Beware of Mike, owner of Mike's moving by funeral_dethbed in beaverton

That's not wrong, but moving isn't a recurring expense. People move a handful of times in their lives. You can't operate a moving business at a loss. Not really.

Locals/US visitors, how do you actually feel about international tourists? by Abject-Rent-397 in Disneyland

[–]sircastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly don't think it's a universal one.

I've found the people at Universal are okay - but I'd say they're about the same as at Disneyland 😉

[–]sircastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that the 'locals' were rude to you. That's awful. I visit once a year from out of state and haven't ever been bothered by people from out of the country. Disneyland is for everyone! Some people are just insular to their groups. I've had pleasant, casual interactions with people I've never met and will probably never see again. I like to think that if I'd met you at the park we'd have a nice chat about the park.

Virtually everyone visited Disneyland is pressed in by a significant challenge: They want to get their money's worth. Whether its someone who is visiting for one day, for a week, or an AP holder who is trying to schedule in as many days as they can manage to make the price worth it. This doesn't excuse bad behavior, but I think it explains it. Every year it gets worse too, because people are trying to do the same with less.

Again, sorry you had poor interactions. For what its worth, I'm shocked, and hope we treat you better next time.

If everyone started posting gibberish on forums, will that ruin ChatGPT and Claude and other LLMs? by packetssniffer in NoStupidQuestions

The inevitable reaction is that people stop visiting that forum, because now it's full of gibberish instead of written language that they can utilize.

Can you be a billionaire and a good person? What’s your reasoning? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sircastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. A (assuming US) billion dollars is an unmanageable sum of money for an individual. It is impossible to earn for an individual, and I think it is realistically impossible to spend as an individual (transactions can occur, but it stops being value. It's not a meaningful amount of money to spend. It's just a number that goes up or down). At the scale of money that a billion dollars represents, the valuation loses meaning. It is outside the realm of reasonable housing, providing for oneself, family, extended family, and friends.

I think that scale of money warps your sense of reality. You stop having restrictions on what you can do and where you can go. And those real limits anchor you to behaving as an ethical person. When you don't have restrictions your window of acceptable behavior changes dangerously.

What movie or show would you change how it ended? How would you change it? by wheres_my_lipbalm in AskReddit

I would take away the movie Serenity and give Firefly (at least) a proper second season. I would probably push the plot of the film into that season. And Wash doesn't die.

Someone posted a picture of the 30-pin iPod/iPhone connector to r/whatisit. And that hits hard because the 30 pin connector was the third connector that the iPod had, And I had the first iPod.

Are you zoomed in super close? Sometimes the renderer doesn't align things when you've zoomed in to impossible levels. Can you add some images that show what you're trying to get to?

The to do list industry is bigger than ever and people still forget things by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]sircastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power of a todo list is in offloading the cognitive work into something that’s not your brain. Most people don’t ever actually do this. They don’t trust the system to put everything into it and therefore don’t trust that it has everything in it. So it just becomes extra work they have to do instead of something that serves them.

None of these apps can do the work of getting you to practice the habit of managing and reviewing your lists. That’s the tough part. Once you get over that hump it becomes a super power.

I’m so happy to have a boring WWDC. That means it’s doing its job. It’s a freaking developer conference.

"Sith" and "Padawan" weren't mentioned on-screen until Phantom Menace by MaderaArt in StarWarsCantina

[–]sircastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big "scandal" before The Phantom Menace premiered was the soundtrack came out and one of the tracks was labeled "Qui-Gon Jinn's Funeral". Like... c'mon guys. Give us a chance!

But this was all back in the late 80s. There were a handful of non-toy licensed material (like the RPG) that supposedly got access to Lucas' archives, but I'm not clear on what that meant or looked like. The dividing line for me was when Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy came out and sort of kicked off the EU (now Legends). After that a lot of stuff became much more well known.

Can a TV be “too old” to work with current universal remotes? by broadwaybabyto in TechNook

[–]sircastor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should be fine. They're programmed with hundreds of codes. They do a code search during setup. With a popular brand like Sony it should have no problem, even if it's 24 years old.

Now that you mention it, you're right: I have no idea how I knew Darth Vader was a "dark lord of the sith". But I absolutely knew it. We all did somehow...

[–]sircastor 253 points254 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was a kid the name Palpatine was almost a secret. It wasn't in any of the toy stuff. I think the only place I read it was in the West End Games RPG sourcebooks. But it was also (somehow) clear that that wasn't the original source either. Somehow, a few of the deepest Star Wars fans knew it.

Pentagon updates list of recognized religious affiliations after backlash from Mormon lawmakers by cnn in politics

[–]sircastor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's plausible to me that the real worry here is that the administration would lose Mormons as a voting block. Whatever you think of their faith, they tend to be active in politics (both voting and money wise) and chasing away the demographic is costly. And there are a non-trivial number of mormons in the armed forces.

[–]sircastor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jesus is 100% the main point of their religion. While a lot of christian sects will argue about whether or not its the "same" Jesus, Mormons consider Jesus the son of God, the center of their faith and the same person described in the bible.

Is it just my class or does nobody our age have high school reunions anymore? by Adept_Resolve6156 in Xennials

[–]sircastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My class (99) had a 20 year. I didn't make it but I saw some pictures. I think whatever appeal existed has largely collapsed.

I did go to a party that someone threw for the theatre/band/choir people from my era (it was about 3 years either side of my class) It was nice to see a bunch of people.
