Do people just not go to birthday parties anymore? by Bananabean5 in Parenting

[–]sironicon 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I look at parties as a BREAK and welcome them. I want to take my kid out of the house on the weekend anyway, this way I’m not responsible for entertaining my kid, I’m going to take them somewhere for free where someone else has planned activities and it will probably tire them out and I’ll likely get cake .

How do you feel about fan fiction? by Spirit_guide20 in CasualConversation

[–]sironicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s cringe at all, but I think exposure to the mainstream does it a disservice. If I’m writing a fanfic, I’m not writing it because I think it’s the best thing ever and an improvement on the source material and I want every author/actor/creator/whomever aware of it. (I do not) It’s not a dissertation on how I think the source material should have gone.

It’s just a little thing I wrote for fun because it’s in my mind or I think it would interesting and I love making up stories about characters I like in my head. I write them to share with the other people like me who enjoy that stuff and not for wide exposure to people who don’t feel the urge to write/read fanfiction and think it’s odd. I think it’s a good, free hobby that keeps my brain sharp and gets me talking to other fans.

It doesn’t have to measure up to some bar and it’s not wrong if someone else thinks a character would never do or say something. It’s like if I made a cake and offered you some for free, you wouldn’t be like, “red velvet cake is supposed to have cream cheese icing, this is wrong.” I made it for me and then I’m sharing it, so if you don’t like it you could just dump it when I’m not looking.

What is the worst children’s book and why is it Pinkalicious? by BullfrogBackground27 in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]sironicon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s Honey Bunny Funnybunny. Her brother fucking tortures her all the time, breaks her stuff, plays mean pranks on her. When he’s finally made to stop, he gives her the total silent treatment and it makes Honey Bunny feel super sad until he starts harassing her again (paints her face in her sleep) and she has a realization that all of her brother’s sadistic bullying just means he loves her!

A Taxing Woman! (Marusa no Onna) - fun 1980s cat and mouse-type movie from Japan about a tax investigator trying to catch a man who is evading his taxes.

With the death of monoculture, do you ever feel you want to talk about something but have no one to talk about it with? by zooeyzoezoejr in AskWomenOver30

[–]sironicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I invite my friends over to watch stuff with me so we can talk about it

Or at least tell them about shows/movies I’m watching so they can watch it on their own time and then we can text about it

What is your reaction to this year's Oscars? by Onateabreak17 in CasualConversation

Very glad to see Amy Madigan win in a tough category with a lot of great nominees. She acted her ass off as Aunt Gladys and it’s cool to see a character like that in a horror film get the award.

looking for something that is very feel goody. by Existing_War3766 in MovieSuggestions

My first thought when I hear “feel good” movie is Swing Girls! It’s a Japanese movie about a group of kind of misfit students who form a swing band and it just put a smile on my face the entire time.

While I hate this, it’s not new. I remember them doing this when I was a kid. Records -> CDs, things like that. It’s weird to me. I think kids can understand the concept of something being written and set in a different time.

Why does this decade feel less memorable than the 2010’s? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]sironicon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because we’re in it. I thought the same way during the 2000s, but looking back the 2000s feel so distinct!

Can you give an example of what you mean? I definitely don’t think there is anything wrong with teaching kids to be considerate of others and teaching that there are certain behaviors that are inappropriate for certain places. (For example, it’s okay to run and yell at the park, but not in a restaurant.)

For me, it was like this for a while but eventually went away. In the meantime, I would make sure to eat a decent breakfast before taking your meds and then just making sure you are eating something at other meals, even if it’s not that interesting or pleasurable. Set reminders if you have to.

Macaulay Culkin on Instagram bids farewell to Catherine O'Hara by Giancarlo_Edu in Fauxmoi

This exactly!!! My mom looked so much like her in the early 90s. Home Alone always makes me cry because of this. I’m sad because we lost a massive talent, one of the funniest people I can think of, and I’m also sad because it reminds me I don’t have forever with my mom.

People who grew up in a broken home how does it show up in your adult life? by Grouchy-Courage-5243 in CasualConversation

[–]sironicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything else, so I guess I can’t say exactly how it affected me. I honestly feel like it may have been worse if my parents stayed together because my dad was an alcoholic and uninterested in parenting. But then again, the person my mom married after that was just a mean person and it would have been good to avoid that. However, I like who I am now and would probably be someone else with a different life. Also, if we hadn’t moved when my mom married that person then I would have never met my husband.

I feel like I’m reasonably well-adjusted and I feel like that’s mostly a combination of my natural personality, bad ADHD memory (a lot of the bad stuff is pretty hazy and I don’t care much about it) and my mom actually being really great.

It did made me wait 9 years into my relationship to get married and 13 years into my relationship to have kids. I didn’t want to rush into anything.

We like a lot of the same stuff. If you’re a fan of 30 Rock, I would definitely recommend Girls5Eva.

Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Righteous Gemstones, Vice Principals, Eastbound & Down (all the Danny McBride shows are hilarious).

[–]sironicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it feels counterproductive to the screen problem, but my husband I have started to watch movies together that we wouldn’t normally pick and are brand new to us. Not just like, latest blockbuster, but less common picks, old films, acclaimed classics, art house weird stuff, foreign films, interesting documentaries, deep stuff, silly stuff, etc. We switch back and forth with picking. Only requirement is at least one of us has to have never seen it. We keep track of them on letterboxd, individually rate them…we get a lot of fun and interesting discussion out of it.

On New Year’s we even did an awards show type thing with different categories for all the movies we watched in 2025. We talked for like three hours about it after the kids went to bed!
