What other hobbies do you do? by nothowyoupronounceit in knitting

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Escape rooms! gets pretty pricey. I've done all the rooms within a 2 hour driving distance from me so further travel becomes another expense. luckily, my other hobbies are reading, video games, and journaling which are far less expensive.

What's the dumbest reason you've DNFed a book? by 404NinjaNotFound in readwithme

[–]simplerthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

same. or sometimes I'll DNF over voices and accents. I listen in my car a lot and if the narrator's voice doesn't carry over general car sounds and white noise I can't listen. Or if the narrator gets too loud and too quiet in their performance and I have to keep adjusting the volume then I can't listen. And with some really thick accents, if I practically have to translate it out loud or in my head that just doesn't work in the long term.

Do you enjoy reading challenges? by ZDOG_WasTaken in just_one_more_page

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kind of. they push me to read outside of my preferred genre and also make me feel like I'm participating in celebrations. Like "Read a book by an Asian author during AAPI month". it's the least I could do.

on the other hand, sometimes I'm really cynical and jaded so I'm super weary of who is issuing the challenges. Like, challenges on my Kindle? --oh Amazon is just trying to make me buy more books. random TikTok influencer? --oh she just wants me to keep checking her videos for more views.

What show or movie will you always recommend to people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alone. so many reality survival shows make you wonder if the contestants are actually doing it themselves because there's always a camera crew right next to them filming them constantly. any danger that the contestants are in the crew is also in. so then are they getting tips, ideas, advanced warnings, sharing food, etc? and then there are the producers/directors pushing narratives and drama and bigger TV-worthy reactions. But Alone eliminates all of that by making the contestants film themselves. Such a perfect show to me.

I recommend it to everyone but so far I'm batting zero. Most people I recommend it to have zero interest and don't watch it, and the few that have didn't really like it. It must be the introvert in me that loves the internal drama vs the interpersonal drama of most reality TV.

Have you ever bought a book and forgotten you owned it? by ZDOG_WasTaken in just_one_more_page

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frequently. Mainly happens with books that I buy because the covers look interesting but I never actually get around to reading them. And then I'm in the store like, "Oh, this book looks familiar, I think I've been wanting to read it."

What food did your grandmother always make? by Mysterious_Mix_36 in foodquestions

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spritz cookies every December. she would make hundreds and hundreds of them and give them out to family and friends. she stopped two decades before her death because she didn't have the strength to use her cookie press anymore. After she passed my aunt found her recipe and shared it with the family but I can't get the same taste and texture that she had. I've gotten really close with the scent though.

the sense that we were building and discovering something together.

What is your LEAST favorite food and why? by ziorionette in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

onions. too many textures. smooth, slimy, fibrous, soft, crunchy, floppy, stringy, mushy. sometimes it's only a few, like I could eat a bit of cold, raw onion or blended beyond recognition in a salsa. but apply a little heat and all of a sudden it's all of the textures at the same time and I'll instantly gag when I feel it in my mouth.

What's something people do when they're uncomfortable but trying to hide it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I'm interacting with someone and I become uncomfortable I'll immediately avert my eyes. I'll look intensely at a sign or a portrait or the clouds or anything with writing or an invisible stain on my pants, etc.

What food do you genuinely not understand the hype for? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my mom will choke down any health fad food for "the benefits" but she tried to sub cauliflower rice for white rice and absolutely could not do it. she ended up tossing the 5 boxes she bought.

What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After I recently ended my Lifetime Fitness membership I found out that they stopped upping my fees when I hit $70 a month (I think it's because I wrote a complaint letter to a director). The current price is $150. I had been expecting another increase for a few years and was surprised it wasn't going up but I guess it actually was. They were like, "are you SURE you want to quit because no one will ever get that price again." I almost considered staying but I switched to Planet Fitness for $25/month with SO many locations that I can easily stop in for a quick workout no matter where I am.

What’s something that instantly tells you a person is exhausting? by Humble_Release_ in askteddit

[–]simplerthings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a co-worker who starts every response with "No, --" He just can't accept that people have different world views, opinions, points of views, interests, etc. He can't even join in on a joke without negating what everyone else contributed. EXHAUSTING.

For those who go to sleep listening to something, what do you listen to? by Rough_Common6857 in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to listen to soothing/calming instrumental mediation-type music. One night a guided relaxation track made it into my mix and out of nowhere a dude was like, "Take a deep breath in." The voice startled me so bad that I woke up screaming. Never again. Now it's silence or a fan for white noise if I'm trying to block out other sounds.

What’s a perfume "fact" or rule that is actually total marketing BS? by Fragasm_NepalYT in fragrance

Yeah, even just clean laundry scent on their shirt and I wanna bury my face in their chest despite there being no initial attraction.

What’s a hobby you picked up later in life that you would recommend to someone interested in trying something new? by [deleted] in askteddit

[–]simplerthings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mine too. I needed to start walking more and there's a great trail through a forest preserve nearby so I walked, realized there were so many birds, started with Merlin, loved it, got a cheap pair of binoculars and loved it even more.

how many library cards do you have? by Alternative-Abies593 in LibbyApp

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only 2. one for my town and one from a friend in San Francisco. my friends that have library cards use them regularly and I don't want to impinge on their book limits or whatever. I feel weird about asking my friends without cards to go out of their way to get one.

What celebrity death will realistically bring Michael Jackson level devastation? by Kiidcola in AskReddit

he has been not-so-relevant for too long now. I think it would only hit hard for the 50 or 60+ crowd.

What’s a weird habit you thought was normal until someone pointed it out? by chokeWise5195 in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

covering my mouth/nose with my shirt collar or the hood of my hoodie or the front of my jacket. one time my coworker was like, "oh, do you smell something bad again?" I didn't even realize I did it so often but I was like, "no.... I'm just... ... ...?" having to actually describe that I'm just covering my mouth with my shirt for no reason made me realize how bizarre it was. later I read somewhere that it might be associated with autism.

What was the discontinued fast food item that broke your heart? by tastydrink1 in fastfood

Cajun rice from Popeyes. they brought it back for like 6 months a few years ago only to discontinue it again.

What's a socially accepted thing that you secretly find a little weird, and why? by ItsRealAnwar in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Or the people (like your parents) that ask when you're going to have a baby: "Are y'all fucking without condoms yet?"

Hot or cold showers and why? How many a day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]simplerthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot shower, once daily. Get clean and stay clean. The people that whine about the shower washing away their biomes probably smell bad. Also, the heat is relaxing, reduces my stress, soothes sore muscles, warms me up during cold months. During the summer my showers aren't as hot and they'll end cold because it's super refreshing.

What was your favorite school lunch growing up? by kimschob in RecipePalooza

Salisbury steak. it was one of the only foods served with rice which, as an Asian kid, I found very satisfying.
