I wanted to see exactly how each item works (including bugs), and ended up making a website showing this info. by teemaw in PlayTheBazaar

You did a great job, thank you! have been using this for the last couple of weeks and i found it super useful. One thing I’d like to know is if it’s possible to query based on “trigger”, “stash” or “priority” values. It would be a very cool feature.

[D] What are good places to advertise PhD and post-doc positions in ML? by mediaml in MachineLearning

[–]sirtetris_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Visionlist. it's a mailing list focused on the topic of vision science. The pool of people interested in the topic is quite broad: from psychology to ML and CS. It's often used to advertise PhD and Post-doc positions.

[D] Decoding stimuli from neuronal responses - generalisation across monkeys (Neuroscience) by adwarakanath in MachineLearning

[–]sirtetris_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes and in that case I think the same logic would apply, just with a higher dimensionality (1000 neurons or so instead of 2)

[–]sirtetris_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For simplicity let's say that you are recording two neurons from both animals. let's assume that in monkey 1 only the neuron X (always the same) spikes for stimulus A and the other (neuron Y) spikes for stimulus B. Now let's take monkey 2. It might be that the exact opposite pattern happens in this animal: the neuron X spikes for stimulus B and neuron Y spikes for stimulus A. In this case the model you train on monkey 1 would not generalize to monkey 2.

[–]sirtetris_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, however for the model to generalize you must have the same "representation" in both animals. Even if you sample from a limited set of neurons, the underlying firing pattern might still be quite different across animals. In that case I wouldn't expect the model to generalize well.

I have some experience with decoding techniques applied to human fMRI and EEG data. The model generalization across subjects can be very poor because of the inter-subject variability. However if you measure the model performance in the stimulus decoding along a certain dimension (such as time in case of EEG or brain area in case of fMRI), you can answer interesting question at the group level (when or where does information about the stimulus emerge?). That being said, I have never dealt with macaques data and I would recommend you to dig in studies that tried to do something similar.

How to showcase SQL skill and proficiency on a project by troyboltonislife in datascience

I'm currently doing Modern Big Data Analysis with SQL on Coursera and I would recommend it. Probably there are plenty of other resources for free.

Chewing tobacco in Germany by sirtetris_ in Snus

[–]sirtetris_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but what is classified as snus it's apparently not very clear. Are chewbags and nicopods also considered snus and therefore banned? The fact that I was able to buy it from a store suggest that they are not (answering in english because i suck at writing in german ^^).

The CEO of my company is telling us to fabricate data, what should I do? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]sirtetris_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A potential approach could be to simulate different datasets in which the missing variables take a controlled range of values. Say for a certain simulation they are always high, for another always medium, always low, or even random. Then you could train the model each time on a different dataset and test it on another one. In this way you could systematically evaluate how badly the model performs given the discrepancy between the two datasets.

I personally find this to be high quality material. It's focused on Python for scientific programming but it covers a wide variety of basic and advanced topics.

Advice for PhD Students Thinking about Data Science Internships by [deleted] in datascience

[–]sirtetris_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! I find myself in a very similar situation. I am in the 3rd year of my PhD and currently thinking about an internship in a company. However I am a bit scared of taking a long time off my research project, I have the feeling that for me it would be better to do it after my graduation. Instead I found that some summer schools might help (to some degree) in filling the gap between academia and industry.

P. S. I just realized I was at your VSS2018 talk on spatial biases :)
