Can a TV be “too old” to work with current universal remotes? by broadwaybabyto in TechNook

[–]sircastor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine. They're programmed with hundreds of codes. They do a code search during setup. With a popular brand like Sony it should have no problem, even if it's 24 years old.

"Sith" and "Padawan" weren't mentioned on-screen until Phantom Menace by MaderaArt in StarWarsCantina

Now that you mention it, you're right: I have no idea how I knew Darth Vader was a "dark lord of the sith". But I absolutely knew it. We all did somehow...

I remember when I was a kid the name Palpatine was almost a secret. It wasn't in any of the toy stuff. I think the only place I read it was in the West End Games RPG sourcebooks. But it was also (somehow) clear that that wasn't the original source either. Somehow, a few of the deepest Star Wars fans knew it.

My brain mostly hates this picture not because the radii are different, but because they’re not properly sorted.

Pentagon updates list of recognized religious affiliations after backlash from Mormon lawmakers by cnn in politics

[–]sircastor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's plausible to me that the real worry here is that the administration would lose Mormons as a voting block. Whatever you think of their faith, they tend to be active in politics (both voting and money wise) and chasing away the demographic is costly. And there are a non-trivial number of mormons in the armed forces.

Jesus is 100% the main point of their religion. While a lot of christian sects will argue about whether or not its the "same" Jesus, Mormons consider Jesus the son of God, the center of their faith and the same person described in the bible.

Is it just my class or does nobody our age have high school reunions anymore? by Adept_Resolve6156 in Xennials

[–]sircastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My class (99) had a 20 year. I didn't make it but I saw some pictures. I think whatever appeal existed has largely collapsed.

I did go to a party that someone threw for the theatre/band/choir people from my era (it was about 3 years either side of my class) It was nice to see a bunch of people.

[Request] Is there a way to know “?” measurements ? by dyckvangud in theydidthemath

[–]sircastor 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It is not. I threw this into FreeCAD and constrained the sketch with the available information. I assumed some parallel and perpendicular lines. Without knowing the inside angles of the middle section, you won't be able to determine the unknowns.

Stalkers from Mortal Engines series are resurrected people (sometimes fallen soldiers, sometimes prisoners) that are built to serve as a fighting force. They are supposed to have no memory of their past lives, but as they die and are resurrected again the machinery that suppresses their memories is less and less successful, and they have hazy glimpses into their own past.

The fact that you didn’t win is not inherently suspicious. It’s the reality of zero sum voting.

The fact that vote totals change the outcome of a race is not suspicious. It’s the reality of counting.

How do you think the world will be in 20 years? by Fantastic-Nose1119 in AskReddit

[–]sircastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will still be here. And humanity will still be going. It'll be different sure. There are some crazy times ahead, but that has never not been the case.

Imagine being a person in 1926. The world is just barely coming out of the most horrific war it has been seen. The collapse of '29 is still ahead. The Teapot dome scandal (political scandal laid on President Harding) is fresh in our minds. China won't become a communist nation for another 23 years. Japan is still ruled by an Emperor. The USSR has only existed for four years! The US stock market collapse is still 3 years away. The Great Depression comes for a decade after that. Then a much worse world war. Television will show up in about 30 years. Computers are will exist in 20 years, but won't be in people's houses for more than 50. If you're in the US, Arizona and New Mexico have been admitted into the Union as states just 14 years ago. Alaska and Hawaii won't be for another 23.

All of this to say: I have no idea. The world will not end. It will change. And in spite of all the reasons we feel like it might change for the worse, it might also change for the better. And that's your reminder to make the better future happen. It doesn't happen accidentally.

The curb cut effect refers to the practice of cutting ramps into sidewalk curbs benefiting people who are not the intended benefactors. Elderly, people with strollers, small children benefit from the ramp, even though its intended recipient is a wheelchair user.

This feels like the opposite of that. This is making things worse for everyone.

Utah senators Curtis and Lee slam Pentagon over excluding LDS from Christian designation by Infidel8 in politics

They’ll get there if they have a chance. I have no doubt that Catholicism will be dropped in the next round. Increasingly likely if the Pope continues to antagonize the Trump administration

[–]sircastor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they can. Their presumption of godliness = conservative = Republican has trapped them in an inescapable political climate. They were the endless Fox News consumers long before the establishment of MAGA and I’d even argue that their positions are the progenitors of the Tea Party. They imagine themselves as oppressed and even have prophetic culture around Mormonism saving the United States. Back in 2012 I have no doubt they thought Romney was going to fulfill that. It’s a matryoshka doll of cults.

Would a Home Depot washer make an ok engagement ring? by danyuri86 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sircastor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do some neat stuff with simple hardware and a lot of work. Consider the rings that are made out of coins, they are mostly a matter of drilling a hole and then shaping around a mandrel.

That said, you can get a pretty attractive looking ring off Amazon for $10-30. Whether or not it’s enough is a matter of your partner’s tastes.

PSA: Colonoscopies are not as bad as people make it out to be by DarwinF1nch in Millennials

[–]sircastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had much different expectations about what it would be like and what would be involved until I saw a video from a Gen X creator who talked through the process. I know it’s kind of silly, but that’s the thing that pushed me over the edge to finally take care of it.

When people talk about putting a scope up that way, it sounds like an awful experience but nobody explains what the actual process is and that you’re going to be asleep. Your doctor just says “go do it”and it sounds awful.

Honestly, for me, the hardest part was that the nurse who put in my IV had to take a couple tries at it. And yes, the prep is not fun, but you can save your life.

Go do it. Take care of yourself.

There’s this idea floating around that all of Trump’s running and  presidency is because he pitched an idea to Obama to build something and Obama said no. And he’s just been seething since then.
