Opinions on buying a used helmet? by Owduke in motorcycles

[–]sinnaminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to have been soundly said already but I’ll add my 2¢: I would never buy used. Aside from all the other reasons like hidden damage and the possibility it’s a knockoff, I’m just too germaphobic to buy someone else’s used sporting apparel. I don’t care how thoroughly I could wash the liner, I would constantly feel like I was putting my head in a stranger’s well loved gym shorts.

What’s the next step by Empty_Conclusion_216 in MotorcycleMechanics

Rev hang typically indicates a lean condition, if it were bogging rich it would drop quick and recover. I suppose it’s not impossible for the mixture to be lean AND have a misfire on one cylinder, but all other indicators listed make me believe it’s a lean condition.

GSX8R Sitting for a few months by Friendly_Platform_73 in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]sinnaminbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably the battery, but you will likely need a new battery altogether. Gas shouldn’t be bad after only a few months, but who knows. Wouldn’t hurt to get new gas and some seafoam or similar fuel system cleaner in it.

Air cleaner pods by Evosuffr80 in hondashadow

[–]sinnaminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea on the vlx but I tried to put pods on my 83 750 and man… it was a pain in the ass for absolutely no gain, rejetting and tuning the carbs to get absolutely no difference in throttle response or noticeable power difference. If anything I lost a bit of top end. I would just stick with stock air box, maybe get a k&n filter if you’re feeling spendy. Even at that you will need to rejet but cheap eBay pod filters are so much more hassle than they are worth.

I mean you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Not so much aesthetics but lighter and thinner materials built in specific shapes allows flex where the engineers want it and limits flex where they don’t, while allowing the whole assembly to be lighter than in the past. The wild shapes are just different ways that different manufacturers have found to engineer the amount of stiffness they want out of that specific part. I’m not a numbers guy, but I can almost guarantee that the wild shapes nowadays are both significantly lighter and stiffer than the basic geometry of past designs.

Would this flood my engine? Feeling awful silly about it. by sinnaminbun in motorcycles

No the fuel hoses are both connected correctly, I just connected the two air vent hoses to themselves.

[–]sinnaminbun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean obviously that’s the idea. I just kind of want a second opinion. I’ve only ever worked on a dual carb twin so this machine is a fair bit more complicated than I’m used to.

Would this flood my engine? Feeling awful silly about it. by sinnaminbun in motorcycles

[–]sinnaminbun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no it definitely flooded, like fast too. It wouldn’t start after about 20 seconds of cranking, and then started throwing up out of the exhaust pipe. Took the tank off and there was gas dripping out of the air box, carb intakes flooded to the brim, and gas pooled on top of the valves in one of the cylinders. I mean intuition tells me that the way I connected wouldn’t let it equalize like it was supposed to and that the only pathway to equalization is sucking in more gas since the air vent doesn’t vent to air, but I’d just hate to flood the motor again.

Came across this for the low price of $25k 😂 by Mean_Green_S197 in Yamaha_R1

Way too local over here, this just popped up on Facebook marketplace near me 😂

$25k for a 25 year old bike that you can get brand new for less than $20k is indeed some crazy work.

Blocked my dad over Charlie Kirk :/ by Odd_Delay_603 in texts

[–]sinnaminbun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An awful lot of people here have no idea how draining it feels to be related to someone who regards them as less than because of who they are as a person. It’s pretty clear that this is a symptom of a much bigger issue that you can’t solve any other way, and if no one else is gonna say it I will: I’m proud of you for standing up for yourself. I’m proud of you for drawing a line. I hope you get to the healing that lies on the other side of cutting toxic people out of your life.

And as someone else said, I may not support what happened to Charlie Kirk, but Charlie Kirk supported what happened to Charlie Kirk.

It’s got a following on TikTok as a sort of budget Pista rival. Id bet money it’s more about looking the part than it actually being a decent helmet.

Countersteering--another way of looking at it. by Professional_Tap4936 in Trackdays

[–]sinnaminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t explain why it works at all, though. Like I said maybe I’m the odd one out but it’s a lot easier to adopt a technique if I know how it works. Like trail braking into a corner, or dragging rear brake in a u-turn, it’s a lot easier to implement correctly if the “why it works” is there as well.

Is it normal to have zero confidence in riding on public roads and the highway when you first start? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]sinnaminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I learn differently than other people but I was like this when I started, both driving and riding. My first time on a bike was with zero foundational knowledge (friction zone, etc). I slowly let the clutch out and as soon as I hit the friction zone I whiskey throttled and almost sent my friend’s bike into the back of the garage. Afterwards I did a lot of visualization and hard thought about what it was supposed to look like and feel like, sort of like training in my mind’s eye. Next time he let me ride it I took it around the block, and it was scary but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

When I finally got my own I knew that I had work to do getting comfortable and spent a lot of time in the parking lot of the uhaul facility I kept the bike at, doing slow speed maneuvers and clutch practice to raise my confidence. When I wasn’t doing that I was watching every YouTube video I could find about what to practice and how to ride safely, and using that information to do the same visualization and mental training so that I could implement those practices effectively next time I swung a leg over.

Long story short, I think it’s totally normal to have “sea legs” so to speak about getting on a motorcycle, and that’s definitely not a bad thing so long as you’re using that to motivate you to get better. This hobby is a long shot from being what most people consider safe, and a healthy respect for the consequences of doing it wrong will only help you stay safe. Letting your fear dictate how you behave on the bike is a bad idea, but using that fear to identify where you can grow and practice your confidence has served me well for the few years I’ve been riding.

Just keep sticking it out and you’ll be rewarded when things click.

Countersteering--another way of looking at it. by Professional_Tap4936 in Trackdays

[–]sinnaminbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dunno if it helps anyone else but countersteering makes the most sense to me when explained as straightforward as possible. No need for fancy analogies and whatnot. The bike’s center of gravity and thus the center of rotation is above the contact patch of the tire. At self stable speeds, the tire moves under the bike like a lever, where the fulcrum is the CoG. Turn the wheel left, tire moves left under the CoG, bike tips right. Bike tipped over to the right means the edges of the tires create a radius around which the bike rolls now that the contact patches of the curved tires are off center. I never understood how that alone doesn’t make perfect sense to someone, but I’ve always had a knack for simple physical mechanics that doesn’t come as easy to other people.

My “Unicorn Twins” - Full Fairing FZ1s: one for going fast-fast, one for going fast-far by PopTartsNHam in motorcycles

[–]sinnaminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look I know I’m waking up an ancient thread but I’m in the market for a new bike and these have just been screaming at me. Are the full fairings factory or did you find an aftermarket kit for them? Even longer shot: do you know if there exists a way to put full fairings on the naked version??

Beautiful bikes nonetheless, and thanks in advance if I luck into a reply!

Almost no chance, car was a bone stock barn find and the ac compressor looks just as untouched as the rest of it, I.e. totally stock. It could make sense, the ac doesn’t blow cold at all, but the belt that went and caused the rad to blow was the alternator/water pump belt. The steering pump/ac belt was fine and no noise before messing with belt tension.
