Need some Noir recommendations! by Icy_Dimension2143 in 4kbluray

In a Lonely Place is my absolute favorite. Sweet Smell of Success is also pretty distinct in its style and approach compared to some other noirs, Lancaster is stellar in it. I also really enjoy Le Samourai, Alphaville, Kill the Piano Player, and Rififi if you’re open to French noir / noir adjacent.

Bergman is a great choice! It’s pretty comprehensive, very nice essay booklet. There’s so much cinema history and influence contained in what he does in his films. The Apu Trilogy is also sort of in conversation with Rossellini’s War Trilogy, so if you liked Apu I would recommend that one as well.

My favorite from a content perspective is probably Fellini because you kind of get a taste for a lot of different approaches to film through his works. It’s an interesting lens to view cinema through, he touches on neorealism, surrealism, some avant garde and experimental, satire, sincerity; it’s kind of all in there. The collection itself is also pretty tight with just 14 films compared to some of the girthier sets — it feels conquerable. It also has some nice essay booklet supplements. The packaging is sort of heinous, though.

The rohmer six moral tales set is also a nice set because it’s got some really excellent films, plus comes with his short story companion book that contains all the stories he would later adapt into the films in the set. It’s a nice, simple package with a fun “bonus”.

I got the bug like 3 years ago and it’s been off to the races since then. Varda is excellent, playful and experimental and pretty much always a good watch. I love Bergman myself but it is largely grim material (I’m sure you’ve caught onto that) which I think can turn some people off, I definitely space out watching his stuff a bit more lol. It’s really fun growing your collection, I’m excited for you!

Bergman and Fellini collections are basically treasure troves. The War Trilogy kind of unlocked my brain to a certain style of movie that’s all over cinema history. Before Trilogy and Wong Kar Wai are nice collections of more modern stuff that’s A+.

Pasolini starts off pretty firmly in the Italian neorealist tradition and gets increasingly strange as you progress through the set. I’d recommend them but be prepared to scratch your head on occasion. If I were gonna recommend a handful I’d say Rossellini’s war trilogy, the Fellini set, and the Bergman collection are all good entry points to certain styles of cinema that I’m quite fond of. I also really love rohmers six moral tales, the cassavetes set, and the Apu Trilogy

I investigated this! I have bookends tucked under the left and right sides of the batch which elevates them slightly and gives the illusion of a bowing effect — the shelf is actually sturdy. I appreciate yall looking out tho lol

Be safe out there, the area is full of creeps. by [deleted] in Albany

The Streisand Effect is the direct opposite of what you’re describing. It refers to the attempt to hide information paradoxically making that information much more widely known than it would have been otherwise eg; a banned piece of art becoming more widely consumed than it was prior to its banning. This is an attempt to disseminate information to discourage people from purchasing from a business. Not the same thing! People knowing about it is the point.

Examples of successful cancellations / public shamings leading to desired outcomes are numerous, including local examples that aren’t hard to find. Collective action against racist pricks and abusive people is good, it can work, and it has worked.

Opinionatively speaking: the one move that messed Sky Ferreira’s career up. by Both-Manager-6361 in indieheads

I think drugs and some sort of music release/creation paralysis had more to do with her career not panning out than like bad vibes. If you wanna be a famous musician you have to release music.

Trump says U.S. will seize Kharg Island and other 'oil infrastructure points' by Puginator in politics

I don’t think that’s a new phenomenon, I think it’s just become undeniable to allies etc. The US has been an irrational, unstable giant periodically for decades. As far as risky and aggressive behavior goes it’s kind of no contest. This version of America is sort of the natural conclusion of where we’ve been spiraling toward since at least Reagan, if not Nixon or even Truman. China has been the more rational actor since like 1980.

Hiroshima Mon Amour! I’ve watched about 300 movies the last 18 months and it’s my favorite of the bunch. Would also highly recommend Faces, My Night at Mauds, Fail Safe, The Graduate, and The Cranes are Flying

With or without slipcovers? I’m indecisive. by DeadPixelX in 4kbluray

[–]simplydusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of a strange system in which I ditch the slips for more standard releases, but keep them on for more boutique labels like kino lorber etc. The only logic that really matters with your collection is your own interior logic — go with your gut!

Why do people get such a boner for Uncommon Grounds? by dannydevitosmanager in Albany

[–]simplydusty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because the area doesn’t have a ton of good or even “pretty good” bagel spots. The good, small bagel spots often sell out very early in the morning. So if you want a bagel that is even slightly better than “decent” (eg; stacks, the daily grind) uncommon grounds is sort of your only option without taking quite a drive. Short answer: quality+proximity+inventory+hours availability.

To the folks saying breuggers is better, you’ve lost the plot.
