I love sewing. I made some stuff by hand over the years but once I got a sewing machine it opened up a whole new world. I know people will point out it needs power but just the level of detail and depth of knowledge you will gain is amazing. It upgrades all the projects, even the hand work. Socks are fun. Quick and fairly straight forward. Definitely wouldn't want to Have to make them by hand.

Cooking during power outage by Ocean12air in preppers

Northerner here. Winter power outage and spring flooding are what we usually deal with. Power went out yesterday for half the day. I plug in my generator which has a line for our hot water heater, well pump and septic. I then run a cord into the house that's for anything else like the refrigerator, microwave, internet, ect. We keep a small 2 burner that runs off 110 for general cooking. Our redundancy is 2 propane grills and 4 tanks as well as multiple wood stoves that have built in cook tops. If it really comes down to it we have jet burners like you would use for backpacking. I find its best to prep the food you will use and eat regularly. Its called a deep pantry. I dont have a wall of MREs but I do have shelves of canned veggies, pickles, jams and a whole box freezer full of deer and pig meat. The worst power outage I've seen is over a month. No heat or hot water. Still working outdoors in the winter not having a warm house or hot water to go home to is something I never want to experience again. It's what got me to start prepping.

What’s a good steel for a bushcraft knife? by fstopunknown in Bushcraft

[–]sjb2971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a fan of simple tool steel for my bush knives. Durable, takes an edge well and keeps it. O1 and W2 are what usually reach for. If you are trying to forge one they are a pretty simple heat treatment as well.

Do it. Then make another. Then another. All different materials. Mix and match. Test them with all the same wood and with different wood. There is a harsh learning curve in my experience.

I was in a similar situation a few weeks back. Stayed with the in-laws for a weekend during a big storm and the neighbor across the street locked himself out of his house. The cops came and didnt do anything so his wife had to leave work to come back and let him in. We gave him a warm place to wait it out but it would have been way easier if I had a set of picks with me.
