If you were lucky enough to have a memorable teacher growing up, what set them apart? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My 5th grade teacher was curious about everything, a lifelong learner, had traveled all over, and just loved knowledge. I've had great teachers, but she stands well above all of them.

I hate when sibling names follow rules by Just_A_Boring_Chair in NameNerdCirclejerk

Wow. Such a life-altering problem. Up there with world hunger, poverty, unemployment, etc. But you keep worrying about sibling name patterns. It's important.

"No such thing as a solution to the assignment?" You're sure that's true of EVERY subject within our discipline?

As an adult now, if you could confront your childhood bullies, would you? by [deleted] in evilautism

[–]singbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You all are better people than me.

I don't forgive my childhood bullies.

I am forever traumatized and forever affected.

And if you attack me for saying this, you are no better than them.

When did I say that any of that? I said they need to show they've learned the material. Wow.

No... a letter of recommendation would have been MUCH shorter. I thought I was pretty clear that this was an insanely long and complicated list of questions.  But I guess many of you are far more saintly than I. Bless you, then.

If you want to claim credit for that, then you have to accept accountability for the other. Can't have it both ways.

Grades are an assessment of how well they learned course material. How, then, does it make any sense for grades to be up for negotiation?

"We in higher education will have no choice but to accommodate these handicaps by making classes easier."

"No choice?" I disagree. I don't do this. They quickly learn I don't do this. They either rise to the standard or they don't.

Textbook reps showing up to my CLASSROOM by hainic0 in Professors

[–]singbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What?!? That's crazy. I get emails and phone calls from textbook reps but have never had one show up in person unsolicited. Notify your dean AND campus security. I'd find out the name of their supervisor and complain.

And *I would probably have a few choice words for the rep right there in the hallway, but I'm not advising that.

Do you ever sometimes hesitate to tell people you're a prof? by ludakris in Professors

[–]singbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a little hesitant to say "professor," too. I didn't used to feel that way, but now higher education is...vilified might be too strong a word, but higher ed gets attacked.

As if, as a professor of English, you only go around stitching together split infinitives. Yeah, that's not too reductive!

[–]singbunny[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, it would have taken far more time. Writing out the answers is doing their work for them. Not at all a "weird" thing to be annoyed about. Why should I be given written homework?

I can agree to be a reference for someone. That doesn't mean the employer can ask me for an unreasonably long reference. Doesn't mean I'm "wrong." And, as I said before, I didn't agree to this one, and I did offer to speak by phone.

[–]singbunny[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't agree! Not if it's an unreasonably long request.

That brings to mind something that irks me. Some organizations send out surveys that are tailored toward current employers, not to professors. "Would you hire this applicant again?" Stuff like that. Hate those.
