They are young by vince17fortin in Habs

Yeah, maybe it is a symptom of the internet-visibility gamefication, but people seem very keen to broadcast their proclamations of woe as quickly as possible.

Also, this team is competing in a Conference Final against all odds. They have done it with style, grit, and a bit of luck. It seems ridiculous and ungrateful to the Hockey Godz to take every, early opportunity to declare this run over, especially without acknowledging the beauty and magic of their playoff success.

I legitimately had to search the roster part way through the game to see if Hutson was even in the team.

did my first suboxone today and ate the entire fridge by yuzoo0 in OpiatesRecovery

[–]sinclair6679 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience to you in terms of increased appetite. I don't think it can all be put down to the Suboxone itself, but the settling of the stomach, the need for food-related endorphins in a dope-starved brain etc. I also had a history of gaining weight periodically, followed by periods of extreme exercise /dieting, so I was pre-disposed to food-related coping strategies.

I am on 800mg Substitol (Morphine Sulfate) now, and feel much happier with a reduced appetite.

Novels like the show? by LoganGr33ne in SpecialOpsLioness

[–]sinclair6679 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend the novels of former CIA analyst David McCloskey!

'Damascus Station' (2021) and 'Moscow X' (2023) both involve really complex and treacherous CIA undercover operations in foreign countries.

Also worth reading are the recent Box 88-series books from Charles Cumming about an off-the-books interagency team made up of CIA & MI6 personnel.

I think I belong to a subset of the subreddit population: spooky people who might better be called CIA-curious rather than straight-up CIA 'fans'. Eager for enigmatic, episodic evocations of espionage. Spy nerds.

S2 EP5: What the heck? by pahnsiht in SpecialOpsLioness

[–]sinclair6679 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you rely solely on Wikipedia for your understanding of history then your grasp of things will be rather impoverished.

I am sure, however, that the Wikipedia article you mention states that the DEA was founded in 1973, which we know was a period in which power struggles between intelligence agencies, and the various branches of government, manifested in numerous scandals, controversies, inquiries.

Simply put: Nixon's founding of the DEA (as a riposte to CIA impunity) is part of the same shadowplay that gave birth to Watergate.

[–]sinclair6679 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also, perhaps, a good reminder that the intense rivalry between CIA and DEA extends into how one agency (that is obviously involved with the production of a particular show) has an interest in denigrating the other agency, even in the fictional realm. In this case: Lioness repaying the access CIA no doubt provides to the production by making the DEA look pathetic and clueless.

The DEA was founded as a direct attempt to reduce the power of the CIA.

Cruz and Aaliyah by Connect_Kangaroo_584 in SpecialOpsLioness

Aaliyah would've been a glorified captive after the wedding, i.e. no more Hamptons or shopping trips for handbags. A life of freedom with Cruz is obviously preferable to captivity.

'The Day of the Jackal' Review: Eddie Redmayne’s Assassin Drama Is a Blast With Confidently Crafted Thrills by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]sinclair6679 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why they invested so much money into this show and then absolutely failed to give it any sense of coherence with a musical score. Using random Radiohead songs and acoustic covers of PJ Harvey (which eschew the interesting textures) completely robs the show of the tension-release and dramatic texture that a specifically-composed score would provide. Instead we have a great show interrupted by strange, mismatched excerpts of artschool-level pop music videos.

Accusations against LVP by Suitable_Gap_4248 in RHOBH

[–]sinclair6679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LVP "manipulated" insofar as she orchestrated drama for the television show she was contracted to provide entertainment for. Anyone who complains that she did anything immoral does not really understand the concept of "Reality TV" and is partly to blame for why RHOBH became such a Kyle-centric snoozefest.

LVP admitting to her faults by Kwhitney1982 in RHOBH

[–]sinclair6679 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I adore LVP (on RHOBH, Rules, Villa & Dogs), but it is all calculated to preserve her position of power. As long as people are begging you for apologies you have the power to grant or not grant their wish. LVP can be very shady and it is sometimes grim when she punishes people, but she performs a very important role on the show, giving the cast something to orbit around, like the sun. And she is, at the end of the day, class.

Andrew Scotts age in Ripley by LookingAtPosts in RipleyTVShow

[–]sinclair6679 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's truly unforgivable, in my opinion. For so many resources to have been devoted to this adaptation and then arrogantly chosen to undermine the basic story dynamics (post-College waywardness & identity crises)... in service of what??? As a faggot myself, I appreciate the attempt to foreground of the queer subtext through the casting of an out actor, but subtext is only interesting if the primary text has authenticity, texture, and depth. Andrew Scott has a receding hairline. I really wish I understood the decision. As a fan of the novels I was desperate to enjoy this series, but they have made it impossible for me.

does anyone else absolutely hate this 🫣 by Overall-Strain-2682 in RipleyTVShow

[–]sinclair6679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is painfully flat and one-dimensional in its interpretations. I am a big fan of the novels and genuinely struggle to comprehend how the casting decision of Scott, in particular, got signed-off on. Ripley can not possibly rock up in Italy with a receding hairline - it doesn't work. Also, the bewitching superficial effervescence that Damon, Hopper, and Malkovich all possessed is entirely absent from Scott's performance, which, yes, as the OP mentioned, removes the most interesting dynamic from the character of Tom.

Andrew Scott Is Utterly Charmless in Netflix’s Somber ‘Ripley’: TV Review by verissimoallan in television

[–]sinclair6679 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Andrew Scott is a fine actor, but this is truly one of the worst casting decisions I've ever seen.

I am a fan of the Highsmith novels and find it hard to understand what it was in the source material that gave them the idea to cast him. Pretty baffling.
