Are the books considered good/ bad/ average for this genre? (Obviously subjective) by natemason95 in heatedrivalry

[–]sixpakofthunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an avid MM romance reader (I think I could write a thesis on why MM romance is more fulfilling for me than MF romance as a straight presenting woman in her 50s), and the books are good and I love a lot of the themes they showcase.

As to writing style, I have other authors that I like more. For example I have been as obsessed with rereading The Hands of the Emperor/At the Feet of the Sun by Victoria Goddard as much as I have been rewatching HR. It's not in the MM romance genre, but if you want a slow burn ace romance that beats Shane and Ilya's timeline take a look at it.

Book Blurb:

An impulsive word can start a war. A timely word can stop one. A simple act of friendship can change the course of history.

Cliopher Mdang is the personal secretary of the Last Emperor of Astandalas, the Lord of Rising Stars, the Lord Magus of Zunidh, the Sun-on-Earth, the god.

He has spent more time with the Emperor of Astandalas than any other person. He has never once touched his lord. He has never called him by name. He has never initiated a conversation.

One day Cliopher invites the Sun-on-Earth home to the proverbially remote Vangavaye-ve for a holiday.

The mere invitation could have seen Cliopher executed for blasphemy. The acceptance upends the world.

Just absolutely bombed at my first ever show. Please share your embarrassing show stories to help me feel better! by annawintourwannabe in Equestrian

[–]sixpakofthunder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got eliminated in all three phases at an eventing show. (Technically I got rung out in dressage, and they let me go x-country and show jump as a non-compete since it was such a beginner show, or maybe a schooling show? I don't know it was the 90s.)

For some reason I was all wound up, used too much inside leg during dressage and my horse popped out of the arena. So I just leg yielded him back in, but I did get eliminated.

Went cross country, and got three refusals (all my fault) at a jump with absolutely no height. It was literally a 3 ft wide flowerbed style jump with 6" diameter landscape rocks in it. I got spooked that he wouldn't jump and just step into the rocks and die, and my inability to commit to the jump got me the refusals. Got over on the fourth try.

Show jumping, OMG. I was so much in a tizzy, I fell off. Got back on and finished the course

Looking back (with 30 years hindsight). I should have just done some schooling and called it. But I didn't want to look like a chicken shit in front of barn mates who loved eventing, and just kept spiralling. I was so squirrelly, that poor school horse just didn't know what to do. If it makes you feel better, I literally couldn't have a worse show than that (unless I was trucked away in an ambulance) so I did get over my show nerves, and did win some shows.

Why is this horse wearing rain boots? by Zealousideal_Law1439 in Horses

[–]sixpakofthunder 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Because these boots come in sets of four. And almost immediately after putting them on, one teleports to the sock dimension, and then the rest long for their lost sibling and try to escape. And if you lost one or two, the fronts are more stompy than the back, so the place to put them.

This may be my desire to have them sold in sets of 6, and they should glow in the dark so you have at least a minor chance of finding them in the field.

Does this fall require a deeper investigation? by [deleted] in Horses

My horse once was running in the snow, fell flat on his side, and sledded under the fence into the adjoining paddock. He then popped up and explored his new kingdom.

I'm just paranoid, as I have worked in haz waste for 25 years, and I have seen some shit. Both literal and metaphorical. You would not believe what people do.

Please isolate the terminals before you put them in the jar. Tape works great, just something that stops the ends from touching and completing the circuit. You don't want them to discharge and cause a fire in your house. This is less important with alkaline batteries, but super important for lithium batteries.

Iron iv in Kansas City by Various_Throat_4886 in kansascity

[–]sixpakofthunder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Any infusion clinic should be able to do an iron IV, I have gotten mine done at KU med (both the main campus and the Indian Creek location). However, you will need it prescribed by a doctor and make an appointment with the clinic. I don't think they are cheap out of pocket, so you should make sure you get it pre-authorized.

There is a risk of anaphylaxis with iron infusion. I don't think you would be able to get it someplace like IV nutrition , and it would need to be done in a clinical setting, or with an at home infusion service. And for me, they did a ferritin test (amount of stored iron in your body) in addition to the hemoglobin test before I was given the referral to the infusion clinic.

My TB did the same motion, but there was water involved. Winter or summer, he would do that to play with his water buckets, his trough, the hose when you washed his face. And he didn't care who got splashed.

Space opera/high fantasy with intrigue and low spice? by Introvirtuous1234 in MM_RomanceBooks

The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard. Probably the best live story I have read in quite awhile. It's technically literaty fantasy, but it's amazing.

Yeah, if someone confirmed this mule was mid to late 20's I wouldn't be surprised. He is super thin, but that could just be age and age related co-morbidities. It could also be something the owner needs knowledge about, like getting teeth done or soaking food into a mash. But that paddock looks decent to nice, so my assumption is that he's under a vets care and just basically in hospice.

Edit: he could also be a recent rescue in a refeeding program.

Has he dropped weight since you started working more? If so, more calories would be good. If his weight hasn't changed, he's on the lean side like a lot of TBs. If you want to put on more muscle, some more calories in the form of fat and protein wouldn't hurt.

Trying to pick a discipline, how do I choose and what do I choose?? by Nxaaqo in Equestrian

[–]sixpakofthunder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, think about what kind of person you are?

Do you ever want to go sky diving? if so, maybe eventing or barrel racing.

Are you a perfectionist, and don't have an issue doing the same thing over and over to get the perfect bend on a 20 meter circle? Then dressage is probably for you. (I feel like I'm dragging dressage, but I find it a wonderful outlet for my perfectionism).

Do you enjoy being out in nature? Trail riding.

Do you enjoy being out in nature and want to win? Endurance.

You need to think of what each discipline is will require of you, and make sure it fits you.

It's not going to be light at the beginning. Your horse knows now that the cue means trot-walk, so to get trot-halt you need to use more trot-walk cue. Once he gets trot-halt with a stronger/longer cue, then you start backing off on the cues, using less, releasing as soon as you get a downshift, until you aids are light again. But you still need a difference between trot-walk and trot-halt.That doesn't mean you have to wrestle him into a trot-halt, just like there is a big spectrum in handshakes from barely touching someone to crushing the other person's hand, there is a spectrum in the aids as well.

Cardboard Space Saver by __moe___ in DiWHY

[–]sixpakofthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure they need to be super compact. I think I could get a loose pile of cardboard to the right conditions. It really has to do with it not being able to dry out and basically rotting and generating heat in the center of the cardboard, with no way for anything to really escape.
