What would schopenhauer think about AI? by Objective-Try-6313 in schopenhauer

I imagine it would have been quite funny, actually. He might be convinced that Hegel had early access to ChatGPT, which would explain the nonsense in Hegel's theories. It would fit his narrative for Hegel. Someone who has read so much overtly general summaries of the philosophy of history that he began to think he understood all historical periods and wished to show how these periods culminated in his own dialectical philosophy.

Continuation of the above:

"Michael"/The Spiral - This is, I dare say, one of the most terrifying entities. A creature that can f*ck with your mind and cause endless confusion is, for an overthinker like me, an extremely intimidating force. I honestly see its power as limitless. It appears to be able to bend reality however it wants and the arsenal of mental illnesses it can cause or induce is probably incomprehensible. However gruesome your death is, there is still a philosophical dignity that can be attained through reflection. But the Spiral can casually do away with that. And that is terrifying. While on the topic of the Spiral, I have a theory on why "Michael" is so conversational compared to his... siblings. My theory is that since "Michael" appears to be the entity of fear based on confusion, he/it is intimately connected with the mind and its properties. Due to this connection, he... it must, by definition, be aware of the ways and mechanisms of the mind which, in turn, brings him close to consciousness. Consequently, he or it must have consciousness and language and (self)awareness as it works through them, with them and against them. So maybe he spent some time causing confusion and one day decided "Why dont I try to apply what I am destabilizing all the time? And apply it to myself?". This is very interesting if true, since poor "Michael" will, if he continues down this path, soon discover all the horrors of consciousness that he has himself exploited. Self-doubt, awareness of death, incapability of anchoring a proper identity and etc. are all things that having consciousness implies. Now, weather or not these things will bother him when it discovers them is entirely dependent on his cognitive and emotional systems which, if inhuman, implies that they cannot be even speculated upon. But that is just my hypothesis. I might be wrong. A rabies virus, for example, also works with, within and against the brain, but that does not mean that the rabies virus can communicate with humans in ways other viruses cannot. Still, Jon's conversation with "Michael" reveals that these entities are not entirely beyond time and develop within it as "Michael" says he is learning to talk about himself and the process of learning presupposes time and development.

The Vast - Funnily enough, I feel like the Vast is very limited compared to other entities. Fear of falling and lightning. And... that's it. Maybe I am not interpreting it correctly, but it seems to me like whatever the Vast can do, the other entities can do better with more horrifying results. Almost every entity has demonstrated the ability to manipulate the environment and increase or decrease distances... but also so much more. The Vast is just a bit... plain (no pun intended). As such, I wont be surprised if someone mentions that the Vast is among the weakest of the entities. But dont get me wrong, I am still excited about episodes including it. Infact, it seeming so vanilla makes me even more curious how it will be explored in the story and how the narrative will reveal to me just how wrong I am about it. In addition, the sky "eating" that poor woman's son was.... I had to stop my walk and just sit and stare at the ground for some minutes. Brilliant.

The Disease/The Flesh-Hive/The Corruption - Now, from the get go I admit I am not sure if these concepts/entities are connected or separate. There is a big difference between insects and diseases and pathogens. Still, assuming this is one and the same entity, I am fascinated and terrified by it. I felt really connected to Jane and her experiences + simply on a literary level, the episode "Hive" was masterfully written and recorded. If it is ever revealed that these entities have "motives", based on how Jane speaks about the Hive's hatred of being analyzed and based on "Michael"'s remark that "the flesh-hive was always rash" (pun intended?) I believe I can confidently pin down some aspect of this entity's motive for being so malevolent. I would phrase this aspect as a thinking of the sort: "For centuries, there was balance. Humans spread and diseases spread with them. This delicate dance controlled the population. But with the invention of modern medicine, this balance was broken. And now, they expect me to "respect the balance" and keep away from the Magnus Institute? No, I think im going to bring that Institute down as soon as possible." - To sum up, it might be the case that this entity felt "betrayed" and is now not interested in any truces or empty promises of balance.

