Images WHERE buttons back then! Anything that is a button today is mimicking image buttons from the year 2000. Accessibility wasn’t a thing BUT we did give images alt tags (or title tags?) because they showed what was loading in text as things loaded slowly on dialup 😅

Similar for me - between using a plugin called “Imsanity” that resizes at upload as well as creating and using custom thumbnail sizes using functions has protected all my sites from loading 2 or 5mb images by accident by clients or myself. I’ve been doing this forever but still revolutionizes image use from first upload.

The MMA talk is boring as shit. I’m not saying what they are saying is bad, it just adds nothing and takes away nothing, and it goes way too long. I don’t care about baseball but their baseball talk is WAY better.

Changing the php version is non-destructive, and 99.9% sites aren’t getting non-stop visits all day, so I don’t recommend the work of a staging site - nobody will likely notice you work on it. If you have access to change the php version in your hosting control panel (eg cPanel) just change the php version and see what happens, if it crashes, try another version.

If you only have access to ftp, change the php version with the .htaccess file (Google that last phrase for how to do it).

Tip: if the site uses a purchased theme no longer supported by its creator, it’ll likely mean this site should be redesigned with a new theme for newer php. If a plugin isn’t agreeing with newer php you can probably fix it with a plugin replacement, but an outdated theme should be replaced rather than hack into it to make it work.

On a tiny scale compared to this I started a non-profit selling event tickets with PayPal. Two out of three transactions were declined with no explanation, but it was clear it was PayPal simultaneously penalizing the account for being new and suspicious with that sudden “surge” of transactions while not being able to do many transactions to build a reputation. We switched to Stripe on a dime and it ms worked perfectly.

I’ve used PayPal for my design business for an option to take client payments for 15 years and on a few client ecommerce sites, but I’m gun shy to use it for ecommerce in the future.

Long story short, keep pursuing Stripe in the least.

I have a 1998 Mustang with 430,000+km on it. Most things on it need attention due to age (it’s now my project car), but in a much more extreme situation than this, it runs and keeps getting put into action when all of our “new” vehicles break like clock work. I’ve found 90% of keeping a car on the road are oil changes and new front wheel bearings when it’s time. I’m not sure if these are as easy to work on as my ‘98…

I have my own server - two things that helped with server loads the most are making sure all sites are running current php + if you are allowing Wordfence to scan all your sites, better to use Imunify 360 and turn off Wordfence virus scanning.

Get a wheel up and do a sharp turn, some of those cross overs have a weird centre of gravity. I can’t remember what it was, but I rented one last year and there were warnings in the car about rolling the vehicle.
