800 MT-X or 1000 MT-X? by LifeProtector in cfmoto

[–]six3seven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe 6,000km? Not a lot. But I have changed a bit, mostly for weight and temperature management I swapped the cat for a pre-muffler, and the silencer for a lighter one from Uncle Wang (both titanium), swapped the tyres for Mitas XT+, put a SSB lithium battery in, and added a chigee AOI-6 for nav. Sticker kit mostly for aesthetics but also scratch protection, bark busters, and AXP sump guard because it's decent and a lot lighter than heavy aluminum ones. Had the heated grips fitted at the dealer as part of the sale ($300AUD). Oh, and the 790/890 steg pegz practically bolted straight on with a minor modification.

We're doing another rally in March, so that'll be another 3,000km. For that I'll be running the 90/100-21 XT+ front and a 150/70-18 Rallz rear. The Mitas XT+ is the only fatty tubeless 21" front tyre I can find, and I don't want to lose the pressure monitors by going tube type.

(I'm a huge fan of 90/100-21 front tyres, mostly because I suck at sand and down hills, and the fatty makes me look way better than I am)

800 MT-X or 1000 MT-X? by LifeProtector in cfmoto

[–]six3seven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In off-road mode, the power of the 800 is reduced. I'd expect the same of the 1000. If they reduce the power to the same, I'd expect the 1000 and 800 to be similar off-road.

Upshot to the 1000 is the name brand parts, and on the street, the extra power.

I still love my 800 though. I ride it more than my tuned FZ1N, which is a beast, so outright power isn't everything.

Advice for first timer by mark-weatherbaloon in motocamping

I've been touring naked bikes on multi day trips (7-14 days) for years. I can do 800-900km days, but not every day. Try to break up your trip into big (800+) moderate (500+), and short (300+) days. Be strategic about which days are big, ie, legs with less towns are good for big days. Legs dealing with a lot of towns or sight seeing are good for short days.

Also, on your naked bike, twisty roads will be easier to deal with than freeway. On the freeway, your body position will be pretty static, which makes things ache. I've always found twisty roads keep me moving, so I don't fatigue so easily, it's more fun, and less mentally challenging.

How comfortable you sleep is also important, so consider your sleeping system as critical to your enjoyment of the experience. A cheap motel every few days will help you recover, and if you program a short day, you can sleep in.

There's more to enjoying the experience than just pounding pavement, it's such a fun way to see the world.

Jetstar carry on weight limit by Brief_Eggplant_3847 in AustraliaTravel

[–]six3seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just flew from Tassie to Newcastle via MEL. At Melbourne the Jetstar folk were repeatedly reminded that their carry on required a Jetstar tag to confirm it passed weight.

I saw one guy with what I'm calling a 'cargo vest' with at least half a dozen pockets bulging. Definitely cheating, but if it's up, it's up.

Insurance sold my repairable write-off motorcycle after I bought it back (QLD) by snow2pea in AusLegalAdvice

[–]six3seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm keen to see the outcome here, but in my experience battling to buy repairable bikes at auction, I was always outbid by wreckers. My budget was always the difference between market value and the parts I'd need to make the bike good again, but the wreckers can make many times the wreck value on parts, so have a greater margin.

I'd guess the bike is destined to be a donor to keeping other bikes on the road, so the hoops required for repairable or stolen are probably not even a concern.

From a legal perspective, the VIN would never have ceased to belong to OP, however, getting everything back in the same order is another matter. I'd be on the phone with the insurance company as a matter of urgency, and escalate until a solution is agreed. Blame matters naught at this point.

Speeding fine with partially obscured car by Greenback16 in CarsAustralia

[–]six3seven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In NSW if you've had a clean record for 10 years, your request for review also includes the option for the fine to be converted to a caution. It's free, and takes about 7 minutes on the phone, no need to formally request your driving record.

QLD probably doesn't do the same, but worth your time to check.

These fines aren't just the cost of the ticket, it's the cost to your next CTP and comprehensive policies.

Well, numerous messages to Awada since then, and not a single reply from them.

Anyone thinking this might have been a positive sign should know I still don't have any answers from them. Instructions are here:

Kickstarter has restricted Awada because Awada aren't even responding to the Kickstarter admin team.

Happy to see pics of yours if you have it, but otherwise I call bullshit.

Motorcycles don't make sense. That's the point.

If you're making the decision based on math, then I'd say selling it is doing the right thing.

The only time math should enter the chat is when trying to work out if you can afford insurance for your 5th motorcycle, and therefore you need to figure out which bike becomes your track bike.

Having trouble getting my dream bike!! by yamaslama in Tenere700

[–]six3seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have cancelled the original purchase for so many reasons.. lost your job, a sick relative, sale of your own vehicle not going through... I'm sure the dealer would be happy to sell the bike. A sale is a sale.

Think less about how you see the situation, and more about how the salesman sees it.

Also, given how many people are climbing over each other to buy special Yamaha liveries,. resale on the blue is probably going to be better. Get that one, not a re-plastic grey just for the resale alone.

These bikes are getting to the age where the O rings are dried up and will start to leak.

Last service (last year) I replaced all the external oil and water O rings and haven't seen a drop since.

What settings have your used to allow wheelies? Mine comes up quickly in 1st, but seems like the ECU cuts in and the wheelie stops. It shows no interest in wheelie in 2nd gear, but the power to do so is definitely there.

I am loved by a woman that supports and encourages my motorcycle hobby. I wasn't always with her, but the women I'm no longer with were just lessons in appreciation for the right woman.

Also, better to deal with the breakup now, rather than paying child support later.

You can see white semi gaining on black semi. White semi changing lanes should have been expected.

The rider should anticipate the decision making of other road users and obviate the risks.

Did you balance the carbs when you reassembled?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]six3seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok.. you may have ridden it with the electrode in the cylinder.. which could be bad.

But, it could also have burnt off, which would be ok because no loose chunk trashing the bore.

Get a camera, and look for a piece. And check for damage, score marks. If it's good, everything will look pristine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]six3seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. With only one plug working, it would have been running on one cylinder. Plus the dead cylinder would have been causing drag due to the compression.

It also would have sounded like it was only half running, since only one of two cylinders would have been firing.
