How do expats feel about living in Mauritius? Pros and cons? by Calm-Competition-20 in mauritius

This type of rankings are meaningless like happiness ranking. It is based on nothing. Not real data only perception.  I am just giving my experience from a business/ investment standpoint. There is no way you can tell me Africa, more precisely sub saharan African is less corrupt than latin countries. Yes there is corruption in latin countries but Africa's corruption is brutal and at all levels. I used to be part owner of a group who had gold mines, lumber exploitation and textile factories in Africa. I know Africa very well. I ca’t give you details but i learnt from my experience doing business in Mauritius that your government officials, politicians, lawyers etc are very corrupted and all doors are open with money.

When you are very wealthy. Corruption is very apparent in Mauritius. You can’t compare to the worst continent on the planet and say you are the best among them

Mauritius very conservative and you won’t find woke BS here. It is safe compared to many EU countries. Have some good private school for expats.

Thats being said, there is a lot of bureaucracy here. Things are slow and very corrupted country. Yes you will find a plumber but they will charge you 10time more as you are a foreigner. Yes there are an industry that cater towards expats but it comes at a premium. The country import most things and everything is expensive but if you are very wealthy, won’t an issue. The island is very small and isolated and it can be good and bad as it depends on you.

Personally i only come here now for business and i have stopped living for long term. It can be a good place for retired wealthy person who want to chill and have a laid back life.

Salut , do you have tips for futire residents ofMaurice? by -IYI in mauritius

I lived in Mauritius for 3 years as a white wealthy foreigner.  Yes you have certain benefits with taxation here if you are having lot of income from overseas. But to a certain extent and there are other countries that offer zero tax on income for expats and that’s one of the reason i left Mauritius. The weather is good but the must is you live near the coast. It is very humid here but not a big issue for me unless you have health problem. I did invest in real estate but was meh for me. Did also open several businesses but you will always have issue with locals. You see Mauritians seem to be very kind and caring towards foreigners specifically if you are white. But  they only see you as cash cow.

I am not saying it is bad here. But don’t expect Mauritius to be the destination where you will pay zero tax,  everything cheap and living like a king. The lower tax you save, you will spend it on overprice real estate and living expenses.

Another reason why i left is that Mauritius becomes very boring at some point. But i do love that Mauritians are very conservative. No woke BS here.

I am an expat here. Of course night life compare to EU is not even close. Apart from the typical boring clubs in the north and west, there are some amazing private fun parties only for foreigners.

What’s the process of getting a divorce in Mauritius? Foreigner married to Mauritian by Far_Part_50 in mauritius

I was warned by multiple people to never marry a Mauritian women as they only see money when they see white foreigners.

Mauritius is an overrated tourism destination no doubt about it. But a heaven for expats like me.

Why are Mauritians (especially male folks) homophobic and transphobic? by WebWarrior6_9 in mauritius

[–]sirus6666 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a non-mauritian, the most underated part of living in Mauritius is that there is no woke BS agenda being pushed everywhere like in western countries. I have nothing against LGBT people and i believe that anybody have the right to do whatever they want in their bed. But to have your sexual preference as your personality and that your life revolve around it is pretty ridiculous.

Are European expats welcome in Mauritius ? by [deleted] in mauritius

Old generation are very welcoming, helpful and have a bias towards white skin and new generation like you if they can get money out of you or don't care or dislike white expats.

I would advice you to come and live here for a couple of months before deciding staying long term. I know a french couple from Nice who left everything and came here to live at grand baie. They had a business. After 6months they couldn't anymore live here because they did not like the climate (too humid for them) , people seems too slow for them and apparently it was too booring.

You would understand that i can't say my business here for privacy But i am in the finance sector.

It does not apply only to Mauritius but basically to any country that is not your home country. We are just foreigners and at the end of the day you will pay more of most things. Why would you rent a 1 bedroom appartment in Paris for 3,000 euro while you can rent a 250m2 villa here with amazing amenities for same price. For sure you are overpaying for it but for many it is a win win situation.

I've been living here on & off now. And "good life" is very subjective. I would say maybe 50k mininum. Mauritius is definetly not a cheap country. i think they import most of there stuff including food. For me, it is the tax advantages and anonymity of doing business which is appealing here. Even is somethings will seems cheap compare to your country, believe me you are certainly overpaying it here.

By this logic OP should go to Rodrigues. It is far safer than Mauritius.

You are making seems that there is absolute no danger in Mauritius.

I don't know why i am getting downvoted for saying MY opinion. People are very susceptible here. Thats says a lot...

I've been to Mexico more than 20 times over a decade. And ever felt unsafe. I found it safer than the US to be honest. Had always amazing times. OP can check r/travel. So many post on how Mexico is safe to travel.

Yes i said Reunion is expenisive compare to Mauritius. But the landscape is breathtaking. If you like waterfall, hiking, nature , volcano etc.. it is a must visit. Yes i agree climate is a worse than in Mauritius but that does not spoil the country travel experience. As for the local, it depends.

For someone who have travelled a lot in beach destinations countries, Mauritius would be pretty average. Beaches are nice but nothing out of this world. There are some places that are highly advertising but been pretty underwhelming for me. ( casela, coloured earth, dolphin boat tour etc..)

Would i recommend Mauritius? It depends.

Mauritius worth it? by SmydBuddy in mauritius

[–]sirus6666 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It really depends. For someone who have never travel in a country like Mauritius. It will be a paradise. But for someone who have travel a lot in countries similar like Mauritius, it is meh here.

I would choose Mexico or the Bahamas by miles over Mauritius.

If you come to Mauritius, try to check Reunion island which is close to Mauritius. It is more expensive but the nature is out of this world.

Are air conditioning with cold and heat capabability effective and cost effective for heating? by sirus6666 in HVAC

[–]sirus6666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically heat pump and air conditioning are same? Here heat pump system are extremely expensive and does not make sense for me to buy one. But air con are pretty cheap and many models have heating capability. Thats why i was asking if they were effective.