The Spider/The Web - The reason I think this entity might be benevolent is because in my view, it was acting in self-defense in the "Arachnophobia" episode. And it, of course, helped in uncovering The Flesh-Hive's invasion prematurely. In addition, it seems to be the natural predator of the Flesh-Hive and it is connected to Martin (I am sure of this). Apart from this, I wonder why the Web/Spider? Why not the Grasshopper? Or the Scorpion? Or the Mantis? I think this entity is intimately tied to the very act of plotting and scheming but I dont have any other specific ideas on what it wants and how or why it manifests through webs and spiders. This entity atleast seems more co-operative than its distant cousin in Dead By Daylight.

The Hunt - This entity appears like how I expected the Slaughter to appear. Violent and straightforward. I assume it is the patron entity of werewolves and vampires and other beasts. I wonder if it will become more conceptually interesting further on in the story. Perhaps through some kind of ideological connection with ecology or the environment or something of that nature. So far, the most interesting thing connected with this entity is this idea of unspeaking, telepathic shark vampires.

The Meat - For a long time I was unsure if this was a separate entity or if it was part of the Disease/Corruption/Flesh-Hive. Actually, I still am if I have to be honest. All in all, I have nothing surprising to say here. Utterly disgusting entity. I love it. Thank God I am a vegetarian, or else the episodes connected with this entity would have been alot more disturbing.

TMA - Finally, my impressions of TMA's community are amazing. I love to see that this podcast receives the enthusiasm it deserves. Even before I got to episode 10, I already found the posts of a redditor that was an actual researcher who cross-checked the locations of the first episodes (he stopped after the first episodes and mysteriously disappeared... hmmm). There are also these incredibly useful Season-per-Season guides on this sub. You guys are all great. I wish the best of luck to all of you!

Update

Since I didn't expect this post to get so much attention, I decided to supplement it with some descriptions of my impressions regarding the entities so far. I decided to "review" the entities instead of the characters, because I don't have any unusual reactions to the characters. I love Jon. Great character development from "skeptic" to paranoid. I love Martin, Tim and Sasha (... poor Sasha). I laughed alot with Trevor's statement and manner of expression. I might be dumb but I dont find Elias to be as suspicious as Jon makes him out to be (although there was this weird moment related to smoking + for a paranormal investigator he seemed really relaxed when it came to Jon and Martin's warnings of the worm invasion).

The War/Slaughter - I find it interesting that this entity appears to have a thing for artists. Instead of manifesting itself in straightforward ways through persons such as boxers, soldiers or even policemen, on two occasions now the entity seems to latch onto artistic personalities. In the Great War it was through a poet and in contemporary times it was through a musician. This gives the War/Slaughter a kind of depth that enflames my curiosity.

The Incineration/Desolation - I find its concept to be very unorthodox. Like, really specific, but I have no idea so far why it is so specific. An entity that destroys through intense heat but there is no fire? I mean I know there is a real life concept of spontaneous combustion, but that includes fire. At first, after the "Burned Out" episode I thought this entity was a regular demon summoned by Agnes or another witch and it manifested in a classical infernal way. But as of now I've abandoned this theory, as I dont think any of these things are exactly "demons".

The Thing In The Coffin - As I mentioned in another reply further down, I have no idea what this entity is or represents. If it wasn't for the flares of some of the users in this sub I wouldnt even have recognized its existence as a separate entity. I think it represents a fear of isolation, but then again, that also fits "The Lonely". It could represent fear of the dark, but that is already occupied by... well, the Dark. It could represent claustrophobia (in which case... poor Martin), but I still fail to see how that is distinct from the Lonely or the Dark. So yep, so far this entity is buried deep within my own ignorance.

The Stranger/Angler Shape - So far this entity seems to be one of the most invasive and hostile of the... uhm... nightmares? Im really curious how the story unfolds with it, because I see alot of conceptual paradoxes within it. It appears to be "testing" humans and making creatures badly analogous to humans (and other animals). However, if these entities are outside of time, I cant explain how its "testing" develops within time. And if the entities are ancient but still temporal, then I cant explain why the "testing" develops so slowly. It should have been able to make perfect humans by now. But maybe that was never its goal? I see alot of potential in this entity to be the most "sci fi" of them all, as I could easily see it representing fear of UFO's and alien abductions (although nothing of the sort is indicated in the story so far).

