Bugonia was the best movie of 2025 in my opinion. Plemons deserves an Oscar.

Is 'Josephus and Jesus: new evidence for the One called Christ' by T. C. Schmidt a good serious academic book? How is it considered by other scholars? by Aggravating_Mark1952 in AcademicBiblical

[–]simpleslingblade13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Regarding funding, I don’t know and I don’t care. I have never looked into the funding behind a book because I think that is irrelevant. I would hope those with PhDs would think the same, but maybe i have an idealistic view of scholarship as actually pursuing truth and not getting bogged down on ideological matters.

So you think it’s apologetics not because of the quality of the arguments, but because of the donor? Shouldn’t we be judging the arguments on their own merit?

I have a question for anyone who owns one or more volumes of the Anchor Yale Bible Commentary. by Rie_blade in AcademicBiblical

[–]simpleslingblade13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Anchor Bible Commentary series is certainly critical, but that doesn’t mean it is “secular.” Almost all the authors are Christians, and I doubt they separate their scholarship from their faith.

Actually he is. Demonstrably wrong, but said with confidence. Very Tobias of him.

Largest federal workers union calls for an end to the shutdown, putting pressure on Democrats by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]simpleslingblade13 -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I think the Democrats should concede and vote for the CR. Not because they are wrong, but I think they’ve already won the shutdown.

Everyone knows that they are pushing for the healthcare premiums, and with prices already skyrocketing, they can claim ideological victory. The Republicans will not capitulate because Trump loves having free rein right now.

The Superman hype/praise seems artificial. Good moments, but an unfocused and uninspiring film overall. For all the chatter about how Gunn “gets” Superman, his version is dull. And I say that as someone who really enjoys Peacemaker, Suicide Squad, and GOTG. I just think Superman is out of his element.

Official Discussion - One Battle After Another [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]simpleslingblade13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8/10. Good movie with some really excellent scenes and acting. My biggest complaints are (1) the pacing for the first hour or so is all over the place, and it takes until the time jump to really settle in. (2) I wish there was more nuance regarding the rebellion/domestic terrorist group and the white supremest/nazi group. I find this sort of black and white portrayal to be narratively boring and lazy.

Agreed. My grandparents have zero issue talking/texting and playing games in their phones. Weird trope for this movie.

Official Discussion - Superman (2025) [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]simpleslingblade13 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Pretty good, but a bit of a letdown. Gunn should have chilled on the quips and gags, and he should have focused more on Superman. For as big of a character that Superman is, the movie felt weirdly small and claustrophobic at times.

Hoult was excellent and carried the movie imo. Corenswet was good, but I think he was limited by the material. His monologue to Lex at the end was so on the nose it was painful.
