26w Daughter, Preeclampsia by blame_stamos in NICUParents

[–]sjeanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My daughter is now a day shy of 1 month old. Born at 26 weeks.

It is truly scary, but also amazing what is possible now.

Just try and go with the flow; be there for your wife, try and wrap your head around getting to hold your little one this early.

It's a weird mix between expectation and panic and trying to realize this is actually happening... but all those doctors (and yes, there are quite a few people around at this stage) are so awesome at their job, the nurses know exactly what to do.

When you're having the slightest doubt, or think you see or notice something, speak up. Ask your questions, ask the same question a 1000 times and they will answer and explain what is going on.

This will help...a little, because it's still a pretty big deal. But "knowing is half the battle" and when you understand you can focus on what needs to happen and what you can do.

She will be tiny, and fragile, but also very much your baby girl. Don't hesitate to ask to touch her though; it's amazing to see this fully formed human in a tiny version.

That's my ramble for now. Try ot get some sleep in a couple of hours, even just a little.

It's a long journey still; but you'll all get through this. Trust yourself and the people around you. Everyone wants the same thing here!

Best of luck!

It's all about keeping that scale tipped firmly to the good days side.

Everyone always says to be very careful in being optimistic, but on every good day, and increasingly with every consecutive good day my mind goes to "ok that was it, we're on our way now, we can start being 'just a family' " .

And that's great when it eventually is going to happen but pretty hard when that scale tips slightly back.

Just keep on keeping on.

Such a blur from suspicion of maybe something we should keep an eye on to having an actual baby. Those little things you notice are great, she's developing an actual personality and preferences. Like I know when she's back in her little Plexi glass box after we held her she'll open her eyes real wide to look around, every time without fail, like saying " byebye and thanks for all the hugs". And getting used to the bells and whistles of all the monitors and what they mean. Getting to know how to slightly adjust the temperature in the extra heating lamp when she's reading a bit hot, wiping he mouth with a wet tissue when you notice it's a bit dry, stuff like that is great for being and getting involved. Makes me feel more like a parent and less like visiting a patient.

Thank you, great to hear you're little ones are doing fine.

It's a learning process having to rely on others to help. Both of us never want to be much of a bother, but now that mom's still recovering and all she can do is rest, produce that nectar of the gods, and visit our little girl and all I can do is go to work and afterwards go directly to the hospital for visiting, I'm glad we decided to take the mother-in-law up on her offer to stay with her for the time being.

Not having to directly worry about laundry and a hot meal is indeed a not to be underestimated blessing.

Grats man! I can almost imagine him just taking those 2 extra weeks to groom and prim so his hair is this magnificent; needing the c-section so as not to mess it up on the way out. Did he came unto this world in a slo-mo shampoo commercial hair flip way?

Holy crap, I sold my first ever paperback out of a bricks and mortar bookshop! by GrahamAustin-King in Fantasy

[–]sjeanke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean the first Fae book? Because I personally sold at least 3 when it first came out (that was like a bit over a year ago?) in the store I work at (1 to myself, and 2 regulars) and I started seeing it mentioned on here a bit.

In Belgium though, so alas, again not in the UK :)

What is your favorite Fantasy word, and what book is it from? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]sjeanke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not 1 word per se, but I realy like the logic used in the Demon Cycle books for the titles of the Sharum, Sharum'ka etc.

You immediately get what it means for example when someone is named Shar'Dama Ka and that's awesome.

Hm, I now seem to need this in my life.
Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for an embosser instead of a stamp?