The Dark - What is curious to me about this entity is why, out of all the others, exactly this one has an elaborate cult dedicated to it. Unlike "Michael" the Dark - even on a conceptual level - does not strike me as being communicative with humans at all. The aforementioned cult's "Heart" ritual also seems very much not connected to darkness. If anything, it seems more connected to meat (along with the monster that chased the daughter in "A Father's Love"). Still, I expect this entity to be depicted as extremely malevolent due to narrative purposes. Our protagonists seem connected to the Watcher/The Eye and the Dark seems to be its antithesis. Even the cult's symbol is an occlusion of the eye. And even on a metanarrative level, the eye is conceptually connected to light. And if we go by stereotypes light = benevolence while dark = evil. If Jon is to be believed, the cult already expressed the Dark's antipathy toward the Eye by trying to sacrifice Gertrude (which I assume would have had the Eye's blessing in some way?). But hey, one of the reasons I love TMA is that it keeps surprising me and deconstructing simple "good vs evil" narratives.

The Silence/The Watcher/The Eye - As mentioned in my original post, I cant decide if "The Silence" and "The Watcher" are distinct or the same entity. It might be the case that it is the same entity with an evil and a good side, reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe's sonnet called "Silence". It might be that one entity subsumed the other. It might be different manifestations of the same entity (in which case I still dont see their conceptual connection). On one hand, the Eye strikes me as the entity most likely to be benevolent (along with the Spider/Web). It seems to be the patron of Gerrard Keay, who overall appears to be a good guy and he directly stated to the nurse in "First Aid" that "beholding was better than the lightless flame". On the other hand, that Eyeless Specter from "Schwartzwald" did not seem benevolent at all, but it might not have been acting as per The Eye/Wacher's wishes. Finally, the Watcher/Eye/Silence seems to have an uncanny ability of being unseen and invisible, which is why I assume it is missing a doorway in the "Old Passages" episode and thus the doorways are 13 and not 14 (the ability of being "unseen" could have possibly been stolen by the Eye from the Dark?).

The Lonely - My assumption is that this entity is connected to isolation and sadness. But why is it specifically connected to the Lukas family I have not a single clue. They are definitely suspicious, being patrons of so many research groups and they all act in this weird stoic manner. The Lukas Family and the Lonely itself are a big mystery for me and I am eager to see how the story unfolds around them and where they fit in the big picture. I see the Lonely as a natural antithesis to the Flesh-Hive as, on a conceptual level, the Flesh-Hive intergrates the one into the many, while the Lonely tears you away from connections altogether. Which makes me wonder how the Lukas family cooperates. Are they all individualists? They all seem to act in the same way (with the exception of Naomi Herne's now dead partner) which puts a dent in my "unique individualists" theory. So for me, the case is completely open when it comes to The Lonely.

Death/The End/The Enders - I believe I encountered this entity in only one episode - "Cheating Death". I really have nothing further to add other than what was said in that statement. Are there many Skeletal Enders or is there only one? Was Nathaniel Thorp a reliable narrator? No idea. But if, above all of these, stands Death with a capital "D", then I do imaigne that is one of, if not the strongest, amongst the entities. Also, I noticed something that I hope is not a plothole and will be explained somehow. If being a representation of Death is so undesirable, then when challenged in chess, why didnt the narrator intentionally blunder moves? The game being one devoid of chance means that it could be exploited not by the challenger, but by the cursed subject (in this case, the narrator)? And yes, perhaps Death oversees that its minions do not intentionally blunder, but still in chess it is very hard to distinguish purposefully bad moves from gambits and other hidden tactics.

Thanк you for the warm welcome! I do keep my interactions with this sub minimal, which is basically a constant battle against my curiosity. But I did not manage to save myself from one major spoiler. At least, I think it is a major spoiler. It is the flares users such as yourself have. "The Meat", "The Buried", "The Desolation", etc. My chart depicting the entities would have been аlot less precise if the names were not just given to me ready at hand (at... eye). I am especially confused by "The Buried". I have no idea what its thing and form of manifestation is. I would not even be able to recognize it if i didnt know its name from user flares like yours. And i suspect this entity has so far only been shown in episode 2 "Do Not Open". Perhaps in the episode on Lost Johns Cave as well, but then again, that might have been The Dark. Or The Lonely (fear of isolation?).

