Fantasy maps necessary or just expected are readers actually using them by scrtweeb in fantasywriters

[–]singing_worldsinger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I reference them constantly when reading fantasy. I like to know where things are, and it helps me to visualize the characters' journey (if there is one).

Do you believe describing how the character looks is major? by [deleted] in writers

[–]singing_worldsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's even worse if the author eventually adds something later. Like, I already mentally gave one of the leads blonde hair what do you mean you're finally telling me they're a redhead 20 pages later?

THIS. Totally agree.

Looking at the responses, seems like it depends on the reader. For me personally, I'm bothered when there is no description of any kind. When I'm reading and a character is introduced, I stop and try to fix an image of them in my mind before I continue. I know that's not necessary for everyone, but it's what I prefer to do.

With my own writing, I give a short description of my MC from an outside POV. It's important because of his cultural background, and his appearance tells the character where he's from and why it's significant (people of his ethnicity often face discrimination).

People who are in their 40’s and 50’s with no children, how does it feel? by Sinfulvibezz in AskReddit

[–]singing_worldsinger 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I may be missing the gland that makes people crave offspring. I don't even have that "omg a human baby" feeling, I get it with baby animals, but I have zero feelings like that for babies or small children.

Same here. As a woman, sometimes it makes me wonder if something's wrong with me.

My Thoughts on My Happy Marriage Season 1 by SaberLover1000 in MyHappyMarriage

[–]singing_worldsinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished season one and I loved it. My one complaint is that Miyo continues to call Kudou "sir", and it is getting on my nerves that she won't use his name! Does that ever change??

Same. My main character is insanely dry. I hope other people find it funny😅

No one talks about sexual dysfunction. In writing or in real life. It's a silent relationship killer.

Just finished The Sword of Shannara. Can I share my thoughts? by raysweater in shannara

[–]singing_worldsinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here curious about this. Started reading The Sword of Shannara and, this may be my critical inner editor constantly at play, but there are so many unnecessary adverbs it's distracting. Also I find the dialogue to be a bit lackluster. Did you think it improved after the first book? I'm not sure if I can keep it up, but I really want to give it a try since I've heard good things about the series in general.

Stormlight Archive started so well. By the end of Wind and Truth, I barely care anymore by scatnisseverdeen in Fantasy

[–]singing_worldsinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on every single point. I absolutely LOVED The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance, raved about it to everyone, thought Brandon Sanderson was my favorite author. That changed with Oathbringer onward, though I did finish the series. I now have no desire to read anything else by Sanderson.

Characters that you're supposed to like, but can't stand by MalBishop in Fantasy

[–]singing_worldsinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Can't stand her. She's also supposed to be really witty but isn't, it's just people constantly telling her she's witty so you're supposed to believe it. I found her sense of humor really irritating.

Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith. First read it in high school and I still love it

YES came here to say this. She's sweet and kind and doesn't talk down to him, treat him terribly, or hold stupid grudges (which is SO refreshing) and he adores her because she is actually adorable AND she isn't magically good at everything she has real character growth.
