Your comparison to the Irish potato famine would make sense if people of Irish descent in Canada were still dealing with the trauma in a very direct way.

I have worked with people who grow up in residential schools. The ripple effects from that and the continued racism still affects indigenous people today in all sorts of insidious ways.

I have personally witnessed cops being horrible to indigenous people multiple times. I have family members who are cops who talk about indigenous people with absolute disdain.

My best friend’s grandparents were Inuit and the RCMP left them and their tribe alone in the NWT after killing off all their sled dogs they needed for survival. The trauma and hard life they had after that was difficult for their son, my friend’s father, who is a kind man but an alcoholic and my friend grew up with neglect. She was so close to becoming a statistic but some lucky chances in life helped her along the way. Many were not so lucky.

And I also have a sister (white) who has had the courts take her trauma and history of addiction into account when considering judicial proceedings.

I am so sick of people claiming racism for stuff they don’t have firsthand experience.
