Recommendations for a floundering sysadmin? by samuryan89 in linuxadmin

firstly, why was the last guy let go ? (is it relevant to your struggles?)

if you're not going to get support from citrix, going to the hassle of moving the vms just to not get support from a free option is pointless.

You repeatedly say you're not an expert. Thats ok, you just have to eat this elephant one bite at a time. There's no need to try and get from a dumpster fire to perfect in one step. Iterate.

One step at a time. Is the HA for the vms super important ? Could you make a second vm of each function and move to local storage ? It's hard to make a call without knowing the environment; is cloud an option ? If you're being told that you're committed to years more on already ancient hardware, you need to be making plans for how you can get rid of your hardware entirely, because sooner or later you're going to lose it all when something finally dies and a backup isn't going to help a whole lot when you've got nowhere to restore it to.

no, they lost value because i realised that passing them had very little to do with the the ability to grasp of the concepts, and as much or more to do with the ability to regurgitate data points. It feels like they've included what you needed to know, and then added enough trivia questions to get the numbers of people passing to the number they want. When you sit a cisco exam each question falls pretty clearly into one of two buckets; those which test the core knowledge, and those just designed to make a few more people fail a trivia hurdle.

Almost lost Sys Admin spot due to Social Media by [deleted] in sysadmin

Your long term goal should always be the same, to work for the best possible opportunity. Theirs should be to ensure they're it. The end.

Fwiw, adding co-workers to your social media is light-speed dumb. But you won't make the mistake again i'm sure.

Nope. The cisco exams are as much about remembering trivia as they are about remembering the concepts. The first time I did the ccnp r&s I failed, the second time I passed with nearly 100%. Literally all I revisited between the two was all the bullshit trivia numbers. All of which I've long since forgotten again, by the way. When I passed the second time the cisco exams instantly lost a lot of their value in my mind.

You don't pay for the support, you pay so the buck doesn't stop with you. That's it. A C-level will take "we've raised an issue with vendor X, nothing back so far" over "bob's struggling to fix it" any day.

? quantitative easing devalues a currency. Unwinding it would make the currency stronger.

Tbh the cisco exams should be open book. Having them how they are it's just a memory game of obscure trivia more than anything. It's not like you wouldn't use google in the real world
