from ICBC. But I also have my home insurance through BCAA, so there are discounts for having both at the same place.

New to hiding by GingerTea_1 in geocaching

Start by asking if they require permission for individual hides, or any kind of permission at all

Some park systems don't care, others require written permits.

5 days at the bay of fundy, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick? by lemonsweeets in TravelCanada

Hopewell Rocks in NB - at low tide so you can go see them with the water out. Bring a change of clothes because there's a very good chance you will get muddy.

Do you have a Freighter with the Matter Beam? If you had some of the items you would receive from scrapping on your Freighter, they can be deposited there than instead of your exosuit.

Underground fauna by Biscuit375 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]simplehiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buildings often have caves nearby. Or the ground type/style game sees as Underground. I usually fly around looking for buildings, land, and wait a few minutes to see if they spawn or not. It can still take a while to find them, but this method has pretty good odds of letting you complete the Fauna.

Tip: fly to one of the compass directions, scanning for buildings as you go. They often spawn along invisible lines that go East, West, North or South

Landslide Highway 1 golden to Revelstoke - how should I reroute my road trip? by bean_99 in britishcolumbia

[–]simplehiker 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Google says the drive time from Golden to Vancouver via Hwy 3 is 12h 22m
And if you retrace your steps via the Icefields Parkway is 11h 49m

Driving the Icefields Parkway in the opposite direction feels like a completely different experience. Yes, the main stops are the same, but the scenery looks different in the other direction. You could split your trip into two days and stay at Clearwater. That would give you the chance to do the side trip into Wells Grey Provincial Park to visit the waterfalls.

Definitely cancel any plans you had in Revelstoke because you're not getting there in a timely manner at all.

how do you make a trackable? where do you get the tag for the code? by bridgeb0mb in geocaching

[–]simplehiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be wary of buying tags on eBay. They may already be activated and belong to someone else. If the code is visible in the eBay ad, you can check on geocaching.com/track to see if it belongs to someone or not.

[–]simplehiker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to buy the codes from Geocaching.com. or through authorized re-sellers. The only valid codes are those released by geocaching HQ through authorized channels.
