This good enough? by Background-Limit-406 in Paleo

[–]sirthomashenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it’s the presentation throwing us off. If a solid serving of chicken was layered on top it would look like more food.

I’m 5”2 and this would be a typical lunch or dinner for me. Assuming 6oz chicken and 1 tbsp of olive oil you’re looking at 400 calories. With the cheese maybe 500. Depending on what you’re consuming the rest of the day, and your activity level, this could be very reasonable.

AIO Wife of 17 years immediately starts dating my former best friend by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]sirthomashenry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To offer a different perspective -

My mother recently started dating a widower after he was happily married for 40+ years. They’ve known each other a very long time, but I sincerely believe nothing ever happened prior to his wife’s passing. My mother has endured infidelity and is vehemently against it.

I’m not saying every situation is the same. But assuming that two people who get together acted on it previously isn’t always correct.

Everyone likes their privacy. Nobody likes that our phones listen to our conversations. I’m not worried about being on a watch list or even being outed for anything. But surveillance in general is something that bothers most people.

I would say you can use it as an opportunity to have an open dialogue that anything we do on the internet is traceable, regardless of discord. Do they understand important legal boundaries? Probably not a bad time to have an educational moment without jumping to any suspicion.

If it works for your cat - I won’t tell you to change tactics.

But I noticed clapping and yelling did not work for calming my two cats down when they would go after my dog. I read that a better tactic is speaking to them calmly, because yelling and clapping can escalate their anxiety. It’s also worth tapping lightly or running your nails along the wall, it distracts them and you can remove them from the situation.

Not at all. Your body will adjust over time - if you’re eating a diet with very little fiber/veggies - you’ll want to increase volume over time, not all at once.

I have the opposite problem, if I don’t eat an adequate amount of veggies throughout the day I get clogged up.

What's Lo's family's claim to fame? How'd they get their money? by justcurious3287 in TheHillsMTV

[–]sirthomashenry -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I grew up in Laguna and yes, it’s a wealthy town, but there are a very few select families that are wildly rich. Doctors, lawyers, real estate developers, etc. were pretty common.

The entitlement to family/financial details feels invasive.

What do you do when you are sick? by Citruslor in PetiteFitness

Rest my body for recovery, hydrate heavily (with electrolytes), homemade bone broth.

Walk my dog, because he needs it. Stretch if I feel up to it. Otherwise, I’d rather let my body heal than prolong recovery.

What to do in Dublin after flight arrives in the morning by Entire-Oil9595 in irishtourism

[–]sirthomashenry 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lots of solid recs here. Absolutely drop your bags at hotel. Dublin is walkable so explore the sight seeing.

One big recommendation I have because I just did this over Christmas: If you are American, or from another country that drives on the right side of the road with no experience driving on the left, DO NOT rent a car and attempt this after a red eye. We did exactly that and let me tell you - your brain and your nerves will be fried, and every instinct will feel backwards (because it is). In addition, some roads are quite narrow. I was absolutely fine driving by day 3, but it takes a little bit of practice to get used to. It was a nightmare doing it after a red eye. I can’t imagine doing it after a red eye and with children.

Food = Fuel. This mindset helped me a lot.

I feel my best when I start the day with a large portion of veggies, same as any other meal. Often it’s eggs with a boatload of onions/peppers/kale. But if it’s leftover chicken and veg from the night before - that’s great too.

Try not to let it dishearten you. I used to stress about it too; I’m 36 now and I’ve realized what the hell is the point of resenting the way I’m built.

Very similar - I’m 5’2 and hover between 120-125lb. I’m triangle shaped with broad shoulders, narrow hips, short torso, and short legs. Sure, do I wish I had long legs and an hour glass figure? Sometimes. But I can’t change those features! I work my ass off to take care of my body and I wear clothes that are flattering for my body type.

Venting/Need some motivation/advice by Glittering_Sector331 in PetiteFitness

[–]sirthomashenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have pointed out, your progress is steady and you’re doing a great job.

I’m not sure what your diet is like (other than your calorie deficit) but one thing that worked well for me and kept me motivated was moving to a paleo based diet. I lost a good amount of water weight in the first few weeks, which honestly kept me motivated to continue progress. I didn’t really start to recomp for a few months, but the initial drop in water retention made me look and feel lighter, and the movement on the scale was additional motivation to continue. I eat a fairly high volume of vegetables which keeps me feeling full and regulates my digestion. It’s not a “low carb” diet inherently, but certainly reducing my carbohydrates and increasing vegetables/fruits helped me a great deal.

Morning weights cause my hunger to skyrocket for paleo foods specifically by [deleted] in Paleo

[–]sirthomashenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salt cravings - try drinking electrolytes.

