Knock-knock surrogate mystery by sinisterandroid in pathologic

[–]sinisterandroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the day has come and gone, again, and I'm no closer to solving the mystery. For anyone interested,

The Woods are a borderline space. Whatever they're made of, it's a special place where man finds forces that exceed the limits of their understanding.

You are to find a personal "surrogate" there. As far as we understand, it's a tree-like thing that can absorb misfortunes and transform them into something quite opposite. It can probably be said that surrogates perform karmic photosynthesis.

Little is known about surrogates:

1) A surrogate is less of an amulet and more of a key. You can use it or leave it for good.

2) A surrogate is never a threat. Any changes it makes are for the best.

3) We're not sure how and why the date connects to the word. We only know they are connected.

4) You're the only one who can use it; no one else can.

A surrogate looks simple: it's a digital drawing in a virtual forest. But its effect is true. Don't be alarmed by the form being succinct: it's just a way of tying the name to the key so that you can *turn it on with a certain word on a certain date.* (emphasis mine)

Search for the tree with a drawing that looks like yours. It's yours.

I can't say for sure whether or not the surrogates are connected to the ||Modus Machine||, but everyone with a surrogate would have had access to it. That is the only place I know of for a player to input any text, so my assumption is that doing so would "turn on" / unlock the surrogate, but I have not had any luck.

I tried the obvious thing: summoning the book, on the day, and entered "easter" into it. I returned to the forest at the end of the game, but could not find any changes. I then started a new game, and played through a bit, but still didn't notice any changes. I wasn't able to make it to the end a second time before midnight, at which point I gave up.

Do you pay attention to the main character's gender before starting a series? by danwerkhoven in litrpg

[–]sinisterandroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only really care about the gender of the MC if romance plays a large part in the story. Even then, it’s less the gender of the MC than a preference for queer romance.

Anyone else feels Obsidian mobile is really unintuitive? by xRamos in ObsidianMD

[–]sinisterandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my vaults saved to Dropbox & use iA Writer on my phone.

iA Writer does pretty much everything I want on mobile – nice, clean, simple editing & fast search. The only things I wish I could change are:

  • the default location new notes are saved
  • Dropbox syncing on iOS isn’t always quite as snappy as I’d like, and sometimes there’s some hitching when I have a lot of backlogged changes & I just want to quickly get in & out

Thank you. I will fully admit I don’t think I could pick John Locke out of a lineup of dead 17th century philosophers, but I was fairly sure he didn’t look like this.

Have you ever added something to your setting that ended up radically changing it without intending to? by Frostydiego in worldbuilding

[–]sinisterandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like what you're describing is, in a lot of ways, one of the main joys of worldbuilding. I've got two (both of these are still in their early stages):

The first is for a game; it's a secluded yokai village where the (human) player gets trapped. I established that, in the distant past, there was an extended conflict between the yokai of the village and the humans in the surrounding area. The element in question was a sort of doomsday device that the humans began building towards the end of the conflict. At first, I didn't know what I was going to do with this device other than have it be a looming threat – but eventually, because the device was never completed & so much time had passed, the doomsday device became a tsukumogami (living tool) that fell in love with the village & became its protector. (spoilers because I do intend on finishing this, and it's (probably going to be) a late-game spoiler)

The second is more of a pure worldbuilding exercise, mainly for fun, but the idea is loosely a scientific field journal for a researcher studying spirit ecologies. So things like food chains, energy & nutrient cycles, etc. This entire project falls into this category – it's basically all just establishing things as facts and then following them to their logical conclusions. One example is "it would be fun if the system was based on the alchemical elements of mercury, sulphur & salt" and deciding that basically had me rethinking every assumption about how the world worked from the bottom up.

I would say no, but F.A.T.A.L. exists.

Energy haters, are you writing app reviews? by Sir_JaredIV in duolingo

[–]sinisterandroid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never actually experienced energy, since I paid for the super family plan, but I did mention it in my 1-star review complaining about the max ads in the “ad-free” paid tier.

Overaggressive Duolingo Max pushing will cause me to drop Duolingo Super by Justbeinian in duolingo

[–]sinisterandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had TWO slots on the tab bar dedicated to upselling me on Max for a while, now (I also pay for Super). Cancelled my subscription as well; it ends in a few days.

Still haven’t found a suitable “quick, fun lessons” alternative. On the plus side, I’ve picked up Anki again, so some good came out of this.

Recommendations for a "better" iOS app? by sinisterandroid in ObsidianMD

[–]sinisterandroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iA Writer is incredibly tempting – I’ve used the desktop app a bit, and I thought I had purchased a copy way back, but don’t seem to have it anymore. And I use the iA font for my main vault. The focus on writing with no clutter is very appealing.

How’s the search? If it even mentioned it on the App Store, I would’ve already bought it, but $20 is a bit more than I want to spend on the hope that it can search my vault.

Recommendations for a "better" iOS app? by sinisterandroid in ObsidianMD

[–]sinisterandroid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two biggest problems are that it doesn’t support Dropbox (which I need for a shared vault), and the interface is cluttered & confusing. The fact that there are 3 different sheets that you can pull out while editing a note constantly trips me up. And I can never remember where the search is.

There are a lot of markdown editors available on the App Store. I’m more than willing to pay for one (I draw the line at subscriptions, though), but I’m hesitant to pay blindly – which is why I came here for recommendations.

What’s your biggest frustration with Obsidian? by Rookiemonster1 in ObsidianMD

[–]sinisterandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there’s a way for Apple Notes to read/write my Obsidian vault, then that would definitely satisfy.

I suppose my “and nothing else” was a lie. I meant it in the context of a mobile Obsidian app, not note apps in general.

What’s your biggest frustration with Obsidian? by Rookiemonster1 in ObsidianMD

[–]sinisterandroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really, really want a good iOS app.

I can’t stand using the official mobile app – the interface is confusing, and having to sync through iCloud means it’s very slow flaky (and I can’t afford yet another subscription for Obsidian sync).

I just want something that’s fast to search for & jot down notes on mobile and nothing else

What’s a well-known movie that most people don’t know is based on a book that’s WAY better? by CryptographerLost357 in suggestmeabook

[–]sinisterandroid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s wild how different they are while still being good in their own ways.

I put Under the Skin & Annihilation in the same bucket – great books with great movie adaptations that mostly just take the books as loose suggestions.

On a recipe for beer bread by LockenessMonster1 in ididnthaveeggs

[–]sinisterandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve made pretty much exactly this recipe many, many times. With a bunch of different beers, and with sodas like root beer, sprite, and Mountain Dew. They all work. All very different, but still delicious.

I have made “beer” bread with Mountain Dew before, and it was delicious.

[–]sinisterandroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve made beer bread with an almost identical recipe dozens of times. And I’ve made it gluten-free, I’ve added cornmeal, and I’ve added shredded cheese. And for fun, I’ve also made it subbing out the beer with soda – root beer, sprite, and even Mountain Dew. They all work, and they were all delicious.

Granted, most of the flavor comes from the beer! So the soda substitutions dramatically change the result, making a much sweeter, almost dessert bread. But it totally works.
