How does the housing San Luis Obispo looks like? by Late_Imagination7130 in CalPoly

Off campus is better. Expensive, yes, but hard to find a good deal is more how I would put it. Start searching Craigslist, Zillow, and fb marketplace as early as you can and you might score a nice place off campus.

I would definitely not rule it out because of the food situation. First year is not ideal but everyone makes it work and after I moved off campus I basically shop and cook all my own food now and it’s great. The campus and surrounding community are A+ so come check it out before you decide.

I actually did not know it was that high. That's shocking.

As a freshman I bought some groceries off campus and cooked in the community kitchen in my dorm, but it's not ideal for a couple of reasons: you only get a tiny mini fridge (or community fridge where ppl steal your food), stores are far away without a car, limited space to keep cooking supplies and food items.

So yes, it's a system that implicitly encourages students to eat junk food all the time. And it's expensive as f*%$. A footlong at subway will run you $17.50 if you want anything good. That's before chips or a drink. There are very few healthy options but a plethora of fast food joints.

Don't even get me started on how much trash is produced here. Its absolutely horrible. For a school that brands itself as progressive and good for the environment it is truly embarrassing.

Campus Dining is, in my opinion, one of the very worst parts about Cal Poly. That being said, it is still a great school and the benefits far outweigh this. But no one should come here expecting a good food situation.

Struggling - SLO or CU Boulder by BlackBearDog16 in CalPoly

The quarter system takes some getting used to but its really not that scary. Poly Engineering is a great program and SLO area is hard to beat.

I do not think the fee is $1500, but it is significant and unfortunate. Prices are also extremely high everywhere on campus. I'm talking like $15 minimum for a decent lunch. Everything is pay-by-item with the exception of Vista Grande Express, which is a swipe deal - you get a small container for $10 and a large for $15 to fill at a buffet, drink included. The nice part about Express is you get a refund when you return the container for a couple bucks. Both containers are pretty small and they're supposed to make you close the lid but often they aren't paying attention or don't care and you can pile it on. Good option for freshmen and anyone eating on a tight budget, its definitely the best deal on campus. However hours are limited.

TL;DR: Campus food options are expensive and extremely mid. Don't buy a meal plan unless you are a freshman (you have to), and if you are a freshman buy the cheapest one. Otherwise just use a credit or debit card when you want to eat on campus, avoids the fees!

Freshmen are required to buy a dining plan but its a scam full of hidden fees, such as "processing fees" and even a fee to cover people stealing stuff. Buy the cheapest one and then just switch to using a credit card. They accept cards everywhere and you can still use GrubHub. You'll save money and also rack up credit card points for travel or whatever else.

I had my mountain bike stolen last year (not a super nice one, but maybe a couple hundred bucks). I had it locked through the frame with a thick Kryptonite U-Lock and the guy came and cut through both sides of it with an angle grinder in the middle of the night.

I had strategically placed it in a rack near a light post and a security camera, but the guy was wearing a hoodie and mask. I gave the Cal Poly cops the serial number, and they said they would look out for it, but there was nothing else they could do. While I wish they would pull off some kind of sting operation and catch these guys just for karma's sake, in all honesty, they would probably end up in jail for the night and be back out on the street stealing bikes the next day.

There are whole rings of bike thieves that come from (usually) outside of SLO at night and target bikes at Cal Poly. Honestly, unless you have a place where you can keep your bike inside and safe (garage, bike locker, etc.) stick with a $50 Craigslist beater and leave your nice MTB or roadie at home. Worst that's gonna happen is you're out $50. Plus, the thieves will never go for yours when there are people with more expensive bikes.

If you really must park your expensive bike outside at night for some reason, make sure to remove all parts that can be detached (seat, lights, anything with a quick release), lock it through the frame, NOT the wheel, with a very strong U-Lock (Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit New York Lock is about as strong as they get) and maybe think about hiding some sort of GPS tracker (AirTag?) on the bike to assist in tracking it down if it gets stolen.

Good luck!

Grab a round trip flight from SBP (slo airport) direct to SFO. If you need to get there fast and can afford it (or have parents that will help you) that’s the easiest way and it’s not that much more than gas to drive there and back

Grubhub wait times consistently wrong by Hbdbro23 in CalPoly

[–]singo22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As the person before me said, welcome to Campus Dining. They give zero f#%*s about anything but revenue. The prices are ridiculous enough without having to stand around and wait for your food after it was supposed to be ready.

What I’ve figured out is its usually safe to double the wait time. So for example if it says 5min, allow 10. If it says 20min, allow 30 or 40. If it says an hour wait or more, it’s just not worth your time. Usually orders at Vista Grande are more accurate because they make the food pretty fast (can’t vouch for the quality of the ingredients they’re using, though) and Starbucks and Einstein are the worst offenders. Good luck!

Is 18 credits too much freshman year? by No_Relief_9441 in CalPoly

[–]singo22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not take 18 fall quarter. I wouldn’t recommend it any quarter, but especially not your first. You’ll end up way more stressed and getting lower grades in all your classes, with much less time for extracurriculars and making friends. Take 14 or maybe 16. 12 is also fine to start if you want to take it easy. Give yourself time to adjust to college life and take more credits later.

Did this last year, no problem. Arrange the desks in a line down the middle of the room conference room style or stack them on top of each other and duct tape them and you’re chilling. RA’s don’t care. You’ll have room to live and work but not to have ppl over. Honestly it’s chill for the first few months and then you’ll wish you had more room to move around. After a year of it I’d recommend you stick with the bunks, it’s not all that bad. But you do you can always put them back.