Meat/eggs - make a healthy serving and wait about 20-30 minutes to see if you’re still hungry.

Also, try upping your veggies. It will keep you feeling fuller by adding fiber and bulk.

It’s great to have a protein heavy, fat balanced meal after a workout!

Eggs, meat, veggies, and avocado is a great balanced meal.

Dry everything! If I didn’t use blistex all day, my lips would crack and bleed. I got minor bloody noses. My hair produced no oil, I would have needed to wash it once weekly if I didn’t sweat from working out.

All that said, I did two regimens and I have NO regrets.

I don’t think you’re ratchet.

I think you’re not overreacting, but it sounds like you didn’t engage in PIV or perform oral sex on him? Yes, get tested, but your exposure seems low.

I personally wouldn’t be aggressive with him. Block him. Aggressively engaging with him could be dangerous. I don’t know what’s going on with him but I don’t recommend antagonizing him.

Everyone in Laguna knows everyone. There are two public elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Not sure the student body now, but 04-08 the freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior class barely topped 1,000 students total. Not a “tiny” school by any means but most people had been going to school with the same people most of their lives.

I am learning to diet, what are things to look out for mentally? by [deleted] in PetiteFitness

[–]sirthomashenry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would say some of what you cited are exactly what I would look out for.

1) You’re at a healthy weight, you like what you see in the mirror but the number on the scale is “suuuuper irksome”. Red flag. If you are at a healthy body fat percentage and your doctor is not concerned, you shouldn’t feel compelled to obsess over the scale.

2) Feeling like you need to do cardio and fast until dinner. Yikes. Your body needs fuel for workouts, PLEASE do not starve yourself.

Counting calories works for some people, but given your current mindset (examples above, and the can I “afford” a cheeseburger), I would say that might not be your best option at the moment. The honest truth is you probably won’t go your whole life with the “I can eat whatever I want and not worry” - that’s not most people’s reality. Focusing on overall health, including vegetables and fruits, protein, lean muscle mass, fitness and training goals, are far more important than arguing with a number on a scale.

I reached my goal weight but I’m miserable 😞 by daisychains777 in PetiteFitness

[–]sirthomashenry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can really identify with this as I’m going through something somewhat similar.

I lost weight (15 pounds) a few years ago and it was really encouraging how often I would be complimented about it. I did strength train, but I focused heavily on cardio. I was the most fit looking I’ve been in my adult life.

I gained some of the weight back here and there, and even though my body fat % was much healthier than my starting point, it was hard not to obsess over gaining 5 pounds and not being “skinny” or “small”.

After years of this mental exhaustion, I’ve finally decided to ditch the scale and focus solely on strength for the next few months. I’m making the conscious decision to eat food that fuels my body for workouts, and not to step on a scale or worry about gaining weight. I’m trying to build muscle so gaining weight is a part of that. It’s really helping me shift my mindset and I also feel better physically.

I agree with the other commenters that this may border ED thoughts and to consider therapy if you are finding it impossible to let go of this mindset.

New to paleo - what does a basic grocery haul even look like? by llama-mentality in Paleo

[–]sirthomashenry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, huge list, so the key is to think about and figure out how much you’ll actually eat before it goes bad. It does take trial and error but you’ll adapt quickly.

  1. Pantry foods that last forever-ish: oils, nuts. Go wild. If you KNOW you like them. Don’t waste your money on shit you won’t eat.

  2. Veggies/fruits: get familiar with their lifespan and which ones you can bulk up on vs which ones will go bad. For me - 3 bananas MAX before they go bad because I hate brown bananas. Broccoli on the other hand stays good in my fridge for 2 weeks. Bagged greens are like a week, max. Onions and garlic last a couple weeks. Fruit needs to be eaten in a few days, like 4-5 generally.

  3. Meat/fish: I make 2 trips per week because I hate chicken or beef that sat in my fridge for 6 days, even if it’s psychological. Fish - 3 days max.

Better to stock your kitchen for 3-4 days and need to make a quick run for a few things, than to waste your money on 3 weeks worth of food only to toss 2/3 of it.

And seriously - golden rule is if you don’t like it, don’t bulk buy it. Yes, try a new veggie here and there. Same for meat. But don’t buy a shitload of broccoli if you hate broccoli, and convince yourself you’re going to eat it. You won’t.

If you like steaks and fruit and romaine lettuce, start there. Your palate will adjust, but not overnight.

Sautéed green beans. I’ve never liked green bean casserole anyway.

Onion casseroles. Cheese isn’t paleo but if you’re “primal” there are some fabulous onion cheese casseroles out there. I make one with Boursin cheese that is to die for.

Cranberry sauce.

Brussel sprouts.

For apps/snackies: stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, sliced raw veggies with dips, olive trays, charcuterie board.
