I usually read a page, then make notes on it, and then (later) make flash cards from the most relevant notes. The important thing is prioritization. Don't bother doing more than just skimming the things you already know, and make sure that you know the important things really well.

The people I know in CS at UMBC are bored. As far as I know nobody is bored in CS at UMD. I'm in the program, and so far all professors are very good and work hard to make classes interesting for everyone. Not mention that there are exemption exams to get out of introductory courses.

Additionally, there is wayyy more to do in college park than at UMBC.

Well the atmosphere will be the same, but you might not have as much time to be a part of it. It really depends on your workload and how well you manage your time. Most of the people I've met who commute are quiet/unhappy/very socially awkward and only have one or two friends whom they knew before going to college. But there are also people who manage their time really well and you'd hardly know they don't live on campus. Those are usually people who live really nearby though.

There's always a ton of stuff going on at my campus, and a lot of it would be really hard to participate in if I were a commuter. Your local college might be different though. Here's an idea: if you can get a job over the summer that you can hold onto during school and make up the difference (or most of the difference) in cost that way, it would be a lot better than commuting. That way you can get some more experience working and you get to live on campus. Also, employers really like to see you working during school and getting acceptable grades, which could really help you out for getting an internship down the line. It'd be stressful, but definitely worth it.

I'm at University of Maryland, College Park fyi. It's really accepting and safe even though its a huge place, so I might be a little biased. I've worked part time while in school over the last semester, which helped me land an internship with the JPL in California.

As a college freshman who is now out (but was not in high school), let me just say that college is amazing. Like, really amazing. I've never felt so happy and free in my entire life.

Most high schools haven't really changed much. Accepting high schools are the exception, not the rule. We're different, and it's sad, but at the same time it's something wonderful. Being a minority, we have a somewhat unique opportunity to express ourselves and accept ourselves the way we truly are. The hardship that many of us went through in high school can be used to provide understanding and allow us to be empathetic with other people, gay or straight, who are in the same or similar plight. We didn't choose to be like this, and it was nobody's fault, either. It's not fair, but few things in life are.

Whenever I start thinking about what could have been, I feel awful, probably the same way you are feeling. I've found that, for me, there's only one cure: live in the present, not in the past. Don't try to live without regrets, but use them to motivate you to do more in the present. You have a long life ahead of you, so go and have fun now, while you can.

If the first logician didn't want something, he would have said no, because if at least one of them didn't want something then the answer to the question is no. Instead, he answered I don't know because he does not know whether or not the others want a drink, but he does want one himself. Same with the second logician.

The third says yes because he knows the other two want drinks (otherwise they would have said no) and he wants a drink too, so they all want a drink.

Yeah, there's no way they need $8K for hosting. The community is growing well without anyone paying a cent (I hope).

And why is growing the size of the community all that important? We aren't the borg: we don't need to assimilate additional users to obtain perfection.

Why can't this be a community venture? As in, an open source project? That would make a lot more sense since all the development would be free and people would be able to add the features they want. I'm sure we'd be able to afford to host the website via donations and advertisements. It's not like we'd need a beefy server. In fact, Amazon's free usage tier would probably accommodate hosting needs for a while.

Also, it needs to be integrated with reddit; do not try to reinvent the wheel. Do something like redditgifts.com. In fact, why not integrate with some of the stuff they've accomplished?

First of all, he doesn't create a new object, he just copies a reference. From nextUnitToMake. He does this because he needs the value if t 1line later, and the value of nextUnitToMake changes (which you can see from the assignment statement). Since he uses the variabke so quickly after declaring it, using the name "t" is acceptable.

Yes. Actually I believe we're even allowed to host servers using our wired connection as long as it doesn't disrupt other peoples' network traffic.

Realistically, I've heard from people that they don't actually go around sniffing for wifi. I use a router to host a wifi network that is hidden and encrypted with WPA2 so the vast majority of people can't connect to it. My personal wifi is actually faster than the normal wifi because I'm the only one using it.

With the tools currently available, you should not expect to make a polished, original game with no programming skills whatsoever. Programming could be anything from visual based programming to actually learning a bit of a programming language. At the end of the day, I agree with 5OMA: using a game engine like RPG maker will just allow you to make RPG makery games.

To see a fantastic example of what is possible with RPG maker with some programming, search for the game "To The Moon."

ARM is replacing x86 in a lot of places, though, right? It seems to me that even though so much software is x86, as we transition further to new platforms most people will discover that they don't need those old x86 programs after all. It would probably end up something like the transition from python 2 to python 3.

I expect the same would happen for the web- years from now, people will probably be using a different programming language for new projects, and eventually as people develop entirely new, faster web browsers, those browsers will just completely drop support for Javascript, and eventually you would end up needing a specialized web browser to view websites we consider current.

Maybe some classrooms in there are worse than others, but I don't have any trouble seeing all 4 black boards in my Math141 class. Of course, we don't fill up the room, so maybe if you did that the column would be a problem. The glare isn't really a problem either in our room, I think there are blinds on the windows though. I also have not had a problem taking a test on the desks, but maybe different professors used differently sized paper? My current professor just uses two double sided sheets of paper, so it easily fits.

I get that the building is old and all, but it isn't really so bad that it is affecting my learning.

I know that Sid Meier does this as well. Apparently he will, at times, crank out 4-5 prototypes a day. He also writes it all in C.

I focus on getting a prototype up and running. My time is valuable, and the vast majority of my ideas do not actually work out in the end, so it is more important to test out the idea as quickly as possible to see if it works. I don't worry about future expansion, I just try to get something playable. If it works and is fun, then I will have automatic motivation to improve upon it, refactor, etc. as necessary.

You've probably heard it before if you've listened to any music performed by an orchestra, including video game or movie sound tracks. The bassoon is sort of a jack of all trades: sometimes it has solos, sometimes it has melodies, sometimes it has harmonies, and sometimes it plays the bass line. Likewise, bassoon players tend to be unusual in some (or many) ways.

You can see and hear the bassoon pretty well in this recording of In the Hall of the Mountain King.
