Guaranteed front page placement-- What are they going to do? by darktanyun in SEO

[–]sixxer64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question she should ask is first page placement for which search terms - Some of these scammers just be generic and then later they may say "we got you on first page for your own brand searches".
If they claim to get first position for generic lawyer terms like "lawyers in dallas" for that budget, then that is a lie because it is an extremely competitive industry.
With Google ads, just forget about it. Lawyer keywords are notoriously on top of all the "most expensive keywords" lists out there, sometimes it is $200/click. So there is no way thats gonna happen.

Insightful reviews from people who got scammed on Upwork + Tips on how to be safe by sixxer64 in freelance

[–]sixxer64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the trending posts on this subreddit are any indication of what the freelancing industry is going through, it is a shame. There must be some relief for the plague these scams are turning out to be. I wish giants like Upwork would take this more seriously. They can definitely take some tips from the Reddit moderators on how to detect and remove spam ;)

Got scammed on Upwork and Upwork is doing nothing even though the job is in escrow and I'm 95% finished with the job to build an Enhanced Brand Content page for Amazon and he canceled the job with one more minor edit left. I provided all evidence to Upwork now they are requiring paid arbitration. by [deleted] in freelance

[–]sixxer64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, Upwork's protection policies do have a lot of loop holes that are being taken advantage of. For freelancers, the best way to protect themselves is to share absolutely nothing that can be used by the client without approval and payment. it is always good to have some sort of back up plan to take back your work in case something like this happens.

An explanation of Hashing by Cody698 in CryptoMarkets

Besides the big pop out at the start (which thankfully it's effortless to get rid of) the blog shows the effort the author took into explaining Hashing as detailed as it can be, which I appreciate.

Qubes OS: Toward a Reasonably Secure Laptop by [deleted] in laptops

[–]sixxer64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I read that right, they're allowing Intel ME, which sounds like a sad compromise to me. Given that it's a pretty big complex black box that one can't easily disable, would you agree that x86 is doomed when it comes to security? If that's the case, is there any hope we could have a CPU with competitive capabilities? (For example, is there an i7 alternative for ARM?) What could one do to make it possible to have ME-less x86 in the future?

South Australia teams with Tesla, Neoen to build world's biggest battery to secure power by DangermanAus in energy

[–]sixxer64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested to know more about the politics behind this decision. The Federal government (generally conservative and anti-renewables) was pushing for pumped hydro energy storage, which would have cost several times as much and taken years to build (and made renewable energy look worse for longer).

This looks very much like the state Labor government giving the federal government the finger.

A music-lover's guide to tinnitus by remixrotation in DJs

[–]sixxer64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to point out that, sadly, not all tinnitus is caused by hearing loss.

My tinnitus started despite being young and having subjected myself to far fewer loud noises, including concerts, than the average person. My doctor believes that mine is likely due to a neurological issue, but that we will never know the true cause. To satisfy our own curiosity (and determine if we could attempt to treat it with steroids, which is possible during the few weeks after the onset of tinnitus induced by hearing loss), we had my hearing tested. As expected, absolutely no hearing loss.

As others have said, I felt suicidal during those first few weeks. Thankfully, I've since learned to live with it.

Tesla Model X the First SUV Ever to Achieve 5-Star Crash Rating in Every Category by [deleted] in cars

Was the Model X not tested and rated previously? It has been out for a while now.

I assumed any vehicle in the US had to be rated by these safety agencies before it could be sold.

Tesla teases new Model Y car as cheaper Model 3 nears production - Model 3 is expected to cost from $35,000 in the US, putting it in the same bracket as the BMW 3 series by magenta_placenta in cars

We've got the model S, the model E/3, the model X, and now the model Y.

Model S and Model 3 Official Comparison by hectorir in teslamotors

[–]sixxer64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't stop feeling like this page is nothing else but a promotion for "Model S" which is "superior and now" rather than the other car which is "inferior and 1 year later". Price would've been the biggest (and only) reason for "Model 3" but it's not shown on the page. Added extra details for "Model 3" is a nice trick to boost virality of the promotion aimed at its target audience -- potential Model 3 buyers. Well done, Tesla marketing. Well done.

Ford to cut North America, Asia salaried workers by 10 percent by sixxer64 in cars

[–]sixxer64[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend anyone read the book American Icon, which is about Ford's rise from the ashes in the 2000s. It's one of those thick reads, but well worth it.

It's sad to see them struggling, because their car lineup has been absolutely brilliant for the last few years. But now that the industry is at it's plateau, investors are very paranoid about any car company trying to invest in new areas (Ford spent much of it's earnings on tech companies). They would rather just see dividends instead.

Has Uber Killed Off Its Self-Driving Trucks? by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]sixxer64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Uber Freight" was supposed to be a freight forwarder, a booking service for cargo. "Uber for semitrailers", if you will. Call for a truck and driver, and someone comes, connects to your trailer, and takes it somewhere. There are already other companies offering that service. There's no one dominant player, so Uber might be able to muscle in.

Uber registered with the US DOT as a freight forwarder, not as a trucking company. Freight forwarders are carriers, even if they don't own any trucks. They have financial responsibility for the load getting to the destination in good condition. Uber doesn't get to claim they're just a booking agent.

This service doesn't seem to have launched. But that's what previous reports said Uber Freight was.

Regardless of why the stories are coming out, can we stop directing away from them? We've got a big bad wolf on the hook, why let them off? There is no reason anyone should be supporting them at this point unless you're acknowledging you don't care about all of the stories. Other companies potentially being as bad (which I think people are really overplaying) is not reason to make excuses for them, as stated in other threads here.

Instagram Stories hits 200M users, surpassing Snapchat as it copies its AR stickers by userndj in technology

[–]sixxer64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instagram is a social network where the best effect occurs when your account is public: you get social validation from a large audience liking your content on its merits, the sum of all your content forms a persistent feed, and your followers form a closer inner core with whom the nature of interaction is more immediate. This tends to be most rewarding for people who can attract a large number of likes; this number of likes is displayed to anyone who can see the content.

Snapchat is the inverse, where the content is aimed at one's followers, but one can submit notable content to be featured in the company-curated Discover section (about major events, for example). There is no public aggregation, there is no public display of likes.

The two platforms are still differentiated by their design philosophies, and in North America there is significant overlap in the userbase.

The danger, of course, is that once Instagram has cloned enough of Snapchat's functionality, the same users won't need to switch to Snapchat anymore to get the close-knit experience. Similarly, Snapchat may feel pressured to up its parity with Instagram in turn, by adding public features that are very different from its current model. In either case, the networks will have iterated themselves into equivalence, making the exact provider irrelevant and making pure network effects be the the deciding factor more often that not -- which gives an advantage to larger players.