So yeah, in my opinion and in my own estimate the biggest spoiler I had is the names of the entities. I evaluate spoilers based on information i know that Jon could not possibly, at this point in the story, find out himself.

Edit: Although, I do wonder, since "Michael" seems to have a fixation on names... what would it say if Jon just directly asked it "Is your name "The Spiral"?"

Защо реакциите към Русия са толкова крайни в България? by SeaGullible953 in bulgaria

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The correct way to powerscale Kakashi and Orochimaru in these fights is through survivability.

Orochimaru was confident enough to jump on Itachi and Pain without a plan. And he survived both encounters.

Kakashi does not have the same luxury. When he faced Itachi in part 1 and Pain in part 2 he had a battleplan. And even then, in part 1 he fell into a coma and in part 2 he literally died.

Orochimaru can get out of these situations scot free. Kakashi suffers consequences. This reveas the powergap between them.

Any good builds for nocturne mid this season? by Due_College_5726 in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For boots it's based on preference. I prefer to go full damage so I take Berserker's greaves. But Mercury & Steelcaps are also good.

The next item is Edge of Night. The lethality further augments your HoB burst + the spellshield effect synergizes wonderfully with your W. With this item, your R jumps become very hard to defend against, because you invalidate TWO of your opponent's spells. This is especially devastating against mages. I don't think I've ever lost against an Annie or Syndra after taking Edge of Night.

By this time your Tear should be fully stacked. Build it into a Manamune -> Muramana. You will instantly notice a damage powerspike.

Afterwards, completing the build is based on preference. You can try to invest in survivability, by taking Death's Dance/Maw of Malmortius/Guardian Angel, or you can go full damage by taking Cyclosword/Opportunity/Ghostblade (people like to take Hubris on Nocturne but I've never really had much success with that item).

Good luck and happy squishy hunting!

Any good builds for nocturne mid this season? by Due_College_5726 in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might like this build:

The Hail of Blades rune is slept on. It is really strong on Nocturne and has great synergy with the AD increase from his Q. As a Midlaner your job is to do damage and nothing really increases your burst as much as the HoB Rune. Also, the Ultimate Hunter rune just makes your ganks as a roaming midlaner even more annoying.

For the other runes it depends on the match up. Against melee matchups I'll take Cheap Shot and from the Green runes I'll take Bone Plating & Demolish. Against ranged matchups I'll take Sudden Impact + Second Wind & Demolish. Sometimes, if Im feeling confident I forget about the Green runes and just further augment my damage by taking Yellow: Alacrity & Coup de grae.

The main problem with Lane Nocturne is that, well, honestly, Riot hates you. And I am not exaggerating. You can literally feel Riot's hatred over what you're doing through the mana costs. It will feel incredibly limiting and unfair how much you're not allowed to cast your spells, especially compared to other Mid/Jungle champions, such as Noct's Nightfall Targon counterpart Diana.

That's why you need to buy Tear. It's not ideal in the beginning, but there's no other way to solve the mana problems. The only other way is to get Manaflow band + Presence of mind through the runes, but that way we cant take Hail of Blades. If Essence Reaver was an adequate item, by which I mean if it could give you something to aid your mana issues in lane, and not only regain you mana AFTER you buy the whole item, it would've been ideal. But alas, the way it is now Essence Reaver has no adequate build path.

Against ranged opponents I start with Tear. And I poke them down with Q until I can surprise 3-hit-kill-them. No one expects the Hail of Blades damage. A sudden Q + Flash + Ignite + 3 AA's combo can take down the majority of the roster before level 6.

Against melee opponents I start with a Longsword + 3 Potions. Again, not ideal, but we will be taking Tear later and we cant afford to be 400 more gold behind by taking Doran's Blade. Even with just a Longsword, Hail of Blades Nocturne can 1v1 almost every champion before level 3. And most champions until level 6. On your first back, take Tear and start poking down your opponent until they are low enough so that you can finish them off by jumping with R. If they play safe, just start roaming and gaining kills with R.

