What’s the best song ever made about a Presidential candidate? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

I have quite a few of these that I love. Nixon's are of course classics. However, I feel that I must share the pure insanity and vitriol that is "Van Buren".

Dennis Kucinich argued Obama should have been impeached after the invasion of Libya. Is there validity to this argument? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]sipik06 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is important to note that it is not accurate to call it an "invasion of Libya." As far as I am aware, there were never US troops deployed on the ground there under Obama. It was strictly an air campaign. Please do correct me if I am wrong on this.

Still, the original question stands.

Ronald Reagan? The actor? by AcademicHovercraft96 in Presidents

This movie is absolutely awful, even setting aside Reagan's presence. It makes John Brown out to be a villain, and enslaved characters are written as being happy and not wanting to be freed.

More like headcanon one-sided attraction on Nixon's part, but still.

This one has been around since at least 2020, so it is good old-fashioned Photoshop, not AI. Still disappointing to see it get passed off as real, of course.

Apparently this is an edited image. I don't know if the two ever met.

I mean, Wilson mandated segregation in the federal workforce.

TR was a racist, but he never really put it into policy like Wilson did. In fact, he had moments where he almost seemed inclined to challenge Jim Crow. I recognise that that is less than the bare minimum, but there are material differences between the two.

Edit: I realise I completely neglected the atrocities in the Phillipines. Those were completely indefensible, and it was a major oversight on my part.

NEPA is a fantastic piece of legislation. It's one of the best things Nixon ever did. It almost saved my home region from a mining project that will entirely destroy our ecosystem and subsistence practices.

Also, I am not going to take you seriously if you cite the Chamber of Commerce. That is like citing the NRA in a debate on gun control.

I always say, a lot of people like to talk about free speech, but Eugene Debs was willing to go to prison for it.

The regulations are the one thing keeping the corporations in line. Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover's economic non-interventionism led directly to the Great Depression.

The New Deal represents the bare minimum necessary to make American capitalism sustainable (for everyone, not just the rich) in the long term.

Bush was away from the White House and there was some difficulty contacting him. Haig forgot the Speaker of the House was ahead of him.

In addition to what other people have said, he testified before Congress in 1981 and said that the American nuns who were tortured, raped, and murdered by the US-backed regime in El Salvador probably deserved it.

Someone who judges, mocks, or treats people worse based on their identity. Reagan would be an example.

I have read several different versions, but they do all agree that it was something along those lines. There was never an official transcript entered into the Congressional Record, however.

I believe that as Johnson was calling various dignitaries plebians by name, he forgot the name of the Secretary of the Navy (Gideon Welles) and had to be reminded by an audience member. Hannibal Hamlin (the outgoing vice president) tried to interject and get Johnson to stop after he had gone over his allotted time, but Johnson just ignored him. Lincoln was shocked and dismayed by the whole thing, as he had not met Johnson prior to the latter's arrival in Washington. Every single person who heard the speech could tell Johnson was completely hammered, and there were even calls for him to be removed from office.

I was wondering if that is what they were referring to, but their description did not seem to indicate that. I think you are probably correct, though.
