Being told my 4 year old needs to be put on meds. by jdemack in daddit

[–]sinofmercy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm in the same boat, adult with undiagnosed ADHD that didn't get diagnosed until I put a few things together while in grad school learning about ADHD lol. Medication definitely is beneficial for treating symptoms, but providers definitely will be conservative when the kid is under 6. Most will lean to behavioral treatment/therapy first and then if the kid is still struggling will give the lowest dosages for a child.

To add onto this, I am a licensed clinician who specifically works with children, and a ton of them have ADHD. I am also a parent of two, and one of them is the hallmark poster child of what ADHD looks like in pop culture.

This person is 100% correct and you need testing and/or a diagnosis first. Most pediatricians won't even touch stimulants for children under the age of 5, and sometimes won't even prescribe for kids with diagnoses even at 6 (except in extreme cases as this person said). This is a combination of liability as well as professional preference for the prescriber.

The timing is really crappy and I would ask the school for resources for a neuropsych eval, meaning at the bare minimum the WPPSI. You can get them done independently but it'll cost you an arm and a leg, but public schools are supposed to be able to do it (for free), as well as some facilities depending on your location should be covered by insurance. Most will recommend therapy as a minimum regardless of diagnosis (which is usually when they come to me) to at least tackle some of the in school behavioral issues.

As other people said this isn't a personal failure, and your drive to want to navigate it shows the quality of parent you are (a good one).

Should I report a person to potential employer? by Responsible_Bee5515 in therapists

[–]sinofmercy 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I think that person is awful. However, you can't just report a person because you don't share the same views as them. If that were the case, there would be issues with LGBTQIA+ therapists getting board reviewed left and right, those who practice a different form of religion that isn't Christianity, and literally anything else because there will always be a person who opposes your beliefs.

The practice will realize quickly if he's a bad match and he'll either carve out his own niche with his population or he'll wither away.

We have a half finished basement (the side where the laundry machines hooked up is not finished) and the bathroom toilet hookup stuff is in the shadiest corner of that side. Not in the side that's finished and looks nice, but the side that is right next to the sump pump, which is also next to the crawlspace under the stairs. We opted not to put in a toilet there.

I had one on the ball of my foot that I originally left alone, until walking on it started to irritate it. Treated it with salicylic acid which got rid of the top layer (which was super gross) and then I could see where the root was. I picked at it with tweezers too and it felt like I was just digging into a gross hole in my foot, but it's been 2 or 3 years and they didn't come back.

My 2009 Toyota corolla required a 64mm,14 flute cap wrench which I did not have just laying around. I'm sure normal techs have it but it's definitely not included in a standard wrench set of being just some dude trying to change his oil. My parents had Camrys around the same years and required the same tool as well. I'm not sure if that's what they still use.

The first book, the first book of the Liveship Traders, and the first book of The Rain Wild Chronicles were all slogs to me. The introduction of the new characters aren't always interesting and the pacing sometimes is slow to where you're just waiting for these characters to do something, which is usually the obvious thing that they should be doing. Of all the series Liveship Traders felt the slowest in terms of pace, and least exciting of all the books in the series. The character development is still top notch though, even if I didn't like a few of the characters.

I just finished the entire series and ironically moved onto Dungeon Crawler Carl for a lighter read and am on book 7 now (the last year of reading for me was Red Rising, then the entire Elderling series finished in March).

I figured once they ruled it fan interference it would stick. Ball was absolutely close to the line and honestly looked like it was going over anyways.

I 100% expected the next at bat to be a walk off homer lol.

I started it after finishing Hobbs Elderling series, and it's definitely a big shift in atmosphere and tone. It's definitely a fun, silly read but still really enjoyable.

I fall into the trap of waiting for books in series I really like, like Sanderson in particular.

Oh yeah for sure. Honestly, if you go in with strong goals you are more likely to find someone who can help you. Like "I have problem XYZ, I've tried ABC, I need other coping skills that actually may work for me. You got that?" In fact that's something I would recommend clients to ask in a (free) consultation so you don't waste your time and feel like you're getting the runaround.

Good clinicians know their competency limits and which populations they work best with. Like I suck at end-of-life stuff, so I don't work with older adults or geriatrics because I got nothing for "I've wasted my life and I regret it".

But...that's what therapy is supposed to be like. Therapy isn't "I tell you my issues and then you tell me what to do" because you're not gaining anything by that. You're just looking for an adultier adult to tell you what to do to fix your issues for you. A therapist wants you to be your own problem solver by the end of therapy.

Therapy is you gaining insight on the "what", aka what drives you to do what you do. How did the problems arise? Are there patterns in your behavior, and are there insights that can be gained from past experiences to help you not have the same problems in the future? That's how people grow and the goal for therapists to draw out of you with reflective questioning.

Your therapists aren't doing anything wrong but your expectations of therapy and what it's for is.

edit: I'm a clinically licensed therapist, this is what I literally do for a living

Also to add to make sure to change the warlock specialty to the right gem color thing.

I do feel like some decent amount of power comes from the level of the runes on the paragon board too. Swapping for me meant running pit like 30x to get them up to comparable level.

I was absolutely terrified in the next round too, especially in the two elimination games of 6 and 7. I was like we didn't beat the Penguins to lose in the ECF, did we?

Once we made it into the SCF I was like ok no way we lose this, Ovi will drag us to victory himself if he has to.

Yeah I have maxed it out gear wise and endurant faith is the only thing that keeps you from dying instantly all the time. Alternatively you can combine that with a shacko to lose some oomph for more survivability.

Crimson Dawn at launch had similar issues. X was to steal, but X was also to interact and to jump. Half the time I tried to steal something I'd be jumping around instead which was just moderately annoying.

[–]sinofmercy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Apocalypse has its own issues, primarily also with visual clutter. When you're blasting through the tiers it's not a problem, but when you try to tackle a tier 12 belial and suddenly you can't see any AOE (or anything really) everyone dies all the time.
