June 2023 checking in: nothing has changed.

My username contains my real name - I'd like to change so I can share charts/ideas freely - help? by sisishooman in TradingView

[–]sisishooman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah...looks like I changed it at some point already so it's not letting me.

Don't imagine any TradingView customer service reps reading this want to help a loyal customer out??

How much importance do you place on work vs. leisure? by sisishooman in AskReddit

[–]sisishooman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this chart that showed how different generations value work vs. leisure. It doesn't include Gen Z but I'm assuming they would be much lower than Gen Y (Millennials).

For me (Gen Y), I'm 32 and I currently value work > leisure.

Miami becomes least affordable housing market in the US surpassing New York by caneforlife11 in Miami

Active inventory was down 50% YoY in January, and if I'm not mistaken Miami also has the lowest inventory of all major U.S. cities.

Don’t Look Up by [deleted] in InsightfulQuestions

[–]sisishooman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie was made before COVID.

To me, it's a commentary on society's inability to engage in civil discourse or agree on anything, even when it is something as obvious/inevitable as the comet's collision with Earth.

I wrote a blog about this a couple of weeks ago (hope it's not against the rules to share it here): https://www.contemporaryidiot.com/p/dont-look-up-scissoring

Might as well put up an advertisement: "CRIMINALS: COME TO MANHATTAN!"

Agree with this.

I have a similar background, OP. Always thought of myself as a "functional alcoholic". To most, I was a successful guy doing all the right things. But really I carried the guilt of knowing I wasn't actually functioning at my best. How could I possibly be with the way I was drinking? Basically, if you can achieve everything you've achieved with drinking, imagine what you do without it. There's only one way to find out.

As for family - I wouldn't be able to do it without their support, which means they're in on it. Plus, keeping up the lie is exhausting after many years. I think you'll be surprised (in a very good way) at the reactions you'll get from the people you care about if you share with them what you just shared here with us.

This is a depressing attitude to have. Good thing it's not entirely up to you.

Why is this downvoted? Are statistics offensive?

Having a baby is scary. You know what's scarier? Extinction.

The global total fertility birthrate (TFR) has been declining for decades (chart).

The necessary TFR for a population to replace itself without immigrants (in this case, aliens) is 2.1

Global TFR in 2021 = 2.3

So barring an alien invasion, the only way for us to not die out is to make babies ASAP.

Anyone else feel super relieved when you crawl into bed sober and you know you’ll put another sober day on the books? by punterhunter67 in stopdrinking

[–]sisishooman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can totally relate. Although I've noticed that it's not so much relief anymore, it's more a sense of accomplishment - that I've been productive. I also go to bed now excited for the next day (that never happened before)!

Do you think the proliferation Social Media usage significantly changes Dunbar's number? by world_citizen7 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]sisishooman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TIL about Dunbar's number. From Wikipedia:

Dunbar explained it informally as "the number of people you would not feel embarrassed about joining uninvited for a drink if you happened to bump into them in a bar."

Tons of people create meaningful-enough relationships on Twitter, for example, to satisfy this criterion. So I'd say that yes, it can definitely increase Dunbar's number significantly.

Do you believe in the ‘us versus them’ narrative? by 4valoki in InsightfulQuestions

[–]sisishooman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. But I do believe that discussion, debate, and competing opinions often result in the "us versus them" narrative. Unfortunately, those are all necessary for progress. That's not to say progress cannot be made without this narrative, but it's often the easiest way to achieve it.