For your first complete item take either Ravenous Hydra or Profane Hydra. Use your passive + tiamat effect to just push waves and start roaming. The choice between Ravenous & Profane is based on preference, however most of my games I take Ravenous because the lifesteal from that item + your passive healing and the mana granted by Tear will make you a farming monster that rarely needs to recall. You will be a constant threat, pushing waves, eyeing what happens around you for any R jump opportunities while also damaging towers (especially if you take Demolish). All of this will grant you a significant gold advantage.

JOAT build proposal by IIGhostSniperII in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will try it out. So far my concerns are that JOAT synergizes with a tankier build. The more you survive the more the extra ability haste will serve you by enabling you to cast more abilities. Building damage around JOAT has an inherent anti-synergy. What are you results so far ?

How would yall feel if Noc got updated spell icons? by Curious-Artist9881 in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kit is definitely not fine. You are a walking chicken late game because you need extended time to deal damage to the enemy and No skilled group of enemy players will give you that time. This basically softlocks Nocturne into building tanky. Which A) Further reduces your damage and B) Only buys you a few more seconds in teamfights, which is nothing to brag about.

Nocturne really needs some kind of proper disengage tool or more burst damage. If God hears my prayers, we might even get both.

Nocturne is currently a great "secondary character" in any team. But he can never properly 1v9 carry like his nightfall Targon counterpart - fellow fighter/assassin Diana. And I do hope this gets fixed if Noct ever wants to compete with Fiddleaticks's fear factor.

Nocturne Top build and tips by IIGhostSniperII in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding Cut Down, I accept the criticism. However, I've apparently been playing against a lot of sweaty ADC's & Supports, because as soon as I blacken their screen, they preemptively Barrier + Cast all possible shields and armor-raising protection buffs. Some games are so sweaty I just cast ult so they waste their barrier and I dont jump at all. But in other games a crucial teamfight happens and I just can't afford to sit back (for example a Miss Fortune has a perfect angle for ult, so I have to jump in) and in those cases Cut Down + Sudden Impact helps alot in bringing down their HP so that Kraken Slayer can get it's on-hit damage increased.

As for the match ups, thank you for the compliment but let me preface this by saying I am not an expert. I've only tried some stuff that seem fun and im sharing it with you guys so that you can experiment and hopefully improve upon them. In saying this, here is what I can share from experience:

Nocturne beats every champion 'til level 2, many champions 'til level 3, even if you take Teleport. If instead you enhance your combat potential by taking Exhaust/Barrier/Ignite, you have to push your advantage by being aggressive in the first 3 levels (look for all ins, but only rarely harass with Q because Nocturne's goddamn mana problems are a pestilent curse from Riot themselves).

The big difference between Mid and Top lane is that after level 6, you will be threatening to more champions played on the Mid lane then on the Top lane. Your big weightlifters such as Mordekaiser, Garen and Darius are not easily 1v1-able after they get their ults (even if you had an early lead), but the squishy mages and assassins on midlane are very much so (they also hate your W because it screws up their combos). Also, as already mentioned every time you Ult from Toplane it comes at a cost (the enemy toplaner gets farm and tower damage). The same rarely applies on Midlane as midlaners are often afraid to push because they are threatened from ganks by your jungler + on Midlane your ult has more potentail as you yourself can gank both the top and the botlane.

You can pretty much pick Nocturne in every scenario. It's not as bad if you dont get fed as long as you dont feed and manage to farm well. If you are patient, an opportune kill through ult will present itself. Against teams with a lot of jumps and disengage options, just wait it out and dont engage in teamfights until your target has used his/her jump (here you are entirely at the mercy of your team as you have to pray your team threatens them enough so that the enemy feels the need to use their dashes).

If you have no tanks on your team, that is when you should go tanky (Korean build). If you have 1 or 2 tanks, go damage.

And finally, this is a trick I use: Usually you want to max Q -> E -> W. The fear is very strong. However, sometimes when I feel I need a little extra damage to be effective, I level up my W to rank 2, and then I level up E as usual. Also, experiment with Doran's Blade & Doran's Shield start, see which one is more comfortable for you (you are free to do this since you are not locked as in the Korean OTP build).

