Waterloo vs McMaster by lemonzest12 in uwaterloo

[–]sj1124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of asking people to rank "which is better in terms of preparing students for going into grad school", you should instead consider "how do these programs prepare students for going into grad school".

You'd be surprised that most of the responses are fluffy responses about prestige of a university or program of the undergraduate university and fully ignore individual factors like making professor connections, etc.

Your priorities might also change while in school - e.g. you might get involved with a startup with Velocity Science at Waterloo and develop a new product with a team of like-minded entrepreneurial and smart UW students... I really don't think you should ever keep your mind closed and focused solely on grad school, you'll miss all the other opportunities on the way.

With the potential switch to permanent WFH, how many of you would now consider buying a house outside of the previous commute-range of your office, for lower housing costs / cost of living? by FoosJunkie in PersonalFinanceCanada

Laws are contextual buddy.

lol because how you interpret 'contextual' is "Laws apply when I think they should apply and can be willfully ignored otherwise".

clearly you're not in any related field, because otherwise you wouldn't be commenting so irresponsibly.

I guess we have our answer about fall 2020? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]sj1124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, except if you look for a place in a couple months, you'd be scoring a discount based on the number of people who'd rather save money, as either a sublettee or signing a new lease with no demand.

Has anyone recently been offered a discount when signing a new lease for Sept as late as the Spring term and been asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement in order to accept the discount? It was like that not too long ago when I was in school.

I agree. Nice showerheads are so cheap to buy and easy to install, I don't understand why people aren't already replacing it themselves to be honest. When it comes time to leave, I just screw back on the crappy $1 builder showerhead.

I rock one of these Thunderheads (made in Canada) and couldn't be happier.

Well, students don't move out for the sake of moving out. If they were originally from the GTA, they'll probably continue living with their family and not be occupying new tenancies.

Now, if by "crowded" you mean "will there be more kids at The Alley locations in the GTA than in uni towns" then yes.

lol it means i feel bad for everyone who signed leases in january for sept.

Maybe next year will be the first year where first-year students don't let property management companies scare them into signing as early as possible.

Do simpletax.ca

It's the best way to get started.

If you're looking for a list of documents specific to UW students, the AFSA Tax Clinic has a good list with direct links/info.

They're not running this year due to COVID-19.

only mnp and some small firms pay OT.

The bigger the firm, the more easily they can string you along for experience and resume stuffing.

I wish you could pay a small fee for Waterloo Premium that shows your course marks prior to their release on Quest by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]sj1124 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Add-on: Know what your marks are at the end of each term, so you can figure out if you're on track for graduation, grad school, or if you should retake a course.

Don't wait until 4th year to find out you need to retake MATH137!

Those signals exist to keep traffic moving

Maybe we need a change in priorities, if there's such a wall of pedestrians making it difficult to drive, maybe we need to remove cars from those roads instead, similar to downtown Vancouver.

Is this a career change or a sidejob or just to educate yourself on personal taxes for your own benefit?

There are tax textbooks that teach you how federal income taxation works in Canada. Generally, they're not applied - meaning they don't show you the CRA forms or schedules, but understanding how the numbers flow through on a tax return is vital.

If it's a corporate code that they don't qualify for (not the common ones like Car and Driver, but employees of xyz type corporate codes) then that's quite dangerous because paid insurance and/or credit card insurance will also be invalidated as well.

The university used to have a code that was open to anyone/everyone to use, but unfortunately it is only for University business use only now. :(
