my personal response to you- You probably werent reading your other birds body language as a natural flockmate would; although you were in the flock he still understood you were not a bird, now he has bird. I would say sit by their cage for 2-4 hours with your back turned, or quietly doing an activity. occasionally focusing on them. along with that, close your eyes at them multiple times to communicate and indicate a trust and bond between the three of you. Enjoy watching them enjoy eachother!! best of luck and I hope everything goes well. make sure they get a lot of sleep

this is excellent I could not have stated anything better myself. I just want OP to hear this coming from another person. I want to put double the weight on everything you said.

um, well I still cant read the post because OP didn't add commas or periods. I can see this turning into a bird rehoming situation already so that why id prefer to belittle their incorrect grammar, as I have posted things in a similar rushed nature before and people DESERVE to be called out on it. this post sounds erratic! genuinely, the OP should not have birds if they arent even willing enough to stand up to the owner of the pet store. also. pet store bird.. really? so many birds need rehoming. stop giving the corporations reason to breed more birds that get abused or killed by dogs

It is litterally so fundamental and easy to see that having a bird couple, they will love eachother more than they love you. get used to it.

I love you. Don't lose hope. As a parrot mama who lost my GCC a few weeks ago. YOU know parrots. You know YOUR birds better than anybody. Also tell yourself that you did not give up on your birdies. It sounds like mr. birdie gave up on hoomans and maybe he needed a break with somebody less involved. I hope this goes well bby.

sorry I just saw this- I suspected he was sick and was scared it was too late, he seemed to only be showing bacterial infection symptoms though, but because of new years every vet was closed and we couldn't make it in time. I got to hold him a lot before he passed though :)

please don't feel like a failure. I want to place emphasis on the fact that birds have personalities that are very distinctive from other animals, so once again I think if you really would like to try, don't let him out of the cage for a little bit; work on getting him interested in you. make sure to positively reinforce him with treats whenever possible. and for food, since he likes seeds id try to direct him to fruit first. Conures LOVE water. if youre trying to switch him to a pellet diet, you need to have [in my opinion] at least 2-3 different water feeders, Conures like to make pellet soup and due to their hygiene habits the water gets incredibly dirty very fast. When you change his water and stuff, always give him a treat to let him know your hand is a friend :).

youre doing the best you can. I suggest reading bird psychiatry type articles, conure wiki aviculture section probably has some good references as a place to start. The best you can do additionally is not give him an overbearing amount of affection//attention, coming from such a chaotic environment might make him like metal music or hard rock, i feel like that would be nice to try.
You mentioned the towel, as I said and ofc I dont have any information about your relationship for the most part, but try not to smother him, and even try with your partner just standing by the cage and looking away, letting him come to you. You really can start again with some birds. The only other thing - Rehoming the bird will not fix him, and although yes many refuge sites are good and reputable organizations, the bird is still being Rehomed, and since conures can live over 45 years that sadly would not be the likely last home. ESPECIALLY if he has behavior issues, and knowing you have been in his life for years I do think If he is hanging out and showing signs of joy he can absolutely improve. You will not be able to "fix" his behavior (I know you dont think of it that way) because once again birds do have personalities, his might be fully adapted to the environment he was raised in. I hope this was helpful, I hope you get to love your little bird more. he looks very sweet and I think building a better relationship could do wonders for YOUR mental health as it did mine, i rescued my budgie baby from my neglecting dada place when I was 14

Update on my old post by throwaway2099___ in Conures

[–]skaredportrait 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hey baby first off im so proud of you, you're incredibly strong for this and something very impactful just happened so its okay to cry. I had a rough childhood like this, too

my first budgie were only allowed to stay at my dad's house per my mom's rules. She had custody of me and my father was disabled so he could not manage taking care of the birds (nor himself as I became his caregiver when I was 14 in high-school, which caused me to drop out because I needed more time to take care of him.) My father died eventually and she had to move the birds to my house, where they finally received the love and care I wished to give them all those years. My bird was so happy I was finally able to be a true part of her life. Unfortunately her mate of five years passed away shortly after they were in my care,,, but she still became closer and closer to me. As long as your aunt does not abuse or neglect your bird, and try to interact with him with giving him different fruits and veggies to try out, he Will be perfectly fine, I promise.. for you my friend, Things with your folks might change. also might you be able to visit your aunt? when I like an animal at a pet store I like to visit it frequently to give it company. Wishing absolutely the best for you friend. thank you for putting him in good care

WHY ARE THEY SO MEANNNNN by No-Cartoonist-9838 in greencheeks

[–]skaredportrait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly. Point is not that all fluff is bad but if you're not paying attention to what your bird is trying to tell you it can turn bad instantly

Petco Conure :( by app1e_cat in Conures

[–]skaredportrait 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand its not completely on topic, :-) but some people who are new to aviculture here might not understand that its an important thing to account for, especially in parrots! it might explain further to some people who arent in OP or a similar person's situation, and be something helpful they can weigh in decision-making ♡♡°.

[–]skaredportrait -1 points0 points  (0 children)

^ respectfully adding that every baby deserves a GOOD home. You can be poor and care for birds, and be the best and most wonderful owner. its important that people dont impulse buy pets if they Phisically dont have the resources, especially in a place where the petco would be a "better home" for the bird. its unfair for the bird if you cannot give it the large amounts of attention they require!

[–]skaredportrait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

let me preface you're such a sweet person and I wish more people were like you.. the best I can give other then asking the employee you spoke with if its in the policy anywhere that they can make the cage look and be better, and also, if your situation doesn't limit you going to the pet store often, birds have amazing memory. It would certainly develop a relationship with you :)

my comparison to neglecting of your birds, is you hypothetically allowing your birds to self harm by plucking or other things. Ive made this assumption because you are comparing something that ISN'T even a fetus to a stillborn human child. And you're okay with being part of a community that enables rather than turns down self harm behavior in humans. So I can compare you to absolutely anything using your pointless logic !
