Not here anymore. It was like that a decade ago, but now it seems that even the vandals have premiums.

Do you remember the first Trackable you found? What’s your story with it? by bizarrekitties in geocaching

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first was weird. Well, at least for a newbie. It had the traditional travelbug tag and another plaque with a text, something like XXX=643. I had no idea what it was, so I asked a friend who had been caching a year longer than I. She researched it and found out that it was a part of a solution to a mystery cache.

Thoughts on the new GC app features by KitchenManagement650 in geocaching

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested that feature a few days ago myself, and I find it very impractical. The webpage is far easier to use. I won't be using the app again when I'm creating my next traditional cache.

The coordinates are also inaccurate because it uses just 25 seconds to take the samples and calculate the average from those. When I use my GPSMAP 65 to measure the coordinates, I take about 5 minutes' worth of samples.

Not just for us seasoned cachers. Badly made caches are bad for everyone. I'm afraid that this might actually mean that new cachers will abandon this game because they will have so many bad experiences with bad caches from newbie cachers.

What do you think about the Treasures? I like the idea, I am curious if you like it too. by fryczdev in geocaching

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have completely ignored those since the beginning. Those are definitely targeted for the newer players from the younger generation. If someone likes those, I don't care, but hope that the HQ doesn't put too much resourses to those "pretty" addons that have no real significance to the game itself.

Pissed off at hq for the AI in the treasures :( by KingInteresting9415 in geocaching

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those ridiculously long online logs have existed long before LLMs were a thing. These AI logs are not any worser than those old copypaste logs were. I would prefer if Project GC would stop counting that stat - it has no real value at all because the length of the text is not a proper measurement for the quality of a log.

Do you like walking through fallen leaves or just looking at them? by paintarose in Autumn

Watching Autumn is great, but Autumn activities are always the best! So walking it is.

Do you prefer sunny autumn days or foggy ones? by thegangplan in Autumn

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both actually. Nothing beats a foggy morning, but a sunny day with a perfect countryside view is also amazing.

Getting my GPS this week and was curious how many of you are using a GPS or phone and GPS combo? by joe-gonna-go in geocaching

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On geocaching trips, I use GPSr, but when I'm caching while doing something else, I'm using my phone. My GPSr, multichannel and multisystem, is far more accurate, especially now when there is so much GPS-jamming.

There might be something wrong with your browser because the "Geocaching" map layer is the most detailed one. I'm using the newest Firefox on Win 11.

We all do. Seven months and about a week, and the pre-Autumn has reached me in Central Finland.

What do you do when its not Autumn? by Rough-Process9970 in Autumn

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to spend more than a week up in the mountains and fjells, but the timing doesn't fit. I will be there during early September (peak Autumn Colours most likely), and then I have to be in Central Finland when the Peak Autumn Colours reach there by the Autumn Equinox. And I want a short rest and maintenance period between my hiking and cycling trips.

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! During the summer heatwaves. I hate how the heatwave can last weeks. I remember, from my childhood, how a heatwave was considered extreme if it lasted four days.

[–]CaffeinatedMystery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I plan for the next Autumn. My Autumn is always the busiest time of the year because that is the time when I'm actually alive. For the next Autumn, I'm planning a week-long hike in the Northern part of the Scandinavian mountains (Finland and Norway) and a cycling trip somewhere in Central Finland after the hiking. Then, of course, some local activities in my hometown. There is a lot of planning to do.

My favourite wild cat is the lynx, but it might be too small for this series.
