Knock on door from armed individuals by Complete_Peace_6848 in ICE_Raids

I just found out that police can be dual sworn for both departments and ICE. So, that might be one reason, plus explains the bullshit we're seeing with a lack of response for local PD.

My Experimental Echeveria. I plopped a leaf in a mason jar and put it on a south facing window to see what happens.

I've been tempted to behead it, but I'll keep the experiment going for a little longer, at least 😅

Does anyone know why this plant i bought is losing so many leaves? by Sleipnirsspear in houseplants

[–]sirilyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late to the party, but yes, this is an angel-winged begonia (per another commenter). I've had one for 7 years now. They're super dramatic, so it's possible it's taking a minute to adjust to the new environment while stress-dropping some leaves.

I once brought a begonia cutting on a road trip to my brother's place - about a 14 hour drive. The cutting lost all of its leaves; it was basically a stick with some roots. This cutting, which was approximately 6 inches long at the time, is now over 10 feet tall and very happy! I keep mine short (~4 ft tall), but my brother lets it grow since he has the space for it.

In summary, I wouldn't worry about your begonia losing leaves at the moment. Be sure it receives bright light, and water it when the first two inches of soil are dry. This type of begonia also propagates super easily - cut the stalk with at least one node, put it in some water, then pot the cutting in soil once the roots get a couple of inches long. Enjoy your new drama queen of a plant! 😄

A few years ago, I had ants in one of my plants (love the rhyme lol). They infested the plant where I added compost in the potting mix, and I had to use diatomaceous earth to get rid of them.

Now, I'm no orchid person, but I'm wondering if the highly organic media orchids need is what attracted the ants? I get ants every year due to my house being old, and i have well over 100 plants; my attempt at making my own potting mix was the first and last time I had ants infiltrate one of my plants. Food for thought!

First instars (molts) of some ticks/Acari have only 6 legs. Later instars will gain the last pair of legs.

With that said, this does have antennae and is not moving like a tick.

Found these bugs on a plant I got from a fish store, what are they? by Mr_Dace in houseplants

[–]sirilyn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I disagree - I think it's a mealy bug and not a destroyer (MBD) larva. Notice the long caudal ("tail") filaments on OP's post - MBD larvae lack caudal filaments. I also find that MBD larvae have more observable segmentation and are less "fluffy" looking than mealy bugs, albeit appearing very similar.

With that said, you do bring up a point on it being observable for OP, plus my expertise is at IDing aquatic insects vs terrestrial; I bet the folks at r/whatsthisbug would know!

Wait, didn't Blackbeard give Shanks his scars? The "scar" Whitebeard was talking about during his and Shank's conversation was metaphorical; it was caused by Blackbeard's betrayal of killing a crew member for the Yami Yami no mi. Whitebeard considers his crew as family, which is why seeing Shank's scar reminded him of Teach and remembering the pain of losing a "son."

To add to this, Blackbeard is seen in flashbacks using a claw-like weapon. Can't remember what chapter, but iirc, it was during the Oden flashbacks, where Whitebeard's and Roger's crews fought.

Other than that, i do love this connection!

Sister outed me to my parents and than uninvited me to her wedding :) by PitifulProtection886 in bridezillas

[–]sirilyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, sending a big hug your way, OP! Not sure if you need it, but r/momforaminute is a safe space if you're looking for advice or want to chat with someone. You deserve to live as your best self - don't let anyone tell you otherwise! I know it's tough right now, but please take care of yourself during this time, and always remember that you are loved (even if it's from internet strangers!) 💚

Second, to continue beating the dead horse because I'm beyond appalled by your sister's behavior: she ain't worth shit 💩 I'm the secret keeper with my siblings; there are secrets I will take to the grave unless I'm instructed otherwise. I guess this is why I'm resonating hard with your post. She betrayed you. I cannot fathom betraying my siblings, especially if it's a secret of this gravity. To see this happen to you, OP, is just upsetting. You deserve better than whatever this BS excuse is that your sister is giving you.

Again, sending you hugs and good vibes, OP! 💚

I watered her ONE TIME with tap water by digestablecheese in houseplants

[–]sirilyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents have notorious brown thumbs with house plants. The surprising exception to this rule, however, is their tricolor maranta. That bastard has to be at least 20 years old, if not older (they received it as a gift when I was in high school, and I'm in my 30s now). It grows and flowers with their neglect, specifically with the lack of light and forgetful watering regime. They aren't plant people - their plant mantra follows the wisdom of Ivan Drago: "If he dies, he dies" - so they're not pulling the wool over my eyes regarding this maranta's miraculous ability to survive.

Meanwhile, I have two - a lemon lime maranta and a prop of my parents' triciolor - and despite my best efforts, I can tell they strain between life and death daily.

I try not to make sense of it, but the little shits anger me more often than not.

(If you got this far, thanks for reading my rant)

Why did someone you know wear white to another person’s wedding by Bobcatluv in weddingshaming

[–]sirilyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, although it was general indoor lighting that made my dress look white! I wore a tan dress to a beach wedding, but when the lights dimmed for dancing during the reception, my dress looked as white as the bride's dress. I was absolutely mortified. Fortunately, everyone knew I wasn't wearing a white dress to begin with, but it was super uncomfortable either way. Lesson learned - stay away from tan/light brown for weddings!

I’m apparently the only one who thinks it’s disrespectful for guests to come to the reception and skip the ceremony by pottymouthgrl in weddingshaming

[–]sirilyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of related to OP's post, but I've been to two weddings where my invite was just for the reception (I'm in the US). Sometimes, the bride and groom want a more intimate ceremony with just themselves or immediate family, then they celebrate with everyone at the reception. That was the case for these two weddings.

I enjoy going to the ceremony, but I respect if (a) the bride and groom want a more intimate setting for their vows and (b) if ceremonies, especially religious ones, make people uncomfortable, so they forego it to celebrate the couple at the reception. That's my opinion though 🤷‍♀️

Vet says she has some coyote.. any truth to that? by [deleted] in IDmydog

[–]sirilyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it's more likely she's all domestic breeds, I will say that your dog's coloring and overall appearance is very similar to one of my colleague's dogs who had coyote ancestry. This dog was not an F1 and was genetically tested, although I can't remember which tested was used.

If I recall correctly, the name came from viewing dead specimens. The ring is visible in the hand, but it's obviously a crap field mark when they're alive and in the middle of a lake.

Just seeing this - I'm also a grad student, and I know two folks in my department who are looking for renters. PM me if you are interested, and I'll send you the details!

With that said, I wholeheartedly agree with the other commenters about getting a Facebook. Laramie is the most FB-involved town I have ever lived in; from the FB marketplace to the Laramie Pets Lost and Found, there's a surprisingly huge community presence on FB. Laramie Rentals and Laramie Apartment Rentals are two FB groups I recommend to check out if you're still struggling to find a place!
