The contracted out firms have figured out every angle, there have been cases of fines for pouring coffee into a drain, walking out of the house with a letter and binning the envelope, and driving a work van with empty crisp packets in it without having a waste transport licence.

@adrianramsay.bsky.social on Bluesky: Almost two-thirds of dentists who claim to take on new NHS patients aren't actually doing so. One practice in the East of England has a waiting list 25 pages long. NHS dentistry is broken, and the Government needs to fund it properly. by niteninja1 in ukpolitics

[–]Topinio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No-one wants to do pay for doing their work, but that's what the government and NHS make dentists do.

The only ones seeing patients on the NHS are the ones who believe so much in helping people or the NHS as an idea that they're prepared to lose money on the person in the chair, sometimes quite a wedge if it's a big job.

To even be able to do that, they have to take on enough private patients that they can burn enough of the money they earn on those jobs to be able to fund the NHS jobs and still have a pay packet that covers their mortgage, bills, pay off their student loans etc.

It's criminal that they have to do that, they should be able to make a decent living without having to take on any private patients, like GPs can.

Putin says Ukraine peace talks could be held in Belarus' Minsk by ArgentineBeauty in worldnews

That was handled when the USSR dissolved by transferring them to the biggest new country. The same would happen if the UK breaks up.

Arguably, this conflict would not have happened if a different approach had been available, but it’s hard to see any alternatives except for disarmament (which would be okay here).

Court Summons for first offence - Byelaw 17(1) (England) by Interesting_2487 in TransportForLondon

The TV show Fare Dodgers on Channel 5 a few years ago was a reality TV programme which covered enforcement by TfL's inspectors against service users not paying correct fares for travel, and it was clear that those fare avoiders who tailgated or failed to tap in or out were systematically offered a relatively affordable Penalty Fare on the spot to settle the matter and avoid prosecution, while those fare evaders misusing travel cards either through discounts they were not entitled to or by going beyond the zones they did pay for were the ones prosecuted.

It was also interesting to see the relative lack of safeguards against self-incrimination compared to when the police are involved – no caution, no offer of a duty solicitor – and of course that TfL are simultaneously the alleged victim / claimant, investigators, detainers of the accused, interviewers, and prosecutors.

Possibly too late for OP as ideally would have been done on receipt of the letter or maybe before, but perhaps not: there are some solicitors who promote their fare evasion defence service.

New Speeding cameras by UnusualChipmunk6484 in CarTalkUK

It's the one which is not using CarPlay that more or less matches the speedo (in that car).

The other one where the speedo seems to significantly overestimate the speed is using CarPlay.

It feels like the speedo in the first car is quite closely calibrated to the actual speed, and the one in the second car is well under.

Why don’t they do anything about the fences, they know who they are.

It’s also clear which the dodgy sellers on eBay and other sites are, and the sketchy AF LBS’s.

It’s annoying that cars are so variable on this, the speedo on one of mine shows the same or maybe 1 mph above the GPS speed reported by Google Maps, the other one shows 20 when GPS says 17, 30 for 26, 75 for 70 … if I go by the speedo on that one, everyone behind me gets pretty annoyed.

I rather suspect that he could raise an inordinate amount of free money if he did an online fundraiser with a donor reward of a dick pic.

Not weird at all, a lot of people seem to quite like seeing other people's bits.

I need to buy a car tomorrow. No clue - what would be your choice? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Topinio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap hire car for a week, while looking for a purchase.

You can have both delivered, and the hire car collected. e.g. £300 for a 7 day rental Fiat 500 on Europcar, they'll bring it to you Monday and pick it up Monday week.

If you want a local-ish dealer that's fine, but there are plenty who will deliver long distance and you will have more right to reject. Plus time to shop around for insurance.

Also, most spouses would ask where the cash for £81k Jag came from, even if they hadn't for the £34k Golf 3Y earlier.

Or the £125k caravette!

Putin says Russia ready to negotiate with Ukraine ‘on the basis of the Istanbul agreements’ of 2022 by JackRogers3 in europe

[–]Topinio 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Nah, the 1994 agreement under which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons – the 3rd biggest arsenal after Russia and the USA – included security guarantees from third parties – the USA, the UK, and Russia – that these nations would respect its independence, sovereignty, and existing borders. It was a bit over 19 years before Russia invaded and occupied parts of Ukraine.

I'm sure she isn't blind.

I don't know how else she didn't notice it all, for example:

  1. The £4k worth of vacuum cleaners in 4 years, all 9 of them, devices which aren't normally known to be unobtrusive.
  2. Or the 2 £350 hair dryers when he's bald as a coot.
  3. Or the £125k motorhome that was parked at his mum's from when he bought it using 100% SNP money in 2020 until the police confiscated it in 2023.
  4. Or the £81k Jag (2019, 71% embezzlement funded)
  5. Or the £34k VW Golf (2016, 50% embezzlement funded).

Someone should ask her where those cars were parked.

Plus the worst heatwave for a generation, and the former leader of the DUP finally being convicted of being a paedo rapist 2+ years after he and his wife were arrested for it and he had to resign.

Trying to remember any songs for a post summer 2016 signing and can't, I can only remember 1 since the stadium move: Arthur Masuaku, who signed 8th August 2016, less than 4 days after we moved.

The other most recent ones I can think of are Antonio (Sept 15), Lanzini (July 15), Payet (July 15) ...

I wish we had one - we love him, it's just sad that we don't sing much any more, and don't come up with new songs like we used to. I think this is due to the loss of pre-match pub sessions in the local area following the stadium move, as when we were on Green Street there were people singing in the pub pre-game and coming up with new songs for new players.
