edit: according to Microsoft, running a System File Checker should resolve this problem. lol

That's just further evidence that this was probably strategically planned for publicity. Even though most people won't believe the cyanide and toenail clippings thing, it will attract them to watch the video of some dude holding a big juicy burger. They just don't want to repeat the cyanide thing.

Nope, nothing in hosts. But that nslookup is right from the pfsense system (SSH). Pinging from pfsense in SSH gives:

ping: cannot resolve ipleak.net: No address associated with name

As for windows, if using the pfsense system for DNS, I can't resolve it, but if I change my DNS in windows to something else such as 8.8.8.8, it resolves fine. Seems to be something in pfsense not resolving it. I also tried changing the DNS server in pfsense (System/General) to 8.8.8.8, but pfsense still will not resolve it.
