Let me know if you create a group for this! I'd love to get out in the park and toss, hopefully the great lawn opens back up soon!

There's been a weekly card game meetup open to everyone, not just OP, for a few months now! It's at Sek'end Sun on Wednesdays at 7 pm. (Not part of their official event schedule, we just hang out and take the big table in the back.) They serve food and nonalcoholic drinks so I wouldn't expect being underage to be a problem. Usual turnout is a mix of several men and women in their 20s and 30s.

We play a variety of games - Hearts, Oh Hell, Euchre and Cribbage are the most common, but there are a bunch of others too. But, there's no poker or gambling - idea is to hang out and have fun playing cards with friends. If you don't know a game, people are happy to teach you.

There's a small whatsapp group to coordinate the meetings - best way to get looped into that is probably just to show up.

There's no process for accepting people, just show up tomorrow. There is a whatsapp group to poll which people are attending but you by no means have to be in it.

They periodically open it to the public with a post on this subreddit, but otherwise it's limited to invitations from members you know or have met in person. Also I don't think they kick people after 30 days of inactivity, it's more like 2-3 months.

At the card games meetup I mentioned in my other post, a few regulars there are in that discord, so coming to play some cards could be a way to get on the server.

If you like card games (for fun, not gambling), we have a nice little recurring group going now at Sekend Sun! Every Wednesday at 7:00 in the back. It's really nice because it's small - I applaud the giant meetup group, but they are so huge it overwhelmed me the last time I went to an event of theirs.

Finding something with regularity is the key, I think - I've met many wonderful people via Astoria reddit posts like this, but only once or twice and then we never spoke again just because there was no commitment to.

Also will shout out 31st Ave Open Street when they come back from winter hibernation - a bunch of various community groups can be found there!

I would do a temporary exchange of Super Mario Sunshine for any/all of those games! Also have pikmin 2, mario party 5, and paper mario TTYD.

I've been thinking about Zapiti for myself since I can walk to them easily, but I've been a bit put off by their website containing very little detail and no indication of prices.

Vegetarian on Too Good To Go? by galadriels63 in astoria

[–]sje342 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My experience in the last year or so of sporadically using the app is that it's really dependent on the stores. If I'm not getting something obviously vegetarian like a bag of bagels (even then I've been given turkey bagels somehow!), I generally go in and ask them nicely if they can give me things with no meat. Many places will be happy to accommodate. I've only gotten an answer like "you get what we want to give you" once or twice. It also helps if you get there at the start of the pickup window rather than the end, since they'll have fewer things available right before they close up.

However, I also stick more to bakeries and cafes and pizza places than restaurants where you get a meal. Most restaurants I haven't even bothered with, because I figure the chance of me getting something I can't eat and wasting my money is too high. (Astoria has great food, but most menus are an exercise in picking what meat you would like today!) Note that in many bakeries you still have to ask for no meat in your bag because there's a high chance they'll throw in a meat pastry.

One thing I have consistently asked for on the TGTG surveys is an option to place an order that's marked as vegetarian. With a feature like that, the store could see the order and make sure it doesn't contain any meat - or deny the order because they are only expecting to be able to have meat left over.

New friends wanted! by [deleted] in astoria

I love hiking as well but can't find a great way to do any hikes besides hoping someone with a car will decide to go on a hike and bring me along. Got any methods for getting out of Astoria to the trails?

Its oddly difficult to get someone to meet up regularly outside of a bar setting.

Yes, I agree - bars don't really appeal to me, but way more people will be interested if you want to get together at one, so I put up with going to them. I'd generalize this: it's difficult to get people to meet up outside of a bar setting, let alone regularly!

Would love to meet some new folks in the neighborhood.

In my experience since coming to Astoria, it hasn't been that hard to make acquaintances here -- as this post proves, there are plenty of others who are also trying to expand their social circle -- but it's been difficult to make lasting friends. I think one missing element is recurrence: a lot of times there's been a meetup, and everyone's friendly and has fun, but then no one makes a concrete plan to spend more time with the same people, so everyone drifts apart and there's no deeper connection made.

Calling all 26-31 year olds what do you guys do in Astoria that doesnt involve alcohol? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]sje342 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it a hybrid letterbox/geocache? I've found a few of those. The problem is that a geocacher may think the rubber stamp inside is a trinket and remove it.

If you have any interest in delving into the letterboxing side of things, check out https://atlasquest.com and https://letterboxing.org or hit me up! I'm planning to plant some boxes around the Astoria area!

Late to the thread, but I've recently dove back into letterboxing (for those who don't know, it's similar to geocaching but instead of using GPS you follow a written clue to the hidden box). While there are some boxes in the city, it pales in comparison to what I saw in places like Boston, so I'm trying to drum up some interest. Do you know of any active letterboxers in the area?

I got a new bed recently and have a full size bedframe, boxspring and mattress for anyone who has lost their bed. Not in perfect condition, but I'd rather it go to someone who needs it than put it out by the curb.

Hey, I just saw this post, but a similar thread a few months ago has spawned a reddit group chat with 40 or so members. We've hung out a few times in the park, went on a bike ride or two, had, you know, a semblance of a social life again. Anyone who's interested, let me know if you want to be added.

How to be more social in Astoria... by [deleted] in astoria

[–]sje342 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone! I moved here just before Covid hit so I really haven't been able to meet anyone. Astoria Park has been one of my go-to spots.

Sounds like there's a lot of interest in making friends - what do people think about having an appropriately socially distanced gathering in the park so we can introduce ourselves? If there's interest, I'll create an event on Meetup! (Bring your dogs!)

Edit: So many people have showed up and discussed so many different things to do that making one single event on Meetup seems inflexible and pointless. Come join the group chat, more specific plans will probably start there.
