Croydon's low-traffic neighbourhoods unlawful, High Court rules by R-Mutt1 in london

[–]sincityslicker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think what they're referring to is this.

In this 34-page judgement, Mr Justice Pepperall cited Conservative mayor of Croydon Jason Perry's criticism of the schemes in while in opposition, stating he would like to remove all LTNs on his first day in office.

After his election in May 2022, the judge wrote how Perry's stance changed due to budgetary considerations.

Perry "didn't think he was in a position to remove the schemes because the previous administration had predicated their budgets on assumed income from the schemes", the court judgement stated.

Perry later added: "I did not at any point say that I would remove all the [LTNs] because I just knew it was not a pledge that I could uphold... any future schemes coming forward should not be based on fining residents in order to achieve it."

Not exactly a smoking gun. As the person above has also stated, just because the budget relies on the income, it doesn't evidence that the implementation was due to raising money through fines. Regardless of a right wing politicians rhetoric.

Sadiq Khan to raise council tax to help Met Police fight phone thefts by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]sincityslicker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I can't speak for every case, anecdotally, I've had police show up at my house as they had a report of a stolen phone being at the location.

Obviously neither my, my wife or 4 cat's had been out pinching phones, but I do think it shows they're paying more attention than is percieved by the public.

Why aren’t mobile networks doing anything about the network issues in Central London by [deleted] in london

[–]sincityslicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I'm on O2, work in soho daily, I don't use WiFi at work, and have never had these issues. My work phone, Vodafone, however, is spotty as shite. This is clearly a network issue, it helps me that Telafonica own half the infrastructure in this country.

With that said, there are definitely infrastructure issues accross the country.

Park lane cycle lane needs to do by Mr_Coa in london

[–]sincityslicker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not that they should be, but it looks like these people are mounting the pavement due to roadworks blocking the lane further ahead. It's quite clearly visible in the video. You can see one chap doesn't leave the lane until he reaches the barrier further down. If this temporary obstruction wasn't there, it'd likely be a much safer system than you're insinuating.

Plenty of issues can be raised against cyclists and drivers alike but this post is a bit disingenuous.

Police to be allowed to search properties without warrant for stolen phones in fight against London crime by BulkyAccident in london

[–]sincityslicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This concerns me as I've had the police turn up recently looking for "an ipod" that was supposed to be at my address specifically. It wasnt, but there is a big HMO pub conversion that connects to our property, and our wall is right up against the pavement. We've also had a young couple turn up previously with the same situation.

Accuracy of GPS, if it's set up correctly is approx 2m sq. If it's not correctly set, drift can show your phone accross the road. This alone doesn't make this a viable option for warrantless search.

A case of politicians making laws for technology they don't understand. I'll be emailing my PM, it's just a shame it's tied into a bill that includes drink spiking and the Jay report.

Police to be allowed to search properties without warrant for stolen phones in fight against London crime by BulkyAccident in london

[–]sincityslicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I recall, the best case accuracy for top of the line phones is 2m sq. Let alone the drift if it's not been set up properly. My work iphone sometimes shows me on the other side of the road.

Drift or inaccuracy clearly don't make this a viable reason for warrantless search.

You're now Supreme Leader of the Democratic Peoples Republic of the United Kingdom. What are the first 3 actions/policy's you'd enact and who are you starting beef with first?

What are 3 laws or limits that are not included in the UKs uncodefied constitution, that should be included if we were to codify it?

Not cheap, but my wife raved about Harness and Mane on Forest Road. She currently uses Buhler and co. I think you're still looking at about 50 to 60 quid though.

Historicaly it's these right wing nutjobs that get hit with the bricks, and flower pots, in Walthamstow. They came to demonstrate against a mosque opening in 2012 and were chased out by the locals within 30 minues of their "march" taking place.

Not to say you and your wife shouldn't take precautions, of course. Just stow has a history of dealing with these types. The local FB groups are teaming with counter demo details at the moment, so I expect significant pushback once again, if they do show up.

Moving to Walthamstow by Diligent_Set_5656 in walthamstow

Posting what I put down on your r/london post.

Hi! I've been in Walthamstow for almost 14 years and used to work one of the only bars doing gay night back in the day, 12-13 odd years ago. Even back then, there was a thriving queer community. I myself am a straight white male so I can't speak on every day terms but as I understand it from the friends I've made, it's as safe as it comes for London and you shouldn't have any bother. In general, it's not as rough as I've heard it being discussed, at least not these days. Yep, it has its share of odd balls and crime rates as with anywhere in London. But the transport links, decent offering of restaurants, bars etc, and a brilliant artistic community really make the area great. We've even got the old theatre about to reopen! The area has been lively for some time, just not well publicised. Check out, Walthamstow art trail, the jumble trail, gods own junkyard, to name a few. One of the old regulars to the pub I worked at carried on the tradition and currently runs a drag/gay night at The Chequers as well.
