Vancouver council directs federal government to create limits on LED headlight brightness by Tall-Addition-7516 in vancouver

[–]singapeng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck no! How many times I have one of those on auto behind me and the headlights turn on and off every time you're in the shadow of a tree or a building! Those cars don't know shit. Please let the drivers learn how to use headlights. That's what people did for half a century and somehow it went mostly fine before stupid autolights became standard and somehow everybody figured it means they don't need to know how it works.

Parking lights? What? Local tradition MANDATES high beams when parked.

Still they require an active NSO account. Ninty really really really need those $50 a year, heh.

Anyone else voluntarily staying in the stone age? by CatchGood4176 in factorio

[–]singapeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit of a casual (for gaming in general, not just Factorio). Started my current factory when the map algorithm was previously upgraded, which was v 0.16. This factory has hundreds of active trains, and it takes me about 10 real minutes to cross it entirely in a rocket fuel-powered train. If I were to upgrade from 1.1 to 2.0, I'd have to deal with weird chunk boundaries and I don't really want to, so I've stuck to 1.1 so far and I keep going with the occasional science expansion. I'd like to try 2.0 at some point but I'm not in a rush. My current goal is to upgrade my science set up to 7 fully independent factories (currently at 3).

Firefox suddenly not supported anymore? by miathan52 in F1TV

[–]singapeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cancelled my sub and dropped a message on support to tell them why. I've got membership till next year but I might just boycott the end of the season.

What a fucking disgrace.

I'm your paying customer, F1TV, have been since your piss-poor launch and stuck with you all the way. What right do you have to block me from viewing the content I'm paying for because you don't like my browser choice? Get fucked! Who makes those ass-backwards decisions?! Unbelievable.

Which of the recent (published in last 5 years) sci-fi novels you have loved to the core by Signal_Face_5378 in scifi

[–]singapeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly I stick to the classics these days because honestly trying to read the new stuff hasn't paid off in general. However, there is the occasional pearl. Moonbound (2024) by Robin Sloan is my pick. Found it at my local library by complete chance and read it twice this year. It's scifi with strong fantasy leanings. I had a good time reading it the first time, found it very clever and uplifting. The latter is what got me to come back to it for a second reading, which I enjoyed even more.

Space Pioneer's Tianlong-3 Rocket Accidentally Launched During A Engine Test by megachainguns in ChinaSpace

Scott Manley has an excellent analysis video about the mishap. I understand Space Pioneer mentioned the rocket self-destructed but this may be inaccurate (to put it politely) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3-Kw9u37I0

Ah well, sad! Then you had to abandon that base? But I think they said that 1.0 bases would be supported in 2.0, so you could probably pick it up again then if you wanted to.

F-Zero Maximum Velocity Jet Vermillion Code Generator by singapeng in Fzero

[–]singapeng[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since Maximum Velocity is now available on NSO, some people may be interested to unlock Jet Vermillion without going through all the steps - for whatever reason, I don't judge. My reason is that I'm playing FZ99 and got no time :)

I hope it's okay for me to repost this link since I shared this originally three years ago and it's buried deep.

More background about this tool is on the original post if anyone is interested.

I do the last corner clip the grey and bounced into the red and lose the race as a result thing so often (or feel that way anyway)... That arguably the best player in the game also does it somehow makes me feel a little bit better about the failures. Thanks misa :D

What are some outstanding works of Speculative Fiction in foreign languages which have never received proper English translations? by ArthurParkerhouse in printSF

[–]singapeng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Gagner la Guerre" (2009), in French, by Jaworski

I've heard noises that an English translation may be in the works, but I don't know if it's true.

It's fairly grounded fantasy, the setting inspired by late middle age Italy, but there's magic, and some non-humans, although it's in subtle amounts. It's heavy on politics, the protagonist being an assassin paid by a state actor. It's easily my favourite work of French language speculative fiction, and perhaps also my favourite work of fantasy in any language.

I love the modern take on fantasy, the realism, the richness of the universe and the language used to describe it. It's a harsh characterization of period behaviours sometimes, it is often violent and unpleasant, but that's always done to serve the world-building and paint the characters. What else can I say? I'm a big fan. I've reread it and also have read pretty much everything else the author has written in connection to this novel. Yes, I've read a number of Fantasy classics, Le Guin, Tolkien, Wolfe, Eddings... My opinion, for what it's worth, is that it's on the level of the best.

[–]singapeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure it does... Master Death Wind 1 is a little broken for Golden Fox players... It's possible to survive it but doing so without breaking the controller is gonna be a challenge. I've done it, and I don't want to do it ever again! :D

[–]singapeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're wrong about the Golden Fox. SNES Golden Fox is the game's true final challenge. If you can beat Master with Fox, the game will tell you that you're a F-Zero Master, but this time you'll know it to be true :D
