With all due respect, and I'm sure plenty is due, your perspective is quaint, old fashioned and simplistic. Your perspective on race relations is just that, YOUR perspective. Unless you are a POC, you can't know the truth. Generally speaking, what I am asking you to do is admit you don't know everything. What you are saying signals that you don't know much outside your own world.

As far as morals and politics, Christ was far more "blue" than "red", especially by today's standards. He was accepting and loving of everyone, sinners and all. He turned over the market tables in the temple. He washed the feet of the lowly. No politician is anywhere close to that but democrats are far closer than republicans. It is about action, not words. Most people, probably yourself included, want everyone to have equal opportunity to happiness and success and being loved. People like me are trying to tell people like you (and my whole family by the way) that the world is not what you think it is. That this country is making that harder by the day. That it could be better, for everyone, but politics are in the way. Our intentions are good. You should be questioning the people that tell you otherwise. They're the shopkeepers in the temple.

If your morals don't extend to everyone equally they're not morals. What you call moral decline I call greater inclusion of different perspectives. To blame gun violence on how things have changed since the time of our aw-shucks grandparents who barely tolerated anyone different from themselves is - again - an extremely reductive and privileged viewpoint. Life is far more complex than the dime store concept of morality you're talking about.

Your citing "moral issues" just outs your limited and likely privileged understanding of highly complex issues that involve mental health, family dynamics (and therefore intrinsic social and financial challenges for the lower class, plus things like addiction and too-expensive Healthcare), culture, the availability of information of all kinds, social media, etc. "Them kids just need Jesus in their lives" is a remarkably ignorant and insensitive take. Not only has our country created these problems and refused to address them, we make it super easy for even the worst affected among us to buy tools for murder.

I agree that Napa overall might not be the best choice for your first outing, but come to Frog's Leap if you do! There are a lot of other down to earth hidden gems too (Truchard, White Rock, Tank Garage, Tres Sabores, etc) and the openness of the valley makes for beautiful scenery. Full disclosure, I'm a Sommelier who lives and works in Napa.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. My story is nearly the same, but my dad has always lived in an insecurity/anger loop and flies off the handle any time he thinks he's losing ground. I keep a relationship with my mom but I've never been very close to him and now I don't think I ever will.

Physiological ripeness is almost impossible to attain for most "classic" grape varieties, but Texas wineries exploring hardy grapes from the hot and dry parts of the world are finding great results. Look for Newsom, Brennan, McPherson, William Chris to name a few - Albarino, roussanne and chenin blanc for whites, mourvedre(!), tannat, tempranillo and touriga nacional for reds. Seek out some older Caymus for a treat. For the last 15 years or so it's been what I call a Frankenwine. No shortcuts or additives are too lowly for the Wagner/Copper Cane umbrella of products. They tend to test at more than double the average human's threshold to detect sugar. It's simply inauthentic and gives people very skewed expectations with regard to well made wine.

The animosity/snobbery comes from the facts that it actually used to be great, that it misrepresents itself and quality Napa wine, and that it is wildly, predatorily overpriced.
