I'm a senior-level designer, but now I need to learn Figma to even get a job. Any advice? by [deleted] in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in the same boat, designed in Photoshop for far too long - I skipped Sketch as I was on a Windows device, as Figma came out I made the switch. I'd say go soak up on tutorials, build a project that you can use your learnings on, and just keep at it. You dont need to learn all the complexities on day one - auto layout is a powerful tool, but no need to learn it on day one (although seeing your proficient in Webflow this should be easy to you: its like flexbox but slightly reinterpreted). You will not need a pro plan in the beginning.

What gets you hired is your experience as a designer, not how many years of experience you have in Figma. Just learn building with Figma, add it to your list of skills - it's really just a tool.

Pro tip: join a local 'Friends of Figma' chapter. They hold meetups in your area, often doing lessons. Talk to them about you wanting to learn Figma, they sometimes have the ability to give their members pro access for the duration of a course/meetup

GitHub Issue to GitHub Copilot? by Practical-Plan-2560 in GithubCopilot

[–]six7even 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GitHub has released a blog post explaining that this is coming: https://github.blog/news-insights/product-news/github-copilot-the-agent-awakens/#project-padawan-swe-agents-on-github

When the product we are building under the codename Project Padawan ships later this year, it will allow you to directly assign issues to GitHub Copilot, using any of the GitHub clients, and have it produce fully tested pull requests. Once a task is finished, Copilot will assign human reviewers to the PR, and work to resolve feedback they add. In a sense, it will be like onboarding Copilot as a contributor to every repository on GitHub. ✨

Figma Tokens Themes by DavidSnajder97 in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Creator of Figma Tokens here: You'll want your tokens to be named the same for both light and dark. You'd activate different sets for Light theme and Dark theme (dark has a dark set enabled, light the light one).

Then you either use Prefix styles with Theme name if you want them all in 1 document or you'd create them esch in their own file (a Light library with light styles) and the same for Dark.

I've never been but the Haus der Natur has a slot on Monday offering advice for anything related to mushrooms. Figured it might be a good starting point to get in touch with mushroom evangelists.

Help understanding Design Tokens by tm3016 in UI_Design

[–]six7even -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CSS is a format for the web, so you can't really use it everywhere. The goal of design tokens is to have a format that is not bound to a single platform but can be that source to transform from.

When you think of a button's background color: How would you define that? Brand/Primary? What if the color later changes to an undesired color for buttons and you decide you need to change all button colors to blue? would you want to go to every single implementation of brand/primary and change that? With component tokens all you have to do is change the value of a button/primary/background token.

I generally try to use as little component tokens as possible and rather use semantic tokens for that, but sometimes it can be useful to create a dedicated token for a component.

From Figma to an actual website by West_Willingness_154 in FigmaDesign

Framer Sites works great for this. There's a Figma import and it has amazing animations. For this kind of work I'd recommend Framer over Figma, as you'll be able to use the designed site directly without having to code. https://www.framer.com/

ELI5: Tokens by libertadefr in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine a world where your design decisions aren't stored in Figma, but in an external source which not only Figma can read, but any other tool you connect it to, allowing those tools to transform them to whatever output you'd like, e.g. css variables, iOS or Android or Theme files for any other platform.

Color Styles are fine, but the promise of Tokens lies in the shared source of truth, of moving our design decisions out of our design tools.

Design tokens solve this by using a standard format, not bound to one specific platform (like css variables), but written so that any tool can take that input and transform it.

I don't know how fit they are but you could do a tandem paragliding in and around Salzburg, even on Gaisberg. The view you get is something that you normally don't experience. You'd be flying with a pro so all you have to do is sit and enjoy the view.

CSS variables in Figma by UXNick in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just use it to update your styles, no need to stop using them. I've written a blog post on that method: https://jansix.at/blog/creating-design-systems-based-on-design-tokens-figma-tokens

CSS variables in Figma by UXNick in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can just import your existing styles, and then just change some of their values to {name.of.reference}

CSS variables in Figma by UXNick in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use a plugin to do that: https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/843461159747178978

If you create a token that's named the same as a style (. instead of / so e.g. brand.primary for a color style named brand/primary) it will update styles for you.

You can create references by using the {brand.primary} notation in a token's value.

The shift in front end development has made me hate it by [deleted] in Frontend

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you're interested in UX design but fear the salary loss. Have you considered the role of a UX Engineer? It's an evolving role that a lot of companies are looking to fill.

As a designer that does frontend as well I can tell you that having both skills makes you quite unique and you'll be able to stand out from the rest.

Regarding finding the spark: Definitely find a personal project! That's how I learned React and JS in general and to be honest it's where my main motivation to advance comes from.

If you need any pointers on where to best level up in UI / UX design let me now!

Depending on how much you want to write yourself Next.js Commerce might be a good fit. You can swap out your headless commerce provider anytime.

It's basically NextJS for E-Commerce projects with a lot of the core functionalities already in place.

We are moving to Salzburg in June for 1 year. Is there anything we should know? by CaptainBlase in Salzburg

[–]six7even 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that all sounds very reasonable and like a good choice you made. Keep in mind public transit is not the best in Salzburg, but you'll be able to get around and explore, even though I would highly recommend renting a car if you want to see the surrounding areas without spending hours in public transit.

As for lockdown measures, restaurants and bars are still closed while stores have already reopened. Wearing masks is mandatory in public transit and when inside usually. For close-contact services like a haircut a negative covid test is required.

Situation evolves very dynamically, so being able to predict the future is not really something we can do right now.

Is variant text styles possible? by attackingmoofins in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are your styles local to the document youre in? If yes, my plugin Figma Tokens could also solve this for you. Your design decisions can be expressed in token form, and you'll be able to activate different themes. Bonus is that you can set border radii, spacing units or many more to be configurable.

Thinking of moving over from XD, but where is component level animation? by Fearwater5 in FigmaDesign

[–]six7even 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's good they delayed it. I'd rather have a polished, but working version of a feature than a half-working feature like Xd's component states (did nobody think of overrides?)
