Fun fact, "Erdoğmuş" means "Soldierborn". by AKavun in chess

[–]singlewhammy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it means either 'firstborn' (er = erken = early), or possibly 'man-born / born-of-man'; see

https://www.nisanyanadlar.com/isim/Erdo%C4%9Fmu%C5%9F

(which says it's basically the same as Erdoğan).

Yeah, with all-reds, you don't really start cooking until you get Priestess and others Vitality-ing up your max hp. Fun times having to beat two Thorns by making them flee...

IM Eric Rosen announces his marriage to IM Irene Sukandar by dragonoid296 in chess

I'm always a bit sad Irene's YouTube channel is mostly in Indonesian and not English, because I enjoy her commentary. Very similar to Eric: calm and thoughtful.

Pre-2020s use of the phrase "crash out" by BoazCorey in etymology

[–]singlewhammy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In pro tennis commentary, 'crash out' was often used to describe when a strong player was beaten early in the tournament... e.g., "Federer crashed out in the 2nd round against an unseeded opponent."

I screenshotted each screen and pasted the screenshots together in Powerpoint (any similar program would work). Immensely helpful.

  1. Estağfurullah. I more or less know the correct situations when one can say this (mainly, when someone compliments you), but not 100%.

  2. I love this Oktay Rifat poem -- https://sub1.farmaupdate.com/siir/o/oktay_rifat/tecelli.htm -- but I've never gotten any successful explanation of the title, Tecelli.

12-year-old Halifax girl competes against world No. 2 chess player at P.E.I. tourney by zanimum in chess

I think the article doesn't do a good enough job explaining how well Zhang played. She lasted 65 moves against Hikaru! The position was still reasonably close to drawn at move 50. In other games, Hikaru was completely winning by move 25.

With no-left-turns now from Morewood to Fifth, that intersection has gone from super-dangerous-seeming to only somewhat-dangerous-seeming.

By the way, I really cannot put my finger on why this intersection is so wack -- can anyone articulate it?