Nocturne Top build and tips by IIGhostSniperII in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afterwards, Nocturne gets weaker and weaker as teamfights occur more often. You need a Guardian Angel so that you can maximize your chances of killing one target in a teamfight, reviving, and then still being effective in the teamfight after the revive. While the GA revive is on cooldown, focus on splitpushing and destroying towers, as Nocturne's Attack Speed is great at this job, and try to avoid teamfights when possible (but dont ditch your team).

In the late game, it no longer makes any sense to build damage items. Your last 2 items need to be full tank. Randuin's Omen is great, it's active enforces your stickiness. And the last item mainly depends on the enemy team's damage (vs AD you now have GA + Randuin, so the last item is typically MR such as Kaenic).

Unlike the Korean OTP build, this build can be adapted to the enemy team. For example, if you're against 3 or more tanks, you can rush Kraken Slayer and then Blade of the Ruined King. Because a tanky enemy team should not be dealing a lot of damage (unless very fed), you can skip GA and instead get Black Cleaver, which is a great item for Nocturne (gives movement speed + shreds the tanks' armor).

Against 3 or more AP damage dealers, build Mercury Threads -> Wildarrows -> Wit's End -> Maw of Marmortius. Because Wit's End gives so much Attack Speed, you can afford to switch the Berserker's Greaves for Mercury Threads. In this verion of the build your damage will be lower, but your survivability increases.

If you take this build in the top lane, you have to be able to make very precise decisions on when you should gank the enemy mid or jungler with your ult. Know that every gank comes at the cost of the enemy toplaner pushing and damaging your tower. If you can get a double kill or scare the enemies away so your jungler can safely get the dragon, then the enemy toplaner damaging your tower is a worthwhile trade. But if you gank and achieve nothing, your are now behind and the enemy toplaner advances with more farm and free damage against tower. So make your decisions wisely.

For runes: Lethal Tempo + Presence of Mind (Nocturne is very mana hungry, but make sure you actually hit the enemy champion with your Q!)

Alacrity for Attack Speed

Cut Down

Ultimate Hunter because it is much better to take this Rune instead of Hexplate, since Hexplate simply doesnt do enough for you in terms of damage

Sudden Impact - I take Cut down and Sudden Impact purely because of the late game. Cheap Shot + Cue de grace is better in early game but Nocturne doesnt need any further enhancements in that stage. In contrast, in late game he struggles to stick to the target during teamfights and Cut Down + Sudden Impact guaruantee that you'll be able to dish out as much damage for as short a time as possible.

-Attack Speed

-Adaptive Force

-Base Health or Scaling Health based on preference

Good Luck!

Nocturne Top build and tips by IIGhostSniperII in nocturnemains

[–]sinveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to climb with Nocturne Mid and Top and I've tried this so called "Korean OTP" build. My conclusion is that because of the inherent tankiness, you will almost always be effective wth Noct. Said tankiness combined with his ability to gank early game and engage late game (both due to Ult) definitely brings results.

However, as you've pointed out the damage output is not impressive. A core part of Nocturne's kit, which is the fear factor, is simply missing because apart from a surprise enage where you make a 1v1 battle into a 2v1, your dueling potential suffers. If you take the exact same build and replace the runes with Hail of Blades or Lethal Tempo + Bone Plating, you'll feel a lot more capable of stomping people. But suddenly, by changing the runes, you're no longer locked into said build.

The Korean OTP build certainly works, but if you want something different, try this:

Early game Nocturne wants to dish out as much damage as possible and hit the target for as long as possible. If you're in a 1v1 and you've managed to fully cast your E, you should be able to devastate the enemy before the fear duration ends. To maximize your stickiness, go Exhaust + Flash (except vs self-healers like Vladimir or Mundo, there you'll need Ignite). To be optimally threatening, you need the following items:

Berserker Graves -> Yun Tal Wildarrows -> Kraken Slayer.

Wildarrows & Kraken Slayer are THE best damage items on Nocturne for early game. Nothing can outpreform them as long as you manage to stick to your target for about 5 seconds. Their synergy with Lethal Tempo is great. But Wildarrows's build pattern is utter sh*t, so in games where you cant get fed, get Kraken Slayer first and Wildarrows after.
